Book Synopsis Growth Management and Affordable Housing by : Anthony Downs
Download or read book Growth Management and Affordable Housing written by Anthony Downs and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2004-06-15 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Advocates of growth management and smart growth often propose policies that raise housing prices, thereby making housing less affordable to many households trying to buy or rent homes. Such policies include urban growth boundaries, zoning restrictions on multi-family housing, utility district lines, building permit caps, and even construction moratoria. Does this mean there is an inherent conflict between growth management and smart growth on the one hand, and creating more affordable housing on the other? Or can growth management and smart growth promote policies that help increase the supply of affordable housing? These issues are critical to the future of affordable housing because so many local communities are adopting various forms of growth management or smart growth in response to growth-related problems. Those problems include rising traffic congestion, the absorption of open space by new subdivisions, and higher taxes to pay for new infrastructures. This book explores the relationship between growth management and smart growth and affordable housing in depth. It draws from material presented at a symposium on these subjects held at the Brookings Institution in May 2003, sponsored by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, the National Association of Realtors, and the Fannie Mae Foundation. Contributors seek to inform the debate and provide some useful answers to help the nation accommodate the curtailment of growth in urban and suburban domains while still ensuring a supply of affordable housing. Contributors include Karen Destorel Brown (Brookings), Robert Burchell, (Rutgers University), Daniel Carlson (University of Washington), David L. Crawford (Econsult Corporation), Anthony Downs (Brookings), Ingrid Gould Ellen (New York University), William Fischel (Dartmouth College), George C. Galster (Wayne State University), Jill Khadduri (Abt Associates), Gerrit J. Knaap (University of Maryland), Robert Lang (Virginia Polytechnic

Book Synopsis Integrating City Planning and Environmental Improvement by : Gert de Roo
Download or read book Integrating City Planning and Environmental Improvement written by Gert de Roo and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-03-02 with total page 367 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since Integrating City Planning and Environmental Improvement was originally published in 1999, the practice of integrating urban physical planning and environmental quality management has been widely adopted by governments worldwide. Fully revised and updated with a new preface by editors Donald Miller and Gert de Roo and new figures throughout, this second edition reports on the experience of 23 innovative programmes from 11 countries. Mostly written by practicing planners and government officials, the book looks at a wide range of integrated approaches which have been implemented and the critical assessment of these provides lessons for local and national governments interested in setting up similar schemes and suggesting ways of further innovation. While the Rio Earth summit, Habitat II and Kyoto have been a source of global principles for improving the environmental quality of human settlements, this book explores approaches to implement these policy positions and to make these calls for action operational. Consequently, the presentation of these cases deals not only with the technical aspects of measuring and controlling environmental spillovers, but also with the institutional, political and financial aspects of these programmes.

Book Synopsis Urban Sprawl in Western Europe and the United States by : Chang-Hee Christine Bae
Download or read book Urban Sprawl in Western Europe and the United States written by Chang-Hee Christine Bae and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2017-03-02 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Urban sprawl is one of the key planning issues today. This book compares Western Europe and the USA, focusing on anti-sprawl policies. The USA is known for its settlement patterns that emphasize low-density suburban development and extreme automobile dependence, whereas European countries emphasize higher densities, pro-transit policies and more compact urban growth. Yet, on closer inspection, the differences are not as wide as first appears. A key feature of the book is the attention given to France; its experience is little known in the English-speaking world. The book concludes that both continents can offer each other useful insights and perhaps policy guidance.
