Book excerpt: Morristown, New Jersey first earned its place in history during the Revolutionary War when General George Washington camped here with the Continental army, an event that led to the founding of the first National Historic Park in 1933. Morristown preserves history while keeping up with the times, often forging ahead of the pack and into the future. The Green-once a grazing ground for sheep and cattle-became the site of the first Morris County Courthouse and is still a thriving central gathering place for townspeople. Even many of the Morristown's municipal buildings tell of a past steeped in the Gilded Age, as today's citizens walk the halls once trod by millionaires. Morristown: A Military Headquarters of the American Revolution chronicles the many famous people connected to the area such as Benedict Arnold, who was tried here for treason. A landmark event of the communication industry also occurred here when Samuel Morse and Alfred Vail perfected the magnetic telegraph in a barn. This new volume invites readers for a ride through the past, with glimpses into the lives of one of the world's richest and least-known colonies of wealthy people, the hidden drama and sometime romance of a Revolutionary army camp, and the secret network of tunnels dug beneath the city during Prohibition.

Book excerpt: The evolution of the federal prosecutor's role from a pragmatic necessity to a significant political figure. In the United States, federal prosecutors enjoy a degree of power unmatched elsewhere in the world. They are free to investigate and prosecute—or decline to prosecute—criminal cases without significant oversight. And yet, no statute grants them these powers; their role is not mentioned in the Constitution. How did they obtain this power, and are they truly independent from the political process? In Constitutional Inquisitors, Scott Ingram answers these questions by tracing the origins and development of federal criminal law enforcement. In the first book to examine the development of the federal law enforcement apparatus in the earliest part of the early republic, Ingram explains how federal prosecutors' roles began as an afterthought but quickly evolved into powerful political positions. He also addresses two long-held perceptions about early federal criminal prosecution: that prosecutors tried many more cases than historians thought and that the relationship between prosecution and executive power is much more complex and interwoven than commonly assumed. Drawing on materials at the National Archives as well as correspondence and trial reports, Ingram explores the first federal criminal case, the first use of presidential pardon power, the first federal prosecution of a female, and the first interstate criminal investigation. He also discloses internal Administration discussions involving major criminal cases, including those arising from the Whiskey Insurrection, Neutrality Crisis, Alien and Sedition Acts, and Fries' Rebellion. As the United States grapples today with political divisions and arguments over who should be prosecuted for what, Constitutional Inquisitors reveals that these problems began with the creation of the federal prosecutor role and have continued as the role gained power.

Book excerpt: The French were the archenemies of the British and her American colonies, particularly after the French and Indian War which was begun by George Washington. So, why did America look to the French as their principal ally in the American Revolution and why did General George Washington choose a Frenchman as his chief engineer? This biography of Louis Duportail, founder and first Commandant of the Army Corps of Engineers, begins by exploring those questions. It then explores the life of this man, who is virtually unknown in America and less known in his native France. This is an unique biography about an overlooked, even obscure, French officer that was instrumental in the American cause for independence. As a complete biography, it covers his return to France and his service in the French army. Cementing his role in the seminal events of the era, readers will also learn of his problems under the Reign of Terror and his escape to the United States where he purchased a quite farm near Valley Forge. It concludes with his unusual death at sea and the problems of settling his estate. Duportail died in the greatest anonymity, in the greatest indifference, without earthly burial, without military honors, a dedicated monument to his glory in service to France or the United States, and without intervention of his brothers in arms to honor and recall his memory.
