Download or read book Bo's Warriors written by Frank Lieberman and published by Triumph Books. This book was released on 2014-10-01 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A giant tsunami hit the staid Ann Arbor campus of the University of Michigan in 1969 when it was announced that Glenn Edward "Bo" Schembechler was to be the new head football coach, replacing the beloved Bump Elliott. Efforts to pronounce the last name correctly came in response to thousands of questioners asking "Bo who?" but it didn't take long before his name and the Wolverines' resurrected football fortunes were the talk not only of the town, but of the hundreds of thousands of Michigan alumni across the country and around the world. Bo's Warriors is the story of that man and the moribund football program he revived. Bo won a school record 194 games while losing only 48 and never had a losing season. His Michigan teams won or shared the Big Ten title 13 times and made 10 Rose Bowl appearances. In 1968 under Elliott, archrival Ohio State had pounded the Wolverines 50-14, and to add insult to injury, Buckeye coach Woody Hayes went for a two point conversion late in the game rather than kicking the extra point. When asked why he went for two, Hayes is said to have replied, "because I couldn't go for three." The next year, Bo's first as coach, the defending national champion Buckeyes were 17 point favorites, but the 7-2 Wolverines dominated Ohio State and beat them 24-12. In a single afternoon, Schembechler had resurrected Michigan's proud football tradition and returned the program to the country's elite. Bo's Warriors is the story of Bo's first year as coach, seen through the eyes of several players and one assistant coach, and making the excitement of that historic season come alive.
Download or read book Geronimo written by Mike Leach and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2014-05-06 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “In the hands of Mike Leach and Buddy Levy, the story of this brilliant Apache leader comes into sharp focus, both in their narrative of his life and in spirited commentaries on its meaning” (S.C. Gwynne, author of Pulitzer Prize finalist Empire of the Summer Moon). Playing cowboys and Indians as a boy, legendary college football coach Mike Leach always chose to be the Indian—the underdog whose success turned on being a tough, resourceful, ingenious fighter. And the greatest Indian military leader of all was Geronimo, the Apache warrior whose name is so symbolic of courage that World War II paratroopers shouted it as they leaped from airplanes into battle. Told in the style of Robert Greene’s The 48 Laws of Power, Leach’s compelling and inspiring book examines Geronimo’s leadership approach and the timeless strategies, decisions, and personal qualities that made him a success. Raised in an unforgiving landscape, Geronimo and his band faced enemies better armed, better equipped, and more numerous than they were. But somehow they won victories against all odds, beguiling the United States and Mexican governments and earning the respect and awe of those generals committed to hunting him down. While some believed that Geronimo had supernatural powers, much of his genius can be ascribed to old-fashioned values such as relentless training and preparation, leveraging resources, finding ways to turn defeats into victories, and being faster and more nimble than his enemy. The tactics of Geronimo would be studied and copied by the US military for generations. Pain, pride, humility, family—many things shaped Geronimo’s life. In this “compelling book that humanizes a man many misunderstood” (New York Times bestselling author Brian Kilmeade), Mike Leach illustrates how we too can use the forces and circumstances of our own lives to build true leadership today.

What unknown forces determine what a person feels; what a person thinks; and what life a person gets to live? How does a person handle their thoughts and feelings? How does a person handle the adversities and challenges that they face throughout their life? And when a person reaches the "September of their years", what gives them satisfaction when they look back at their life?

Book Synopsis We Own This Game by : Robert Andrew Powell
Download or read book We Own This Game written by Robert Andrew Powell and published by Open Road + Grove/Atlantic. This book was released on 2007-12-01 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Sports Illustrated Best Book of the Year: “Vivid portraits of the kids, parents and coaches of the Greater Miami Pop Warner league” (Linda Robertson, The Miami Herald). Although its participants are still in grade school, Pop Warner football is serious business in Miami, where local teams routinely advance to the national championships. Games draw thousands of fans; recruiters vie for nascent talent; drug dealers and rap stars bankroll teams; and the stakes are so high that games sometimes end in gunshots. In America’s poorest neighborhood, troubled parents dream of NFL stardom for children who long only for a week in Disney World at the Pop Warner Super Bowl. In 2001, journalist Robert Andrew Powell spent a year following two teams through roller-coaster seasons. The Liberty City Warriors, former national champs, will suffer the team’s first-ever losing season. The Palmetto Raiders, undefeated for two straight years, will be rewarded for good play with limo rides and steak dinners. But their flamboyant coach (the “Darth Vader of Pop Warner coaches”) will face defeat in a down-to-the-wire playoff game. We Own This Game is an inside-the-huddle look into a world of innocence and corruption, where every kickoff bares political, social, and racial implications; an unforgettable drama that shows us just what it is to win and to lose in America. “Powell elevates We Own This Game well above the average sports book to a significant sociological study.” —San Francisco Chronicle
Book Synopsis God and Football... Why Men Love the Game by : Patrick Greak
Download or read book God and Football... Why Men Love the Game written by Patrick Greak and published by Tate Publishing. This book was released on 2012-06-26 with total page 134 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In football, coaches must trust their players not to make the same mistake over and over again. However, God never gives up on us, no matter how many times we make mistakes or commit sins. Remember that sinning is different from a mistake. To sin against the law of God requires intent against the law of God and the original Ten Commandments that God gave Moses. The connection between religion and sports is everywhere in our culture. Athletes and fans alike are known for praising God for all success. But beyond these public displays of religion is a spiritual connection that exits between our faith and our favorite teams. God and Football: Why Men Love the Game takes an in-depth look at this connection to show the spiritual reasoning behind our passions for the game. Playing or watching the game of football is beneficial physically and spiritually. Real-time decisions made during a game simulate decisions that will be made later in life off the field. Yet risk is involved and attached to the activity. Injuries can and do occur during games, just as spiritual injuries occur in our daily lives. While football is a fierce game, it teaches us the importance of following the rules, embracing discipline, committing to a team, and trusting in a higher power. Football helps make men better by reminding us of our mortality as well as teaching us valuable life and spiritual lessons. Find out more about the connection between football and spirituality in God and Football: Why Men Love the Game.
