Book excerpt: Warriors and Peasants depicts the lives of the Don Cossacks in late Imperial Russia. The dual identity of the Cossacks, that of the steppe and of the settled Slavic areas, is emphasized as the key to their unique culture. The book explores how that identity manifested and preserved itself by focusing on the Cossack tradition, their economy, their families and their communities. Far from being moribund and close to collapse, the book concludes that the Cossack tradition remained among the most vibrant in the Empire.

Book excerpt: In Peasants, Warriors, and Wives, Keith Moxey examines woodcut images from the German Reformation that have often been ignored as a crude and inferior form of artistic production. In this richly illustrated study, Moxey argues that while they may not satisfy received notions of "art," they nevertheless constitute an important dimension of the visual culture of the period. Far from being manifestations of universal public opinion, as a cursory acquaintance with their subject matter might suggest, such prints were the means by which the reformed attitudes of the middle and upper classes were disseminated to a broad popular audience.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Being a teenager is tough. Especially when you have to live in the jungle and carry an assault rifle.Eighteen-year-old Gabriel and his twin sister, Samantha, join the revolution after death squads murder their parents and ransack their small village. A new totalitarian regime has taken control of the country, and as the army moves through the countryside – leaving destruction in its wake – it becomes clear to Gabriel that no matter which side you're on, nobody wins. The rebels face daily hardship and live under constant fear of counter-insurgency patrols, and Gabriel learns the hard way that the most dangerous threats can sometimes come from within. But adversity forges character, and Gabriel finds a mentor in the form of Sergeant Yos, his immediate superior and former soldier who left the army under mysterious circumstances.Armed with nothing but cold war relics and bravado, Gabriel and Samantha lead the rebels' efforts to take back their land, as long as their luck holds and they don't run out of ammo. Hell-bent on stopping them – and squashing them under his booth – is an army major with few scruples and zero qualms about destroying the young insurgent group, whatever the cost. Can Gabriel and the rebels hold out long enough to make a stand against an implacable foe, or will they be crushed under the weight of the largest military in Central America?Set against the backdrop of the beautiful Cuchumatan Mountains and the lush, green countryside of the Guatemalan highlands, Insurrection is a glimpse into the lives and emotions of ordinary people doing extraordinary things, in the name of love and country.

Book excerpt: This book provides new insights into the creation and use of written texts in medieval Japan. Drawing upon lawsuits from Ategawa no shō in central Japan between the early eleventh and early fourteenth centuries, the author analyses the use of writing by various social groups - temple priests, warriors and peasants. Though these social groups had different levels of literacy and accordingly followed different communicative traditions, their use of writing had common features. In the semi-literate society of medieval Japan the dissemination and reception of written texts took place primarily through speaking and hearing. Documents of the medieval period therefore had a distinctly oral characteristic. Priests, warriors and peasants all alluded to motifs in their legal pleas that were in essence given by the oral world of tales, legends and gossip. By showing that literacy was not in conflict but interacted with orality, the author uncovers an important aspect of the use of the written word in medieval Japan.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book, leading western specialists and Russian and Ukrainian feminists examine how gender has shaped Russian and Ukrainian history from the twelfth century to the present. In particular, they analyse the current backlash against women's emancipation. Using new archival materials and the insights of feminist theory, the contributors explore the relevance of gender equality and difference in Russian history. They find that women have not merely submitted to the patriarchal system, but instead have found creative ways of resisting it. Chapters focusing on contemporary Russia discuss abortion, pornography, sexual minorities, young women's lifestyles, the impact of economic reform on women and the development of the women's movement. This book will be of interest to students and specialists in Russian, Ukrainian and women's studies, as well as to historians, political scientists, sociologists and economists.
