As the first woman of color elected as the Vice President of the United States, Kamala Harris broke through many barriers and made history, energizing a host of women who have a lot to say. Seeing a model of themselves filling the second-most-powerful office in the Free World, women from Africa to California, Canada to Florida began writing to the new Vice President. Dear Kamala: Women Write to the New Vice President showcases a selection of these heartfelt and moving letters. Girl Scouts confide their fears for a future ravaged by climate change; a business owner in Harlem offers unflinching advice about the need for real investment in inner cities; civil rights activists share their stories, struggles, and successes over the decades. Filled with moving personal stories and heartbreaking tales of racial injustices suffered, Dear Kamala offers much more than kind words. They represent an offer of support and a call to action for all those who will be at Vice President Harris's side throughout the next four years.

Book Synopsis Warm Regards Inspiration 365 by : Elvie Guthrie-Lewis
Download or read book Warm Regards Inspiration 365 written by Elvie Guthrie-Lewis and published by Xulon Press. This book was released on 2017-10-23 with total page 396 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Devotional - Warm Regards, is full of Elvie Guthrie-Lewis' life stories. As her friends, we recognize ourselves in some of her writing; and in what she writes, we are further blessed by the words she has chosen to tell our stories. Our stories: our successes, and even some of our sorrows, are being used to glorify our Lord and Savior. What a blessing. What a joy. What an honor. Each meditative story concludes with Words of Love. As you read, you can imagine what Jesus is trying to say to each of us, what He is trying to teach us in His loving, contemplative way. There is no judgment, just stories to which we can each relate; stories that will warm our hearts; stories that will nurture us, and encourage us, as we grow in our faith. Elvie Guthrie-Lewis was born to Maurice and Ernestine Guthrie, on the beautiful Island of Jamaica, in the West Indies. She is the last of four children. At an early age, Elvie dreamed of becoming a teacher and a writer. She was an avid reader as a child, and even had her bungalow designed for writing, like some writers she had read about. She achieved her first goal to become a teacher, when she graduated from Shortwood Teachers' College in 1970. Elvie taught at the high school level for eight and a half years and spent two and a half years with the Jamaican Movement for the Advancement of Literacy (JAMAL) as a teacher trainer. Elvie immigrated to the United States in 1982 to advance her studies, and earned BS Degrees in Nutrition and Dietetics, and Institution Management. She went on to earn a MS Degree in Education; all from Alcorn State University. Elvie is a Registered Dietitian, a Certified Public Manager, an Alumni of the South Central Public Health Leadership Institute (Tulane University), and the Rotary Leadership Academy. She is married to Felton Lewis of New Orleans, and they live in Mississippi.

Book Synopsis Franz Werfel: The Faith of an Exile by : Lionel Steiman
Download or read book Franz Werfel: The Faith of an Exile written by Lionel Steiman and published by Wilfrid Laurier Univ. Press. This book was released on 2010-10-30 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Franz Werfel was born in Prague in 1890 and died in Beverly Hills in 1945, a popular and artistic success in Europe and America. Despite his Jewish birth and upbringing, he was attracted to Christianity at any early age, and although he never formally converted, he celebrated his own vision of it in his entire life's work. The origina sof that peculiar faith and the response it engendered in Werfel's work as he lived thorough the horrific end of Jewish life in Europe are treated here. Werfel was not a systematic thinker, and, while his writing contains much that is philosophical and theological, his eclecticism and idiosyncracy render any attempt to trace the specific origins of his thought or its relation to the work of contemporary philosophers and theologians highly problematic. Thus, this work is neither biography nor intellectual history in the strict sense—it goes beyond, melding the concerns of both genres into a thoughtful, comprehensive portrait of faith at work. Of interest to historians of the twentieth century as well as to students of that intriguing zone that lies between faith and art but is neither—or both.
