Book excerpt: Excerpt from Wards of Liberty Foreword in aim that no mere observer can hope to see more than an insignificant vista of the whole seething, swarming mass of hope, disillusion, growth, and decay. The opening through which I saw my vista was the school-room. I taught these babies and I loved them. The larger problems of maturity passed far from Room 8, but their shadow crossed its sunshine. This was inevitable in a community where all the life of a family, eating, sleeping, cooking, working, illness, death, birth, and prayer is often crowded into one small room. Speeches Delivered at the Eighteenth Ward Republican Festival: In Commemoration of the Birth of Washington The Eighteen Ward Republican Association commemorated the birth of Washington by a public festival at the Gramercy Park House, on Wednesday evening, February 22d, 1860. At 8 o'clock, the members of the Association and the invited guests proceeded to the dining saloon, where a sumptuous repast was provided. Elliot C. Cowdin, Esq., Chairman of the Committee of Arrangements, presided, while Job L. Black, Esq., President of the Association, and Wm. K. Strong, Esq., occupied seats at the head of the tables on either side of the President, supported at the opposite ends by Messrs. James M. Cross, Jas. M. Thomson, and J. Austin Stevens, Jr. Rev. Dr. Bellows, in a very appropriate prayer, invoked the Divine blessing upon the assemblage and upon the cause of liberty; after which, the company partook of the bountiful provision that had been made for the gratification of their alimentive desires. Having spent an agreeable hour in discoursing the bill of fare, the cloth was removed and the intellectual programme was presented by - The President, who, in announcing the regular toasts, addressed the company as follows: Speech Of Elliot C. Cowdin, Esq. Fellow Republicans: - In assuming the duties of the post which the unmerited partiality of the Committee of Arrangements has assigned me, I claim your generous indulgence. While I am not insensible of the honor, I know full well that there are many, very many, of my fellow Republicans of the Eighteenth Ward, better qualified to discharge the duties of this occasion, but there is no one more earnestly devoted to the noble cause which has brought us together. (Applause.) We are here as neighbours and friends, to interchange friendly and social salutations, and to declare anew our unalterable attachment to the principles of the Fathers of the Republic. We are assembled as Republicans, to rejoice together with exceeding joy, that, after a well-fought battle, a signal victory has been won by the Representatives of the nation, and that the Banner of the Constitution is again planted on the walls of the Capitol. (Loud cheers.) We meet to commemorate the birthday of the pure and noble Washington - that hero, sage, and patriot, "whom Providence left childless that a nation might call him Father." Unlike most textbooks in American Government, Liberty, Order, and Justice seeks to familiarize the student with the basic principles of the Constitution, and to explain their origin, meaning, and purpose. Particular emphasis is placed on federalism and the separation of powers. These features of the book, together with its extensive and unique historical illustrations, make this new edition of Liberty, Order, and Justice especially suitable for introductory classes in American Government and for high school students in advanced placement courses.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Ward of the Golden Gate There were dangerous and unknown depths in Montgomery Street and on the Plaza, and the wheels of a passing carriage hopelessly mired had to be lifted by the volunteer hands of a half dozen high-booted wayfarers, whose wearers were sufficiently content to believe that a woman, a child, or an invalid was behind its closed windows, without troubling themselves or the occupant by looking through the glass. It was a carriage that, thus released, eventually drew up before the superior public edifice known as the City Hall. From it a woman, closely veiled, alighted, and quickly entered the building. A few passers-by turned to look at her, partly from the rarity of the female figure at that period, and partly from the greater rarity of its being well formed and even ladylike. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Early American advocates of freedom did not believe in religious liberty in spite of their Christianity, but explicitly because of their individual faith in Christ, which had been molded and instructed by the Bible. The greatest evidence of their commitment to liberty can be found in their willingness to support the cause of freedom for those different from themselves. The assertion that the Enlightenment is responsible for the American Bill of Rights may be common, but it is devoid of any meaningful connection to the actual historical account. History reveals a different story, intricately gathered from the following: Influence of William Tyndale's translation work and the court intrigues of Henry VIII Spread of the Reformation through the eyes of Martin Luther, John Knox, and John Calvin The fight to establish a bill of rights that would guarantee every American citizen the free exercise of their religion. James Madison played a key role in the founding of America and in the establishment of religious liberty. But the true heroes of our story are the common people whom Tyndale inspired and Madison marshaled for political victory. These individuals read the Word of God for themselves and truly understood both the liberty of the soul and the liberty of the mind. The History of Religious Liberty is a sweeping literary work that passionately traces the epic history of religious liberty across three centuries, from the turbulent days of medieval Europe to colonial America and the birth pangs of a new nation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Virginia Woolf once commented that the central image in Robinson Crusoe is an object—a large earthenware pot. Woolf and other critics pointed out that early modern prose is full of things but bare of setting and description. Explaining how the empty, unvisualized spaces of such writings were transformed into the elaborate landscapes and richly upholstered interiors of the Victorian novel, Cynthia Sundberg Wall argues that the shift involved not just literary representation but an evolution in cultural perception. In The Prose of Things, Wall analyzes literary works in the contexts of natural science, consumer culture, and philosophical change to show how and why the perception and representation of space in the eighteenth-century novel and other prose narratives became so textually visible. Wall examines maps, scientific publications, country house guides, and auction catalogs to highlight the thickening descriptions of domestic interiors. Considering the prose works of John Bunyan, Samuel Pepys, Aphra Behn, Daniel Defoe, Samuel Richardson, David Hume, Ann Radcliffe, and Sir Walter Scott, The Prose of Things is the first full account of the historic shift in the art of describing.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: War Movies and Economics: Lessons from Hollywood’s Adaptations of Military Conflict applies ongoing research in the relatively new genre of economics in popular media to Hollywood’s war movies. Whether inadvertently or purposefully, these movies provide numerous examples of how economic principles often play an important role in military conflict. The authors of the chapters included in this edited collection work to illustrate economics lessons portrayed in adaptations such as Band of Brothers, Conspiracy, The Dirty Dozen, Dunkirk, Memphis Belle, Saving Private Ryan, Schindler’s List, Spartacus, Stalag 17, and Valkyrie. Aspects of these stories show how key economic principles of scarcity, limited resources, and incentives play important roles in military conflict. The movies also provide an avenue for discussion of the economics of public goods provision, the modern economic theory of bureaucracy, and various game-theoretic concepts such as strategic moves and commitment devices. Where applicable, lessons from closely related fields such as management are also provided. This book is ideal reading for students of economics looking for an approachable route to understanding basic principles of economics and game theory. It is also accessible to amateur and professional historians, and any reader interested in popular culture as it relates to television, movies, and military history.
