Book excerpt: Looting has long been recognized as one of the crimes committed by the Third Reich during World War II, a crime which stripped economic wealth and artistic treasures from the populations the Nazis terrorized. This historical text reveals the shocking extent of looting by Allied forces, exploring their thievery against the Germans and others. It follows the journey of the Hungarian Crown Treasure from a muddy oil drum in Austria to Fort Knox and back to Hungary, and discusses numerous lost treasures ranging from priceless art works to rare manuscripts, including the earliest known printing by the Gutenberg press.

Book Synopsis European Stamp Issues of the Second World War by : Dr David Parker
Download or read book European Stamp Issues of the Second World War written by Dr David Parker and published by The History Press. This book was released on 2021-06-30 with total page 504 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Today, European nations still use stamps to commemorate aspects of a nation's culture, history and achievements. During the Second World War, however, stamps were considered far more important in conveying political and ideological messages about their country's change in fortunes – whether it was as triumphant occupier, willing or unwilling ally, or oppressed victim. Some issues and overprints contained obvious messages, but many others were skillfully designed and subtle in their intentions. Stamps and their accompanying postmarks offer an absorbing and surprisingly detailed insight into the hopes and fears of nations at this tumultuous time. This remarkable collection examines and interprets the stamps of twenty-two countries across western and eastern Europe. The glorification of the Führer and Germany on the stamps of countries he most oppressed was inevitable, but many issues are ambiguous and indicative of the rival ethnic and political forces striving to attain influence and power. Desperate to unite the people, Soviet Russia resorted to images of the nation's heroic achievements under the Tsars; the mutually hostile puppet states Hitler and Mussolini allowed to emerge out of conquered Yugoslavia lost no time in issuing stamps proclaiming their cultural diversity; and Vichy France sought to justify its existence with issues linking past glories under Louis XIV and Napoleon with an equally glorious future alongside Hitler. These and many more stories reveal the aspirations, assumptions and anxieties of so many nations as their destinies hung in the balance.
Book Synopsis Allies at Odds by : Eugenie M. Blang
Download or read book Allies at Odds written by Eugenie M. Blang and published by Rowman & Littlefield Publishers. This book was released on 2011-04-16 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Allies at Odds examines America's Vietnam policy from 1961 to 1968 in an international context by focusing on the United States' relationship with its European partners France, West Germany, and Great Britain. The European response to America's Vietnam policy provides a framework to assess this important chapter in recent American history within the wider perspective of international relations. Equally significant, the respective approaches to the "Vietnam question" by the Europeans and Americans reveal the ongoing challenge for nation-states of transcending narrowly defined state-centered policies for a global perspective pursuant of common goals among the trans-Atlantic allies. Blang explores the failure of France, West Germany, and Great Britain to significantly influence American policy-making.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from War Stamps of the Allies, 1914 1920: An Historical Record No event of modern history has been so far-reaching in its consequences as the Great War of the Nations, which, bursting like a thunderbolt from out a tranquil sky, over Europe on that fateful August day of 1914, spread in the ensuing four and a half years over the whole of the civilised world. In those parl'ous times nothing was so insignificant as to escape its all-embracing influence no phase or feature of daily life but experienced its dire effect. By far the greater pro-portion of postage stamps issued within its duration owed their inception directly or in directly to causes arising out of the war itself, and in them may be traced the whole grim record of. Those eventful years. Consequently the postage stamps of this epoch are possessed of a peculiar and abiding interest, all their own, by reason of their historic and romantic associations, as dumb witnesses to. The progress of the War of Wars, and sign-posts along the path to Victory and Universal Peace. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Synopsis The American Stamp by : Laura Goldblatt
Download or read book The American Stamp written by Laura Goldblatt and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2023-02-13 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: More than three thousand different images appeared on United States postage stamps from the middle of the nineteenth century to the end of the twentieth. Limited at first to the depiction of a small cast of characters and patriotic images, postal iconography gradually expanded as the Postal Service sought to depict the country’s history in all its diversity. This vast breadth has helped make stamp collecting a widespread hobby and made stamps into consumer goods in their own right. Examining the canon of nineteenth- and twentieth-century American stamps, Laura Goldblatt and Richard Handler show how postal iconography and material culture offer a window into the contested meanings and responsibilities of U.S. citizenship. They argue that postage stamps, which are both devices to pay for a government service and purchasable items themselves, embody a crucial tension: is democracy defined by political agency or the freedom to buy? The changing images and uses of stamps reveal how governmental authorities have attempted to navigate between public service and businesslike efficiency, belonging and exclusion, citizenship and consumerism. Stamps are vehicles for state messaging, and what they depict is tied up with broader questions of what it means to be American. Goldblatt and Handler combine historical, sociological, and iconographic analysis of a vast quantity of stamps with anthropological exploration of how postal customers and stamp collectors behave. At the crossroads of several disciplines, this book casts the symbolic and material meanings of stamps in a wholly new light.
