Book excerpt: The South Wales Borderers and its predecessor units were one of the most distinguished, as well as one of the most venerable, line regiments in the British Army. Formed in 1689, the year of the 'Glorious Revolution' the regiment played a major part in Britain's 18th century wars with France, and in colonial conflicts of the 19th century. It's finest hour came at the legendary defence of Rorke's Drift in the 1879 Zulu War, when a record 11 VCs were won in a single day - seven of them to the regiment's members - during the successful and heroic siege of the Natal mission station against Zulu warrior. This magnificent regimental history concludes with the story of the Borderers in the Great War and its aftermath.

Book excerpt: Best known for its heroic role in the defence of Rorke's Drift, during the Zulu War of 1879, when it won seven of the 14 Victora Crosses awarded, the 24th Regiment, South Wales Borderers, was an exceptional unit, and this is an exceptionally good history. Founded in 1689, the year after the Glorious Revolution, the Duke of Marlborough was appointed the Regiment's Hon. Colonel, and it took part in his four great victories of Blenheim, Ramillies, Oudenarde and Malplaquet. It helped defend the island of Minorca in the War of the Austrian Succession, and saw colonial service in Canada, Egypt, the Punjab and the Indian Mutiny before its immortal actions in the Zulu War. The history contains several exciting descriptions of the defence of Rorke's Drift, including the official report by the Officer Commanding, Lt. Chard, written within hours of the battle. There are biographies and medal citations of the VCs won that day, and a portrait photograph of Lt Gonville Bromhead VC, Chard's second-in-command. In addition the history contains colour plates of regimental uniforms at different stages of its life, portrait photographs and officers and commanders' rolls.

Book excerpt: The campaigns of a famous county regiment George Paton's comprehensive book describes the history of the 24th Regiment of Foot from its creation in 1689 to the time when it became known as the South Wales Borderers towards the end of the 19th century. Virtually all British regiments can lay claim to long and glorious histories and the 24th is no exception. However, for most modern readers this regiment is notable for its service during the Anglo-Zulu War of 1879, during which time men of the 24th fought to the last at Isandlwana and heroically defended the mission station at Rorkes Drift. Readers will be interested to note that a substantial portion of the this book is devoted to the activities of the 24th--ten of whose officers and men were awarded the Victoria Cross in this campaign--both before, during and after these momentous events in South Africa. Although the 24th campaigned all over the world and took an active part under Wellington during the Peninsular War against Napoleon's French forces, the regiment was perhaps most particularly noteworthy on two occasions prior to the Zulu campaign, during the War of Spanish Succession where it fought at Blenheim, Ramilles, Oudenarde and Malplaquet, and during the Second Sikh War. The Battle of Chillianwallah was a particularly hard fought and savage experience for the regiment which suffered horrific casualties. The 24th also fought at Goojerat and later in the Indian Mutiny of 1857. This is an excellent regimental history and an essential component of every library of the Zulu War. Leonaur editions are newly typeset and are not facsimiles; each title is available in softcover and hardback with dustjacket; our hardbacks are cloth bound and feature gold foil lettering on their spines and fabric head and tail bands.

The conflict, fought against a native adversary the British initially under-estimated, is remarkable for battles that included perhaps the most humiliating defeat in British military history-the Battle of Isandlwana, January 22, 1879-and one of its most heroic feats of martial arms-the defense of Rorke's Drift, January 22-23, 1879. While lasting only six months, it is one of the most examined, studied, and debated conflicts in Victorian military history. Anglo-Zulu War, 1879: A Selected Bibliography is a research guide and tool for identifying obscure publications and source materials in order to encourage continued original and thought-provoking contributions to this popular field of historical study. From the student or neophyte to the study of the Anglo-Zulu War, its battles, and its opponents to the more experienced historian or scholar, this selected bibliography is a must for anyone interested in the 1879 Anglo-Zulu War.

Book excerpt: In August 1914 the SWB consisted of two regular battalions, the 1st in Bordon with 3rd Brigade 1st Division, the 2nd in Tientsin; the 3rd Special Reserve Battalion in Brecon; and one Territorial battalion, the Brecknockshire Battalion, also in Brecon. By the end of the war a further 17 battalions had been raised eight of which went on active service and all of them feature in this excellent history, even if only briefly in the case of those that did not leave the UK. Total dead numbered some 5,500, 64 Battle Honours were awarded and six VCs were won. There is a list of Honours and Awards, including Mention in Despatches and foreign awards, and also the Roll of Honour in which officers are listed alphabetically, other ranks alphabetically by battalions; place and date of death are not given. Battalions of the regiment served on the Western Front, at Gallipoli (2nd and 4th), in Macedonia (7th and 8th) and Mesopotamia (4th). Two of the active service battalions, 11th and 12th, were disbanded in France in Feb 1918 when divisions in the BEF were reduced from twelve to nine battalions. The 1st Battalion landed in France on 13 August 1914 with 3rd Brigade, 1st Division, and stayed with them for the rest of the war, fighting on the Western Front. The 2nd Battalion was in China when war broke out, and its first operation was the capture of the German naval base of Tsingtao, in cooperation with the Japanese, and with this accomplished in November 1914 the battalion returned to the UK where it arrived in January 1915. Back home, it was allocated to the newly formed 'incomparable' 29th Division, the last of the regular divisions to be formed (apart from the Guards Division) and with which it landed on Gallipoli in April that year. After Gallipoli it went to France with the division, arriving in March 1916, and there it stayed to the end. The Brecknocks served throughout the war in Aden and India, the 4th went to Gallipoli with 13th (Western) Division and from there to Mesopotamia where it won two of regiment's six VCs. The 5th and 6th Battalions were Pioneers and fought in France as divisional pioneer battalions while the 7th and 8th, both in 22nd Division, after only a month in France went with the division to Macedonia in November 1915 where they saw out the rest of the war. The 10th and 11th Battalions served with 38th (Welsh) Division in France from the end of 1915, and finally the 12th (Bantam) Battalion crossed to France in June 1916 with 119th Brigade 40th Division in which it served till disbanded in Feb 1918.

Book excerpt: In their companion volume to British Army Cap Badges of the First World War, authors Peter Doyle and Chris Foster present an overview of the main cap badges worn by the British Army during the Second World War, which continued the rich and varied tradition of British regimental insignia. This book describes and illustrates, for the first time in high quality full colour, the main types of cap badge worn. With many amalgamations, war-raised units and special forces, British military insignia from the period have a surprising range that differs substantially from that worn by the soldiers of the previous generation. As in the first book, this volume contains contemporary illustrations of the soldiers themselves wearing the badges. Employing the skills of an established writer (and collector) and artist, it provides a unique reference guide for anyone interested in the British Army of the period.

Book excerpt: The Anglo-Zulu War lasted only six months in 1879, but in that relatively short time twenty-three men were awarded the Victoria Cross for gallantry under most trying and dangerous circumstances. Zulu warriors gave no mercy and expected none in return, yet half of the awards were given to men who went back into the midst of fierce fighting to rescue stranded comrades, well-aware that they risked suffering a particularly brutal death. Two men received posthumous awards for their efforts to save the Queens color of their regiment after the disastrous engagement against overwhelming numbers of warriors at Isandlwana, and perhaps the most famous of all awards of the Victoria Cross were the eleven gained for the immortal defence of Rorkes Drift, the battle brought back to the public consciousness by the motion picture _Zulu!_The conflict has never left the publics imagination, and continues to stir hot debate among military historians and enthusiasts. With information compiled over four decades by James W. Bancroft, a well-known and respected historian and author of several publications on the subject, this book brings together more information about the men than has ever before been collected together in one publication.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Through the night of 22/23 January 1879, a small garrison of British soldiers behind a makeshift barricade of bags and boxes successfully defended the storehouse and field hospital at Rorke's Drift, against an army of Zulu warriors who outnumbered them by about twenty to one. This heroic stand became on of the most famous actions in the history of the British Army, and inspired the epic film 'Zulu!' But who were these men who made such a stubborn resistance when all seemed lost, and what legacy have they left us? For the first time, details of the lives of all these men have been collected into one reference work, categorised in the counties to which they were associated, in the form of biographical tributes. The Rorke's Drift Men is a valuable addition to any military library.
