Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The word (waqf) and its plural from awqaf are derived from Arabic root Verb which means "to stop", or " to hold" " to keep" or to prevent property from passing into the hands of a third person. In a religious connotation, the term waqf means to protect and preserve the property in such a way that remains intact but its usufruct is dedicated for charitable purposes in perpetuity. Endowments or awqaf (the plural of waqf) resemble common law trusts, with the trustee being the institution or individual in charge of the waqf and the beneficiary usually being the whole community. Awqaf can be used not only to provide immediate necessities to the poor, but also to create or strengthen business support institutions that can lower the cost of doing business for the poor. Awqaf can also be used to support and build infrastructure institutions that can improve corporate governance and reduce the cost of doing business. For example, information bureaus, market regulatory bodies, the provision of accountancy services, and other such shared services for a group or for the entire society can be funded through waqf. Thus, this paper focuses on the application of these concepts and some possible roles that waqf may play in the socio-economic development of the Muslim societies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Book explains Waqf as "Sadaqah Jariyah" or "continuous Sadaqah." The Waqf is created by giving away an asset, which has eternal value of ample benefit(s) to its giver. The Sadaqah, is, however, religious. It involves establishing a Mosque, or providing basic necessities and/or welfare to people such as building a house for the wayfarer, especially during one's lifetime so that he/she will get the reward for his/her own good deed after death. An important characteristic of Waqf relates to its objectives, which is the idea of giving charity, providing socio-economic relief to the needy, the poor and also giving education to people in the course of Allah. This Book determines the Waqf management and its process of succession. The Waqf provider can give guidelines on the method he/she likes the Waqf to be implemented. Most Awqaf are perpetual in nature and very often this is emphasized in the Waqf deeds. The Book therefore sheds more light on the concept of Waqf, its meaning and historical development. . It is recommended to students, teachers and researchers of Waqf in Islamic jurisprudence.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Waqfs, or religious endowments, have long been at the very center of daily Islamic life, establishing religious, cultural, and welfare institutions and serving as a legal means to keep family property intact through several generations. In this book R. D. McChesney focuses on the major Muslim shrine at Balkh--once a flourishing city on an ancient trade route in what is now northern Afghanistan--and provides a detailed study of the political, economic, and social conditions that influenced, and were influenced by, the development of a single religious endowment. From its founding in 1480 until 1889, when the Afghan government took control of it, the waqf at Balkh was a formidable economic force in a financially dynamic region, particularly during those times when the endowment's sacred character and the tax privileges it acquired gave its managers considerable financial security. This study sheds new light on the legal institution of waqf within Muslim society and on how political conditions affected the development of socio-religious institutions throughout Central Asia over a period of four hundred years. Book excerpt: Dr Kozlowski's important study pioneers a fresh approach to the study of a critical Muslim institution: the endowments or awqaf which almost everywhere in the Islamic world provide support for mosques, schools and shrines. The wealthier Muslims who establish endowments inevitably have an eye on social, political and economic conditions and have traditionally used awqaf as part of an effort to preserve their wealth and influence, especially in periods of change and uncertainty. The book focuses on the use of endowments by Muslims suffering the dislocations caused by the imposition of British rule in India and examines in detail the social and political implications of the controversy over endowments that took place in the imperial courts and councils. The author's observations and insights can be applied to many periods and places in the Muslim world and his novel approach will attract all those interested in the study of Islam.

Setting an agenda for further researchers in the field of waqf, this comprehensive high-level analysis, with case studies from leading jurisdictions across the world, is a key resource for researchers, policymakers and institutions interested in charitable endowments, Islamic finance, and social finance.

Book excerpt: Islamic Social Finance provides an introduction to the Waqf system, which has played a significant socio-economic role throughout the history of Islamic civilization. In a contemporary framework, Waqf creates new networks between micro-entrepreneurs, Small and Medium Sized Enterprises (SMEs), and entrepreneurship through voluntary donations made by individuals in a society. In other contexts, Waqf supports the financial system and contributes to the UN sustainable development goals (SDGs).
