Book excerpt: From the 1950s to the 1970s Walter Gordon was the voice of English Canadian nationalism, first as chair of the Royal Commission on Canada's Economic Prospects, then as a minister in Lester B. Pearson's cabinet, and finally as founder and honorary chair of the Committee for an Independent Canada. In the late 1960s many Canadians heeded Gordon's call for limits on the level of American investment in Canadian industry and joined with him to form a broad movement to limit American influence in Canada.

Book excerpt: Not only does this hilarious fictional satire unveil previously unknown secrets regarding what went on behind the plots and plans of the Nixon White House, but it corrects some of the purported truths that have been accepted for decades. Gordon Walter is a former Nixon confidant so undercover that his name never appears in a single Watergate reference and nor does he appear on any secret White House tape made throughout the administration, and yet here he reveals that he had access to everything that was going on. "What did Chicago have to do with the Watergate burglary? What is the real story behind the notorious 181/2-minute gap in Nixons secret tapes? And who exactly is Gordon Walter?" A unique, definitive look at one of the most famous episodes in modern American history, Walter sets the record straight and ends the cover-up for once and for all.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Composed after the collapse of his political hopes, Milton's great poems Paradise Lost, Paradise Regained, and Samson Agonistes are an effort to understand what it means to be a poet on the threshold of a post-theological world. The argument of Delirious Milton, inspired in part by the architectural theorist Rem Koolhaas's Delirious New York, is that Milton's creative power is drawn from a rift at the center of his consciousness over the question of creation itself. This rift forces the poet to oscillate deliriously between two incompatible perspectives, at once affirming and denying the presence of spirit in what he creates. From one perspective the act of creation is centered in God and the purpose of art is to imitate and praise the Creator. From the other perspective the act of creation is centered in the human, in the built environment of the modern world. The oscillation itself, continually affirming and negating the presence of spirit, of a force beyond the human, is what Gordon Teskey means by delirium. He concludes that the modern artist, far from being characterized by what Benjamin (after Baudelaire) called "loss of the aura," is invested, as never before, with a shamanistic spiritual power that is mediated through art.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Crown corporations are widely regarded as a Canadian invention. Since 1841 they have been dexterously implemented and hotly debated as instruments of public policy. However the failures of a number of state-run enterprises in the twentieth century have led a majority of Canadians to conclude that government has no place in the boardrooms of the nation. Matthew Bellamy's comprehensive account of Polymer's rise and evolution contradicts this widely held position and brings to light the accomplishments of one of Canada's pioneering crown corporations.
