Book excerpt: ABOUT THE BOOK When The Glass Castle made the bestseller list and book groups everywhere were featuring it as their headliner, I shied away from the book. As a writer, and an instructor of literature, I tend to be skeptical of the bestseller list. Undoubtedly these are entertaining books, but I usually can't come up with a solid rationale for teaching them to a writing or literature class. So I didn't read The Glass Castle when it was at its most popular. However, when I started teaching memoir writing classes, The Glass Castle came to mind. I decided to give it a try. Reading it, I was surprised at how intense the book was, but also how deeply it resonated with its reader, and how engaging the prose was. I started teaching it to show students how to be courageous in their writing and write with honesty but in a way that pulls in their readers. What I most admired about Jeannette Walls was her ability to be forgiving and compassionate in her telling of the story. MEET THE AUTHOR Born in Port Huron, Michigan, Kathryn Prout has worked as a small town dance teacher, small city nonprofit coordinator, and after school poetry workshop leader for teens. While she's currently busy farming in Ireland, Kathryn always makes sure she has time to read, write, and of course, run. EXCERPT FROM THE BOOK The Glass Castle is a poignant memoir about a dysfunctional but lively family, told from the perspective of the second daughter of four children. Jeannette Walls is three years old when the story begins and well into her adult life when it ends. Her parents, Rex and Rose Mary Walls, are troubled people who struggle with their own issues while trying to raise four children. Neither parent can hold down a job for any length of time. They move around with their children until they finally settle in Welch, West Virginia. In Welch, near Rex's family, they live in squalid conditions. From the time Jeannette and her siblings are young, though, their father has grand plans to build the Glass Castle, taking out his blueprints and showing his ornate design of their home. As the kids get older, they lose faith in their father ever building the Glass Castle, but he does teach them to have dreams. Each child escapes to New York City to realize his or her dreams the way their father didn't.

Book excerpt: Never mind the glass ceiling. In the workplace today there's a glass wall. Men and women can see each other clearly through the divide, but they don't speak the same language or have the same expectations. And as a result, women and their careers are suffering. With more women than ever in the workforce, but still too few in the boardroom, now is the time to address the assumptions and miscommunication holding women back. This book gives women the tools they need to master any situation. Drawing on Unerman and Jacob's own experience in male-dominated businesses, as well as over a hundred interviews with both men and women, The Glass Wall provides clear, smart and easy-to apply strategies for success. From unlocking ambition and developing resilience to nurturing creativity and getting noticed, these are the skills that everyone needs to learn to help break down that wall and create better workplaces for all.

Book excerpt: Memories are the ultimate contradiction. They can warm us on our coldest days or they can freeze a loved one out of our lives forever. The McCarthy family has a trove of warm memories. Of innocent first kisses. Of sumptuous family meals. Of wondrous lessons learned at the foot of a rocking chair. But they also have had their share of icy ones. Of words that can never be unsaid. Of choices that can never be unmade. Of actions that can never be undone. Following the death of his beloved wife, John McCarthy Grandpa John calls his family back home. It is time for them to face the memories they have made, both warm and cold. Only then can they move beyond them and into the future. A rich portrait of a family at a crossroad, THE ROCKIN' CHAIR is Steven Manchester s most heartfelt and emotionally engaging novel to date. If family matters to you, it is a story you must read."

Book excerpt: “The practicality and clarity make this a valuable contribution to collections in academic and public libraries.” — Library Journal, Starred Review A new, important, and richly detailed guide to understanding gender bias with practical solutions for leaders, workplace allies, and individual women. Gender bias is a powerful but hidden force that is still holding women back, keeping them from achieving their full potential and limiting organizations from achieving the creativity, problem solving, and growth that are possible with a diverse workforce. In this revealing new book, Amy Diehl and Leanne Dzubinski shine a new light on gender bias in the workplace, uncovering the barriers that work like glass walls surrounding women. Through their original research, they have discovered six core factors and multiple subfactors of bias, giving names to some elements for the first time ever. Their findings and analysis present a new, important, and richly detailed guidebook to understanding gender bias. They reveal: How male privilege, the bedrock on which gender bias is built, results in a workplace created by men and for men How women encounter disproportionate constraints in that workplace, being expected to play supportive roles to men The surprising ways in which women experience insufficient support based on gender The concept of devaluation, and how it tells women they don’t belong at work The troubling ways women face hostility to keep them in their supposed place, merely because of their gender How the combined weight of these barriers leads to acquiescence, when women internalize the obstacles and adapt to the limitations The barriers identified, and the subcomponents of each, are destined to become the framework for understanding gender bias. Glass Walls provides a roadmap to shatter barriers holding women back once and for all.

She strives to ensure people are motivated by what they love and lead from the heart because that’s the beginning and ending of life. Scripts Among Her Glass Walls is a complication of odes and an introduction to parables, which invoke truth while honoring the eye of soul. The eye is your heart and any man, who walks in alignment with the eye of his soul knows peace. What you feed consumes your soul. There are people who love you; you have to be willing to give them a chance. Your words become you. When a person doesn’t feel loved; it’s rare that you’ll find them walking within the call of your eye.... Everything begins and ends with love. I fall in love with Spirits; an unconventional woman with an abstract mind. Her soul has been placed here before; many moons ago, beyond time. Kyemma’s odes and parables flow within the eye of your soul, helping you to view the many facets and dimensions of life, through the eastern eye of the human soul. For, we are the vessels who carry the souls, which speak. The soul speaks through the eye and the eye’s the heart. The heart is meant to transcend the minds of men in the light and dark realms we encompass. We are nothing, but we become who and what we are by aligning our mind with the eye of our soul. This is when a man is most powerful. For, the journey starts within you; you just have to realize how powerful you are.

Book excerpt: Half a century ago a rag-tag group of innovators was building a foundation for modern American rock climbing from a makeshift home base in Yosemite. Photographer Glen Denny was a key figure in this golden age of climbing, capturing pioneering feats on camera while tackling challenging ascents himself. In entertaining short pieces enlivened by his iconic black-and-white images of Yosemite's big wall legends, Denny reveals a young man's coming of age and provides a vivid look at Yosemite’s early climbing culture. He relates such precarious achievements as hauling water in glass gallon jugs up the east face of Washington Column, nailing the 750-foot Rostrum in a punishing heat wave, and dangling overnight on El Capitan’s Dihedral Wall in a lightning storm. Each true tale captures the spirit of historic Camp 4, where Denny and others plan the next big climb while living on the cheap and dodging park rangers.

Stronger organizations, more dynamic teams, and healthier relationships. Now Miller takes readers to the next level to show how they can use the power of the QBQ! and personal accountability every day. When a light switch is flipped the flow of energy that is released reaches the lightbulb in an instant, bringing it to life. Similarly, asking the right kind of question-a QBQ-is the first step to empowering what Miller calls the Advantage Principles-five essential practices that will lead to a richer experience in every aspect of life: - LEARNING: live an engaged and energized life through positive personal growth and change - OWNERSHIP: attain goals by becoming a solution-oriented person who solves problems - CREATIVITY: find new ways to achieve by succeeding "within the box" - SERVICE: build a legacy by helping others succeed - TRUST: develop deep and rewarding relationships With compelling real-life stories and keen insights, Miller demonstrates how anyone can find success and satisfaction by "flipping the switch."
