Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Travel Guide to Frankfurt, German Beautiful City. Tourism, Business, Vacation. Glinting with glass, steel and concrete skyscrapers, Frankfurt-on-the-Main (pronounced 'mine') is unlike any other German city. The focal point of a conurbation of 5.5 million inhabitants, 'Mainhattan' is a high-powered finance and business hub, home to one of the world's largest stock exchanges and the gleaming headquarters of the European Central Bank, and famously hosts some of the world's most important trade fairs, attracting thousands of business travellers. Yet at its heart, Frankfurt is an unexpectedly traditional and charming city, with half-timbered buildings huddled in its quaint medieval Altstadt (old town), cosy apple-wine taverns serving hearty regional food, village-like neighbourhoods filled with outdoor cafes, boutiques and street art, and beautiful parks, gardens and riverside paths. The city's cache of museums is second in Germany only to Berlin's, and its nightlife and entertainment scenes are bolstered by a spirited student population. Frankfurt am Main, the dynamic and international financial and trade fair city with the most imposing skyline in Germany. This is the image that many visitors associate with the Main metropolis. But the city in the heart of Germany and Europe can offer many other facets and contrasting variety. Near to the skyscrapers you can find cosy Ebbelwei pubs and at the heart of the bustling city centre you can find historical sights again and again. Frankfurt is not just proud of its most famous son, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe. The Kaiserdom (Cathedral) and the Paulskirche, the cradle of German democracy, are also to be found here. Interesting destinations for excursions in and around Frankfurt turn your stay into a great experience and you will love to come back.

Book excerpt: The untold story of a group of Irish cities and their remarkable development before the age of industrialization A backward corner of Europe in 1600, Ireland was transformed during the following centuries. This was most evident in the rise of its cities, notably Dublin and Cork. David Dickson explores ten urban centers and their patterns of physical, social, and cultural evolution, relating this to the legacies of a violent past, and he reflects on their subsequent partial eclipse. Beautifully illustrated, this account reveals how the country’s cities were distinctive and—through the Irish diaspora—influential beyond Ireland’s shores.

Book excerpt: Generational dialogues between 40 world-renowned creatives exploring how the creative legacy of previous generations is being reinterpreted over time. Description What is this phenomenon we call ‘legacy’? This intangible inheritance that we eventually leave for our posterity? Is it the creative and intellectual heritage that one generation passes on to the next? Conceived by Lukas Feireiss, the book at hand tries to probe this open question by engaging in critical dialogue different generations of creatives, connectors and thinkers alike. In some cases, between inherent legacy of parent and child, in many cases between mentor and students, or simply between friends. The more than 40 illustrious contributors to this dialogue derive from an array of fields of knowledge and experience. Their stories often provide very personal insights into their work and life. They also reveal a broader perspective on the overall realms of art, design, architecture, music, literature, photography and curation in the 20th and 21st century. With contributions by Olafur Eliasson and Einar Thorsteinn, Lukas Feireiss and Ai Weiwei, Charlie and Rem Koolhaas, Francesca Gavin and Kerry James Marshall, Sophie Lovell and Dieter Rams, Hans-Ulrich Obrist and Yona Friedman, Shumon Basar and Ken Adam, Carson Chan and Phyllis Lambert, Rachel and Daniel Libeskind, Andres Ramirez and Denise Scott Brown, Aric Chen and Arata Isozaki, Ahmir Questlove Thompson and George Clinton and many more.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This two-volume set offers a comprehensive overview of major challenges faced by cities worldwide in the 21st century, and how cities in different geographic, economic, and political conditions are finding solutions to them. This two-volume encyclopedia examines ten critical issues that face cities across the globe today—environmental and societal struggles that affect the daily lives of city dwellers. Readers will gain a better understanding of our global neighbors and will be able to use this book in order to compare and contrast different approaches to critical issues in our world. Volume One examines employment and jobs; energy and sustainability; green spaces; housing and infrastructure; and migration and demographic changes. Volume Two discusses pollution; schools; traffic and transportation; violence, corruption, and organized crime; and waste management. Each issue begins with an introduction providing an overview of the issue from a global perspective. Following the introduction are ten alphabetically arranged world city profiles of cities that are struggling with the issue and cities that have found innovative solutions to deal with the crisis. The profiles explain how the problem came to be; consequences inhabitants face, such as compromised health, limited access to education, and high taxes with low wages; and failed and successful initiatives taken by city management.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Pedagogy of Observation argues that the fascination with learning about the past and new locations in panoramic form spread far from the traditional sites of popular entertainment and amusement. Although painted panoramas captivated audiences from Hamburg to Leipzig and Berlin to Vienna, relatively few people had direct access to this invention. Instead, most Germans in the early nineteenth century encountered panoramas for the first time through the written word. The panorama experience described inthis book centers on the emergence of a new type of visual language and self-fashioning in material culture adopted by Germans at the turn of the nineteenth century, one that took cues from the pedagogy of observing and interpreting space at panorama shows. By reading about what editors, newspaper correspondents, and writers referred to as “panoramas,” curious Germans learned about a new representational medium and a new way to organize and produce knowledge about the scenes on display, even if they had never seen these marvels in person. Like an audience member standing on a panorama platform at a show, reading about panoramas transported Germans to new worlds in the imagination, while maintaining a safe distance from the actual transformations being portrayed. A Pedagogy of Observation identifies how the German bourgeois intelligentsia created literature as panoramic stages both for self-representation and as a venue for critiquing modern life. These written panoramas, so to speak, helped German readers see before their eyes industrial transformations, urban development, scientific exploration, and new possibilities for social interactions. Through the immersive act of reading, Germans entered an experimental realm that fostered critical engagement with modern life before it was experienced firsthand. Surrounded on all sides by new perspectives into the world, these readers occupied the position of the characters that they read about in panoramic literature. From this vantage point, Germans apprehended changes to their immediate environment and prepared themselves for the ones still to come.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As utopias question social ills and express human wants and unfulfilled dreams, they offer insights into the problems, desires and ideals of a certain time. This book uses this lens to examine cultural representations of ageing and old age in utopian writings from the Renaissance till today. The individual chapters offer detailed analyses and interpretations of numerous utopias from Thomas More’s Utopia (1516) to contemporary science fiction. Through close readings, the book explores age-related fears and ideals and investigates how perceptions of ageing and the life course as well as attitudes towards older people have developed over the centuries. Covering a large time span and a broad range of different utopias, the book identifies long-term developments and also puts certain dreams such as that of ever-lasting youth into a wider perspective. It thus enriches both our understanding of the cultural history of ageing and the history of utopian thought. The book will appeal to scholars and students from the fields of cultural gerontology and utopian studies, as well as literary studies and cultural history more generally.

Book excerpt: Recent years have seen not just a revival, but a rebirth of the analogue record. More than merely a nostalgic craze, vinyl has become a cultural icon. As music consumption migrated to digital and online, this seemingly obsolete medium became the fastest-growing format in music sales. Whilst vinyl never ceased to be the favorite amongst many music lovers and DJs, from the late 1980s the recording industry regarded it as an outdated relic, consigned to dusty domestic corners and obscure record shops. So why is vinyl now experiencing a ‘rebirth of its cool’?Dominik Bartmanski and Ian Woodward explore this question by combining a cultural sociological approach with insights from material culture studies. Presenting vinyl as a multifaceted cultural object, they investigate the reasons behind its persistence within our technologically accelerated culture. Informed by media analysis, urban ethnography and the authors’ interviews with musicians, DJs, sound engineers, record store owners, collectors and cutting-edge label chiefs from a range of metropolitan centres renowned for thriving music scenes including London, New York, Tokyo, Melbourne, and especially Berlin, what emerges is a story of a modern icon.
