The author had "never walked further than his car door" when he decided to take on the 80 miles of the Yorkshire Wolds Way. Join him as he steps out on the trek from Hull to Filey. Whether you're planning to walk the Way or just fancy a chuckle at someone else's misfortunes, you are sure to be engrossed in this entertaining journey. The book also features "five East Yorkshire tales" - colourful accounts of Clensy's time working as a newspaper feature writer in the county. The tales cover everything from haunted houses to nuclear bunkers, from daily life at Spurn Head RNLI station to a first-hand account of training for the underground resistance "secret army" developed in case of invasion during the Second World War. "A great read" - Hull Daily Mail "It is David Clensy's colourful and pacy approach to telling these tales that lifts it well above the average walking book ... an entertaining, fast-paced volume. It is highly recommended." - Beverley Advertiser

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Yorkshire Wolds Way. A 79 mile walking route that starts near the Humber Bridge, and ends with fish and chips in sight at the Victorian seaside resort of Filey. It's a walk that takes you through a secret part of Yorkshire. One rather overshadowed by those famous Yorkshire Dales, and the North York Moors. Hidden it may be. But it's there. Not very well known. But there. So in the middle of a heatwave, two men left their respective homes, and headed to the town of Hessle, on the Humber Estuary. And they went on a walk. A walk along fields, through enchanting dales, quaint villages and so much more. Although there were quite a lot of fields. This is the important, and extremely true tale of that journey. Of the sights. Of the sounds. Of the conversations about Adrian Chiles. Of the benches. Of the questions. Like, just what is a wold, anyway? Includes a guide to planning your own walk on the Yorkshire Wolds Way National Trail.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This innovative study examines and analyses the wealth of evidence provided by the monumental effigies of Yorkshire, from the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries, including some of very high sculptural merit. More than 200 examples survive from the historic county in varying states of preservation. Together, they present a picture of the people able to afford them, at a time when the county was frequently at the forefront of national politics and administration, during the Scottish wars. Many monuments display remarkable realism, depicting people as they themselves wished to be remembered, and are accompanied by a great volume of contemporary sculptural and architectural detail. Stylistic analysis of the effigies themselves has been employed, better to understand how they relate to one another and give a firmer basis for their dating and production patterns. They are considered in relation to the history and material culture of the area at the time they were produced. A more soundly based appreciation of the sculptor's intentions and the aspirations of patrons is sought through close attention to the full extent of the visible evidence afforded by the monuments and their surroundings. The corpus is of sufficient size to permit meaningful analysis to shed light on aspects such as personal aspiration, social networks, patterns of supply and production, piety and wealth. It demonstrates the value of funerary monuments to the wider understanding of medieval society. The text will be accompanied by a comprehensive catalogue, making available a substantial body of research for the first time. The study considers the relationship between the monuments and related sculpture, architecture, painting, glass etc, together with contemporary documentary evidence, where it is available. This material and the underlying methodology are now available to illuminate monuments of the medieval period across the whole country. Its methods and messages extend understanding of all monuments, broadening its potential audience from the purely local to everyone concerned with medieval sculpture and church archaeology.
