Book Synopsis Revisiting the German Wage Structure by : Benjamin Bruns
Download or read book Revisiting the German Wage Structure written by Benjamin Bruns and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2013-08-26 with total page 46 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2013 in the subject Economics - Job market economics, grade: 1,0, Humboldt-University of Berlin (Angewandte Mikroökonometrie / Arbeitsmarktökonomik), course: Topics in Labour Economics, language: English, abstract: Using a large administrative data set, a recent study by Dustmann, Ludsteck, and Schönberg [2009] finds convincing evidence for rising wage inequality in West Germany during the past three decades. Their paper shows that the increase occurred above the median during the 1980s, and was augmented by rising inequality below the median in the 1990s. These results challenge the pervasive conception of the German wage structure being a paragon of stability. Within the scope of this seminar paper, I replicate parts of their analysis using a different data set, namely the German Socio-Economic Panel (GSOEP) for the period from 1984 to 2009. Using monthly and hourly earnings constructs, I assess the extent to which the results of Dustmann, Ludsteck, and Schönberg [2009] can be recovered from GSOEP data. I do so by exploring the wage distribution along several dimensions. In addition to this, I analyze composition-constant counterfactual wage densities using the kernel density reweighting method advanced by DiNardo, Fortin, and Lemieux [1996]. A provisional evaluation of my results suggests that I can confirm the majority of findings of the original paper along a qualitative dimension. A quantitative assessment, however, reveals considerable deviations.

Download or read book Do Public Sector Wages Affect Corruption? written by Roman Scheffler and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2011-08 with total page 57 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scientific Essay from the year 2010 in the subject Politics - International Politics - Region: Russia, grade: 68 (B+), University College London, course: Year Abroad Project, language: English, abstract: This paper will analyse one aspect of corruption that has been very present in the corruption literature after mid-1990s: the effect of wages on corruption. Van Rijckeghem's and Weder's model of the fair wage hypothesis will be first explained in this paper and then used on a cross-sectional study of 29 countries and on data from within Russia between the years 2001 - 2005. In doing so, Occam's Razor will be applied by only analysing the effects of wages on corruption, ignoring all historic and institutional aspects of a particular country. The results do not prove the fair wage hypothesis beyond doubt, although some evidence point that satisfactory wages will reduce corruption.

Book Synopsis Wages of Cross-Bearing and Debt of Sin by : Nathan Eubank
Download or read book Wages of Cross-Bearing and Debt of Sin written by Nathan Eubank and published by Walter de Gruyter. This book was released on 2013-03-01 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In comparison to Mark and Luke, the First Gospel contains a striking preponderance of economic language in passages dealing with sin, righteousness, and divine recompense. For instance, sin is described as a debt, and righteous deeds are said to earn wages with God or treasure in heaven. This study analyzes Matthew’s economic language against the backdrop of other early Jewish and Christian literature and examines its import for the narrative as a whole. Careful attention to this neglected aspect of Matthew’s theology demonstrates that some of the Gospel’s central claims about atonement, Jesus’ death and resurrection, and divine recompense emerge from this conceptual matrix. By tracing the narrative development of the economic motif, the author explains how Jesus saves his people from their sins and comes to be enthroned as Son of Man, sheds new light on numerous exegetical puzzles, and clarifies the relationship of ethical rigorism and divine generosity.

At a time when part-time jobs are ubiquitous, it is easy to forget that they are a relatively new phenomenon. This book explores the reasons behind the introduction of this specific form of work in West Germany and shows how it took root, in both norm and law, in factories, government authorities, and offices as well as within families and the lives of individual women. The author covers the period from the early 1950s, a time of optimism during the first postwar economic upswing, to 1969, the culmination of the legislative institutionalization of part-time work.
