Book excerpt: A simulation study to determine the effect on air traffic control when both Vertical and Short Takeoff and Landing aircraft are introduced into a terminal air traffic control environment was conducted. The simulation was conducted using the Model B Dynamic Air Traffic Control Simulator. Several approach conditions, various glide slope angles, and separation criteria were investigated to determine the effect on a terminal environment. It was concluded that Vertical and Short Takeoff and Landing aircraft could be accommodated in the terminal area using present operational procedures as contained in the Terminal Air Traffic Control Manual 7110.8. However, when Vertical and Short Takeoff and Landing aircraft reduced from terminal area speed to a slow final approach speed, difficulties were encountered in providing not only the desired spacing between these aircraft but between these aircraft and conventional aircraft in the sequence to and on the final approach course. These problems did not exist when Vertical and Short Takeoff and Landing aircraft used a final approach speed compatible with that of conventional aircraft. (Author).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A study has been undertaken to define hand-ling qualities criteria for V/STOL aircraft. With the current military requirements for helicopters and airplanes as a framework, modifications and additions were made for conversion to a preliminary set of V/STOL requirements using a broad background of flight experience and pilots' comments from VTOL and STOL aircraft, BLC (boundary-layer-control) equipped aircraft, variable stability aircraft, flight simulators and landing approach studies. The report contains a discussion of the reasoning behind and the sources of information leading to suggested requirements. The results of the study indicate that the majority of V/STOL requirements can be defined by modifications to the helicopter and/or airplane requirements by appropriate definition of reference speeds. Areas where a requirement is included but where the information is felt to be inadequate to establish a firm quantitative requirement include the following: Control power and damping relationships about all axes for various sizes and types of aircraft; control power, sensitivity, d-amping and response for height control; dynamic longitudinal and dynamic lateral- directional stability in the transition region, including emergency operation; hovering steadiness; acceleration and deceleration in transition; descent rates and flight-path angles in steep approaches, and thrust margin for approach.

Book excerpt: This AGARDograph contains eight papers presented at the 24th AGARD Flight Mechanics Panel Meeting, Ames Research Center, California, USA, in February 1964. Three major aspects of simulation are dealt with. First, the electro-mechanical-optical systems forming the simulation hardware and the associated computing facilities; second, examples of simulation research applied to aircraft problems; and, third, examples of simulation research applied to spacecraft problems. A discussion of the simulation research problem from a human engineering standpoint precedes the hardware, aircraft and spacecraft sections. (Author).

This book was released on 1974 with total page 60 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A simulator study of STOL airworthiness criteria was conducted using a model of an augmentor wing transport. This study covered the approach, flare and landing, go-around, and takeoff phases of flight. The two volumes of this report document the results of that investigation. Volume One summarizes the results and discusses possible implications with regard to airworthiness criteria. The results provide a data base for future STOL airworthiness requirements and a preliminary indication of potential problem areas. The results are also compared to the results from an earlier simulation of the Breguet 941S. Where possible, airworthiness criteria are proposed for consideration.

This book was released on 1973 with total page 34 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A real-time, fixed-base simulation study has been conducted to determine the curved, descending approach paths (within passenger-comfort limits) that would be acceptable to pilots, the flight-director-system logic requirements for curved-flight-path guidance, and the paths which can be flown within proposed microwave landing system (MLS) coverage angles. Two STOL aircraft configurations were used in the study. Generally, no differences in the results between the two STOL configurations were found. The investigation showed that paths with a 1828.8 meter turn radius and a 1828.8 meter final-approach distance were acceptable without winds and with winds up to at least 15 knots for airspeeds from 75 to 100 knots. The altitude at roll-out from the final turn determined which final-approach distances were acceptable. Pilots preferred to have an initial straight leg of about 1 n. mi. after MLS guidance acquisition before turn intercept. The size of the azimuth coverage angle necessary to meet passenger and pilot criteria depends on the size of the turn angle: plus or minus 60 deg was adequate to cover all paths execpt ones with a 180 deg turn.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of the study is to define the simulation characteristics required to establish the simulator as a reliable and valid tool in the development of V/STOL aircraft and helicopters. A flight simulator employing the point light source principle to generate a visual display was used in these studies. Previous studies of a jet-lift V/STOL aircraft in this simulator uncovered a pilot-vehicle performance deficiency during lateral maneuvers, resulting in a nausea reaction which limited pilot participation. In the present investigation, human motion perception was studied, and solutions to this pilot-vehicle performance deficiency were evolved by the use of a moving base. The results demonstrated that effective simulation is possible when certain constraints are observed. The best constraints of the drive mechanism were determined experimentally and were compared with those implied from physiological concepts of human motion perception. A simulation validation rationale was also developed to assist the pilot in his evaluations. An example of this is described together with a discussion of some limitaions. (Author).
