Book excerpt: How authoritarian and racist discourse functions A classic book that analyzes and defines media appeals specific to American pro-fascist and anti-Semite agitators of the 1940s, such as the application of psychosocial manipulation for political ends. The book details psychological deceits that idealogues or authoritarians commonly used. The techniques are grouped under the headings "Discontent", "The Opponent", "The Movement" and "The Leader". The authors demonstrate repetitive patterns commonly utilized, such as turning unfocused social discontent towards a targeted enemy. The agitator positions himself as a unifying presence: he is the ideal, the only leader capable of freeing his audience from the perceived enemy. Yet, as the authors demonstrate, he is a shallow person who creates social or racial disharmony, thereby reinforcing that his leadership is needed. The authors believed fascist tendencies in America were at an early stage in the 1940s, but warned a time might come when Americans could and would be "susceptible to ... [the] psychological manipulation" of a rabble rouser. A book once again relevant in the Trump era, as made clear by Alberto Toscano's new introduction.

Book Synopsis Liberal Christianity and Women's Global Activism by : Amanda Izzo
Download or read book Liberal Christianity and Women's Global Activism written by Amanda Izzo and published by Rutgers University Press. This book was released on 2018-01-30 with total page 287 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Religiously influenced social movements tend to be characterized as products of the conservative turn in Protestant and Catholic life in the latter part of the twentieth century, with women's mobilizations centering on defense of the “traditional” family. In Liberal Christianity and Women’s Global Activism, Amanda L. Izzo argues that, contrary to this view, liberal wings of Christian churches have remained an instrumental presence in U.S. and transnational politics. Women have been at the forefront of such efforts. Focusing on the histories of two highly influential groups, the Young Women’s Christian Association of the USA, an interdenominational Protestant organization, and the Maryknoll Sisters, a Roman Catholic religious order, Izzo offers new perspectives on the contributions of these women to transnational social movements, women’s history, and religious studies, as she traces the connections between turn-of-the-century Christian women’s reform culture and liberal and left-wing religious social movements of the 1960s and 1970s. Izzo suggests that shared ethical, theological, and institutional underpinnings can transcend denominational divides, and that strategies for social change often associated with secular feminism have ties to spiritually inspired social movements.

Book Synopsis American Opinion and the Russian Alliance, 1939-1945 by : Ralph B. Levering
Download or read book American Opinion and the Russian Alliance, 1939-1945 written by Ralph B. Levering and published by UNC Press Books. This book was released on 2017-10-10 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this analysis of the years of greatest American friendship with the Soviet Union, Levering comes to two conclusions. First, cosmopolitan, educated Americans of all classes were much more likely to change their negative attitudes of 1939 to positive ones by 1943 than were the provincial and poorly educated. Second, governmental leaders and the media, whether conservative or liberal, did not prepare the public for the probable realities of postwar international politics. Originally published in 1976.
