Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book describes the thermodynamics, fluid dynamics, and working principle of the Ranque Hilsch Vortex Tube. Although vortex tubes have been around for a long time, different explications of their fundamental physics and operation can be found in literature and on the internet. This volume investigates the working principle based on thermodynamics and fluid dynamics. It provides full explication of these parameters in one single work along with results of new investigations not published elsewhere. In addition, the book features a wealth of illustrations on various aspects of the vortex tube that make it easy to read and understand.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book discusses the physical mechanisms that drive counterflows, examining how they emerge, develop, become double and multiple counterflows and comprise both global and local circulations. Counterflows play an important role in nature and technology. A natural example is the Gulf Stream and the opposite flow in the ocean depths. Technological applications include hydrocyclones, vortex tubes and vortex combustors. These elongated counterflows are wildly turbulent but survive intense mixing, a seeming paradox. Local counterflows, whose spatial extent is small compared with that of surrounding flows, occur behind bluff bodies and in swirling streams. The latter are often referred to as vortex breakdown bubbles, which occur in tornadoes and above delta wings. Most scale counterflows are cosmic bipolar jets. Most miniature counterflows occur in capillary menisci of electrosprays and fuel atomisers.

The various chapters have been written by specialists from North America, Europe and Asia, making for unsurpassed depth and breadth of coverage. Topics addressed include fundamental vortex flows (mixing layer vortices, vortex rings, wake vortices, vortex stability, etc.), industrial and environmental vortex flows (aero-propulsion system vortices, vortex-structure interaction, atmospheric vortices, computational methods with vortices, etc.), and multiphase vortex flows (free-surface effects, vortex cavitation, and bubble and particle interactions with vortices). The book can also be recommended as an advanced graduate-level supplementary textbook. The first nine chapters of the book are suitable for a one-term course; chapters 10--19 form the basis for a second one-term course.

In this spirit, the volume brings together lecture notes from leading computational physicists in quite disparate areas of research interest. The resulting collection of essays should be a valuable resource in an area where there are few standard textbooks at the present time. The volume is made up of lecture notes and introductory articles representative of the Summer School on Computational Physics which was held at the Australian National University in 1996. Several of the authors are world-renowned for their contributions to this new — and rapidly evolving — area, and this volume will be a useful supplement to textbooks at the graduate, advanced undergraduate, and professional levels.

Book excerpt: Primarily intended for postgraduate students and researchers in the fields of condensed matter science, chemical physics and material science, who plan to use the muon spin rotation, relaxation amd resonance (#uSR) techniques, this book combines for the first time a detailed discussion of the physical information contained in the measured polarisation functions with real-life examples taken from the literature. It is divided in three main parts. The first part presents some typical results of the application of #uSR and explains the basic principles involved. The second part is the core of this book. It presents a comprehensive discussion of the measured polarisation functions. In the third part we analyse in four chapters selected examples taken from the following fields: diffusion properties of muon and muonium, magnetism, superconductivity, and muonium centres in materials. The book is completed by an epilogue and eight appendices.
