But suddenly? you're compelled to stand up. So is everyone else around you. And now you're walking along with them into the ocean. Stop! you want to scream. Body, please - just stop! But your body refuses to listen. Not even when the waves crash over your head, and the water fills your lungs? All over Los Angeles, people are doing inexplicable things. Random strangers come together to commit bizarre acts of violence and self-destruction, from Santa Monica to the 101 to a posh Beverly Hills mall. The city is in chaos, and no one seems to have any answers. Except?Well, except for a crackpot professor on You Tube, a grieving mother hellbent on revenge, a depressed doctor adrift on the freeways, a homeless vet with a pistol, and a naked man with amnesia. Somehow, these random strangers are the only thing standing between us and the complete breakdown of society. And in this war, every casualty is a civilian?

Cloud's family is tragically killed when a misguided attempt to blow out a vortex lands one of the fragments right on his house. Devastated by the loss of his family, Cloud takes a leave of absence from the Radiation Lab where he works studying the vortices. As he drives he is struck with an idea for "blowing out" a vortex. It is slightly technical (Smith explains it so it can be easily followed), but the general idea is that Cloud's brain works so fast that he can calculate exactly where the center of the vortex will be at a moment in time and how big an explosive is needed, then hit it with a bomb that is set at the exact strength to actually extinguish the vortex instead of blowing it apart and making more vortices. As it continues the book tells of Cloud's new job as the universe's one and only vortex blaster. This job takes him from planet to planet where he blows out vortices, matches wits against drug dealers and gangsters, meets new life forms, and acquires a crew for his small scout ship. His adventures are many and varied, and the lifeforms he meets are strange and interesting.

Book excerpt: The Anasazi farmed in Northern Arizona, until in ancient times they disappeared without leaving a trace as to where they had gone. Being farmers and the gayety of their art led to them being thought of as a people living a Rainbow Festival-esc life in harmony with earth and man. Modern archaeology has now proven that this assessment was wrong. All is not normal in Sedona Arizona, Land of the Woo Woo People, as Allen referred to it, unless of course you happen to be from a time somewhere in the ancient past. Transported through time by an old medicine man's prayers, Allen, a wildlife photographer "who had done his forty days and forty nights in the wilderness, and gone back for another twenty years," and the strikingly beautiful, conflicted young woman Sam, who is a bonded courier for the CDC, have been transported back in time to help defeat an ancient evil. Will they find peace and belonging in this simpler world, or is it tragedy that waits for them? "I drank tobacco juice and prayed, and I saw this: I saw a man and a woman from whose hands lightning came, and this was a fearsome thing. At first I thought that they must be spirits, but then a voice told me that they were not. It was not the lightning though, which I perceived would help with our problem, but another much more powerful medicine. I could not understand its formula, but I could feel its strength." "But these people are somewhere else; through a door I cannot enter. What I request of you, upon the prayers and obedience of my ancestors, is that you would create for these strange people, a passage to our land."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Vortex!" Sims outer fold shaded red. No other single word struck the heart of a Baru-un with such force. This was the end of the world; this was death for the floater who drifted too far. Sims cursed himself for allowing the current crisis to cloud his judgment. He should never have led his party so close to the end of the world. "Vortex!" He shouted again." We've come too far. Head north!" The half dozen Baru-un in the hunting party spread the gills at the base of their baglike bodies and caught an updraft to search for a more favorable wind to take them away from the maelstrom. Suddenly, an eddy from the vortex opened just ahead and below the group threatening to catch them between countering air currents. On the gaseous planet Baru, we find the atmosphere-dwelling Baru-un, a race resembling jellyfish, facing the possible end of their world through famine, disease, an onslaught of predators, and from a growing menace that threatens the entire planet - an inescapable vortex of unimaginable proportion. Is Loru, bubble of the tribal pod, Sims, the savior spoken of in the ancient verse, or was he driven mad by the strange inner voices he hears? Into this mix, comes a Terran Space Vehicle, the TSV Jellyfish, which looks enough like a floater that they easily mistake it for one of their gods who's come to help them. But the crew of the Jellyfish has problems, too. Biologist Shamus McCain has been busted in rank and sent on a deep space mission to prevent his causing any more trouble for The Company. Only he and his Flight Stress Relief Partner, the beautiful Lt. Priscilla Barnes know the truth about the conspiracy to silence him. But someone is trying to kill them both, and whoever it is doesn't mind killing the crew in the process! Against this background, Shamus makes the greatest discovery of human history, the Baru-un are the first sentient beings discovered in over eight hundred years of space flight! Can he help the floaters survive, and can they help him?

Unique was the only way to describe him, yet alone in his single-handed battle. The appalling destructiveness of a loose atomic vortex could be cancelled out only by destroying the vortex itself. While not even the most massive and modern of electronic computers could figure out how to destroy a loose vortex, Storm Cloud could and did. To Galactic Civilization, the loose vortices were just one menace among many. It was Storm's unique brain, itself a computer with fantastic powers that enabled him to select and direct a duodecaplylatomate bomb with exactly the right energy to snuff each vortex out of existence. The day a runaway vortex exploded in his home was the day Storm Cloud became the Vortex Blaster! Edward Elmer Smith, also known as E.E. "Doc" Smith, was an early science fiction author who is sometimes referred to as the father of Space Opera. Smith's novels are generally considered to be the classic space operas, and he is sometimes called the "first nova" of twentieth century science fiction. Smith expressed a preference for inventing fictional technologies that were not strictly impossible (so far as the science of the day was aware) but highly unlikely: "the more unlikely the better" was his phrase.

Book excerpt: From the author of Axis and Vortex, the first Hugo Award-winning novel in the environmental apocalyptic Spin Trilogy... One night in October when he was ten years old, Tyler Dupree stood in his back yard and watched the stars go out. They all flared into brilliance at once, then disappeared, replaced by a flat, empty black barrier. He and his best friends, Jason and Diane Lawton, had seen what became known as the Big Blackout. It would shape their lives. The effect is worldwide. The sun is now a featureless disk--a heat source, rather than an astronomical object. The moon is gone, but tides remain. Not only have the world's artificial satellites fallen out of orbit, their recovered remains are pitted and aged, as though they'd been in space far longer than their known lifespans. As Tyler, Jason, and Diane grow up, space probe reveals a bizarre truth: The barrier is artificial, generated by huge alien artifacts. Time is passing faster outside the barrier than inside--more than a hundred million years per day on Earth. At this rate, the death throes of the sun are only about forty years in our future. Jason, now a promising young scientist, devotes his life to working against this slow-moving apocalypse. Diane throws herself into hedonism, marrying a sinister cult leader who's forged a new religion out of the fears of the masses. Earth sends terraforming machines to Mars to let the onrush of time do its work, turning the planet green. Next they send humans...and immediately get back an emissary with thousands of years of stories to tell about the settling of Mars. Then Earth's probes reveal that an identical barrier has appeared around Mars. Jason, desperate, seeds near space with self-replicating machines that will scatter copies of themselves outward from the sun--and report back on what they find. Life on Earth is about to get much, much stranger. At the Publisher's request, this title is being sold without Digital Rights Management Software (DRM) applied.
