Ein Ver such, Einblick zu gewinnen in das, was ist: so jedenfalls wird die erste berechtigte Antwort auf die Frage "Was ist Phänomenolo gie?" lauten müssen, wenn die Beschäftigung mit Phänomenolo gie und insbesondere mit Husserl-Studien nicht eben eine bloße Beschäftigung sein soll. Ist die Phänomenologie nun ein Versuch, Einblick zu gewinnen in das, was ist, so heißt das: ein Versuch neben anderen mehr, unter diesen ein eigenartiger, gegenüber diesen ein neuer. Was ist das Eigentümliche dieses neuen Versuchs, des Versuchs, Einblick zu gewinnen in das, was ist, auf dem Wege einer Phänomenologie? Was wäre der neue und eigentümliche Gesichtspunkt, von dem aus diese einen Einblick in das, was ist, zu gewinnen sucht? Husserl gibt die klare Auskunft: "Der Gesichtspunkt der Funktion ist der zentrale der Phänomenologie, die von ihm ausstrahlenden Untersuchungen umspannen so ziemlich die ganze phänomeno logische Sphäre, und schließlich treten alle phänomenologischen Analysen irgendwie in ihren Dienst als Bestandstücke oder Unter stufen";1 denn "die allergrößten Probleme sind die funktionellen Probleme, bzw. die der 'Konstitution der Bewußtseinsgegenständ lichkeiten. But how can we philosophically describe the world we live in? When Hegel attempted his systematic account of the historical world, he needed to conceive of history as rational progress to allow for such description. After the events of the twentieth century, we are rightfully doubtful about such progress. However, in the twentieth century, another German philosopher, Edmund Husserl, attempted a similar project when he realised that a philosophical account of our human experience requires attending to the historical world we live in. According to Husserl, the Western world is a world in crisis. In this book, Tanja Staehler explores how Husserl thus radicalises Hegel’s philosophy by providing an account of historical movement as open. Husserl’s phenomenology allows thinking of historical worlds in the plural, without hierarchy, determined by ethics and aesthetics. Staehler argues that, through his radicalization of Hegel’s philosophy, Husserl provides us with a historical phenomenology and a coherent concept of a culture that points to the future for phenomenology as a philosophy that provides the methodological grounding for a variety of qualitative approaches in the humanities and social sciences.

Book excerpt: In a way, the problem of the body in Husserl' s writings is relatively straightfo r ward: it is an exercise in faithful description and elaboration of a sense or mean ing, that of the "lived body," using the tools and methods of intentional analysis. What is to be described is nothing exotic, but a recognizable, familiar element of experience; further, it is not something limited to any special type of experience, but is ever-present, whether it is in the background or the center of attention. Thus the lived body is, in a way, the most mundane of topics in phenomenology, to be du1y noted as a matter of course--of course we should include the body in the analysis of lived space; of course the body is an element in the consciousness of other persons. Along with the obviousness of the task is the impression that, at least at the outset, the problem of the body does not appear to tax the resources of intentional analysis, forcing us to raise critical questions about the scope and limits of phenomenological philosophy. There is nothing extreme about the problem of the body-it demands neither that we discern structures of the end most interior of consciousness, as does the study of "internal time conscious ness," nor does it calion us to fix the sense of the normativity that constitutes the "logic" of the world by grounding it in an absolute foundation.
