Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Among the most prominent of President Bush's "thousand points of light" are volunteers who work with our nation's students. The last several decades show considerable growth in the numbers of school volunteers, with increasing participation by people from the business community, retired citizens, and college students, in addition to the traditionally active mothers of school children. Yet, we must do more to ensure the success of volunteer programs in schools. It is not enough to assume that any volunteer effort will produce results, nor is it wise to use volunteers simply because they are "free." This new volume from the National Research Council provides the first overview ever compiled of volunteer activity in U.S. public schoolsâ€"reporting on how volunteers are being used in schools, what factors make programs successful, what further research will enhance our ability to create good programs, and what directions our national policy should take. Included in this study of volunteers in public schools are the reports of the committee's site visits to 13 volunteer programs identified as "exemplary" from Boston Partners in Education to "Project Rescue" for dropout prevention in Corsicana, Texas. Each site report describes local economic conditions and their effects on education, the organization and size of the school system, and the volunteer programâ€"with details on how each program functions and what results have been achieved. This book will be immediately useful to federal, state, and local policymakers, school boards and administrators, principals and teachers, PTA members, business firms involved with schools, and, of course, managers or coordinators of volunteer activities and concerned volunteers.

This book was released on 1981 with total page 77 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is determined that the most effective volunteer service program for General Leonard Wood Army Community Hospital, Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri would be achieved by first, coordinating and integrating the carrying out of defined responsibilities of the Director of Hospital Volunteers with other administrative staff members of the hospital. Additionally, there must be developed and implemented new and innovating recruitment programs that are designed to and will attract additional volunteers of a variety of age groups. These new volunteer recruitment efforts must not only solicit and attract new volunteers from the on post military community but must also be targeted towards the largely untapped civilian community which surrounds the post. It is also concluded that for the hospital volunteer service program to be truly successful in meeting the needs of the patients and the professional staff it supports, accepted principals of management must be used in administering the program. These accepted principals of management should apply in all areas to include the 'hiring', 'training' evaluating and rewarding of volunteers.

Book excerpt: In challenging times, using volunteers gives communities the power to both increase meaningful engagement with residents and discover creative ways to meet expanding needs for local government services with limited resources. The successful implementation of volunteer programs can accomplish these dual goals, as many recent local government initiatives have shown. Yet there is an overall lack of focus on utilizing volunteerism, not only to meet service needs but also as a strategy for positive citizen engagement. Build a Successful Volunteer Program to Drive Growth and Recovery describes how communities can establish a management plan to incorporate and engage volunteers in local government.

In these tough economic times, librarians must maximize the potential of their volunteer programs. This innovative guide not only provides readers with the practical information they need to recruit, manage, and retain effective volunteers, but also demonstrates how to create a dynamic volunteer program—one that offers purposeful work and emphasizes rewards rather than rules and forms. Illustrated by best practices, this book also offers practical guidelines for evaluating the success of a volunteer program—in terms of the library's benefit, and in terms of the experience from the volunteer's point of view.
