Download or read book Voluntary Standard Systems written by Carsten Schmitz-Hoffmann and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-05-14 with total page 458 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Emerging to the forefront of sustainable production and consumption are a promising and rapidly evolving concept known as Voluntary Standard Systems (VSS). They encompass the three pillars of sustainability – social, environmental and economic aspects and consequently they can be considered as a tool, which makes sustainable development visible. Currently, they are becoming a significant element in international trade and in the promotion of sustainable development strategies, especially in the context of globalised markets and supply chains. This volume provides a comprehensive overview of the current VSS concepts: from their nature and functioning, to the future outlook for their development. It places VSS in the broader context of global development issues and challenges, including development policy and international sustainability commitments, progress towards achieving ‘green economy’ and meeting climate protection targets. The volume contains also a representative selection of case studies which demonstrate their wide range of application in different sectors of the economy.

Book Synopsis Reflecting on Sustainability Standards by : United Nations Publications
Download or read book Reflecting on Sustainability Standards written by United Nations Publications and published by . This book was released on 2022 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper summarizes the Voluntary Sustainability Standards' (VSS) Academic Advisory Council Roundtables. The roundtables aimed to foster the debate on the possibilities and limitations of sustainability standards as tools to environmental, social and economic sustainability. They were jointly organized by the United Nations Forum on Sustainability Standards (UNFSS) and EVIDENSIA, in collaboration with the KU Leuven Center for Global Governance. This paper summarizes the discussions and outcomes of the three roundtable discussions. It brings different perspectives on VSS together which can inform and contribute to a comprehensive understanding of VSS effectiveness through GVCs. Through this paper, the "effectiveness" of VSS is defined along multiple dimensions, all of which are covered and assessed. A first dimension, goal-attainment effectiveness, focuses on the impact of VSS on a range of social, economic and environmental indicators. A second dimension, process effectiveness, analyses the degree to which VSS are adopted by economic operators and the drivers for adoption. A third dimension, constitutive effectiveness, focuses on the degree to which VSS change the overall approach of actors involved in the policy process towards sustainability, i.e., the degree to which their theories of change are used more widely. VSS role on international trade is also debated and discussed.

Book excerpt: Provides an assessment of the international forest regime, in reponse to calls from many quarters, including the UN Intergovernmental Forum on Forests (IFF) and the World Commission on Forests and Sustainable Development, as well as several NGOs. The focus is mainly on action taken by countries at the global level, in the framework of legally binding instruments and institutions. It builds on previous analyses of the international forest regime by looking beyond the legal mandates to begin exploring the actual performance of the components against their mandates. With the Intergovernmental Panel on Forests (IPF) Proposals for Action as the point for departure, the effectiveness and impact of individual legal instruments and global instutions are analyzed, as is the potential for synergy between them.
Book Synopsis Forest Conservation Under International Trade by : Qianqian Shao
Download or read book Forest Conservation Under International Trade written by Qianqian Shao and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 48 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper studies a politically determined forest conservation policy in two different standard trade models and builds on Eerola (2004). In the first model the government's forest conservation policy is influenced by an environmental lobby and an industrial lobby. The economy is open and the forest conservation policy is influenced by trade. I show that if the monopoly, which represents the wood processing industry lobby, imports round wood from abroad at a low production cost, conservation policy will be stricter than if there is no import. In the second model, there are two identical countries and oligopolistic rivalry between firms give rise to reciprocal dumping of final wood products. In this case the effect of international trade on conservation policy is ambiguous. The effect is still ambiguous when there is a foreign export subsidy. The reason for the ambiguity is that there are opposing marginal effects of conservation on consumer surplus and profit under trade compared to autarky.

Book Synopsis Corporate Social Responsibility and the State by : Jane Lister
Download or read book Corporate Social Responsibility and the State written by Jane Lister and published by UBC Press. This book was released on 2012-01-01 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Public concern about worsening global environmental and social conditions has spurred corporate participation in voluntary corporate social responsibility (CSR) programs. Such efforts are promising, but CSR participation has unfolded unevenly across the globe, leading to skepticism about the efficacy of CSR efforts, and to increased pressure on governments to get involved. Corporate Social Responsibility and the State examines CSR governance through the lens of forest certification in Canada, the US, and Sweden. Drawing on more than one hundred interviews with experts, Lister offers revealing new information on CSR governance, ultimately demonstrating the importance of voluntary CSR as a supplement to rather than a substitute for strong state regulation. One of the first studies to directly address the role of the public sector in CSR, this book provides much-needed theoretical and practical guidance for understanding a vital new governance approach to effective social and environmental stewardship.
