Through the use of frank and detailed case studies, this book reveals the teaching aims and methods adopted by teachers, the issues they face in making their work effective, and the experiences of their pupils in learning design and technology. Extensive first hand evidence of classroon experience is provided by the teachers. The collection describes how action research can be done. It then provides practical examples of teachers introducing changes in the curriculum, in their teaching and in their use of evidence in monitoring teaching, as a result of this kind of research. Student teachers, teachers, parents and curriculum managers will all benefit from the insights offered by this wealth of practical accounts.

Book excerpt: In 2007, the Department for Children, Schools and Families commissioned Sir Peter Williams to undertake an independent review of the quality of primary mathematics teaching and his report was published in June 2008. This report evaluates, in particular: raising attainment and progress in mathematics and narrowing achievement gaps between certain pupils and their peers; and the delivery and effectiveness of the Primary National Strategy's resources and interventions and their impact on pupil and school performance. It was found that bringing greater structure and consistency to the way primary mathematics is taught, the Strategy initially helped to improve test results at Key Stage 2. Since 2000, however, attainment has levelled off. It is too early to tell if the 2007 revisions to the Strategy will deliver the step change required. The report makes recommendations on this basis.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How should schools deal with religions in matters of curriculum, procedure and policy? As Western society becomes increasingly multicultural in character, schools must reassess the provision of religious education and look at how they might adapt in order to accommodate students' diverse experiences of plurality. This book offers a critical view of approaches to the treatment of different religions in contemporary education, in order to devise approaches to teaching and learning, and to formulate policies and procedures that are fair and just to all. Beginning with a contextual overview of the religious, social and cultural changes of the past fifty years, the book goes on to illuminate and assess six different responses to the challenges posed by religious plurality in schools. Conclusions are drawn from the various positions explored in this book, identifying what the character of religious education should be, how it should be taught and addressing the issues raised for policy, practice and research. Rethinking Religious Education and Plurality argues for a plural approach to education and will be a valuable resource for students and researchers studying courses in religious education as well as teachers, education advisers and policy makers.
