Book excerpt: This book is a search for the promises of public education and the places where these are broken by critics feeding at the academic and professional trough. This book is a venture in critical auto-ethnography. Exploring critique through this ethnographic technique has allowed me to bring stories to the reader that work to illuminate the personal nature of educational ethics. It works to fill the gap in education critique where self-examination is missing. It is a cultural study of five different educational environments. Research in cultural studies attempts to account for cultural objects under conditions constrained by power and defined by contestation, conflict, and change. Cultural Studies grapples with the volatility of cultural happenings. Throwing Voices emphasizes self-reflexivity, an awareness that scholars and their scholarship are themselves caught up in the social currents and in the global circulation of meanings being studied. In taking up questions from this perspective, cultural studies both draws on and develops key strands of contemporary cultural theory: semiotics, deconstruction and poststructuralism, dialogics, subaltern and postcolonial studies. The field also draws on and develops a number of innovative methodologies: autoethnography, blurred genres of writing, and other new forms of critical research. I pay homage to satirist Lenny Bruce, and it has earned me a one-way ticket to scholarly palookaville. I had actually, not virtually transgressed, in a conference forum where virtual radicalism routinely trumps reality. I sold cars and write about the intersection of values in education and this pinnacle of American commerce. Here is also a chronicle of time spent as evaluator in a small Native American school, with an effort to draw attention to the world of socialclass, yet catalogue my own complicity in the evaluation game. And here I present my decisions as a state education department bureaucrat, set against the moral universe of the Chicago poetry slam. Finally, this is work to find the truth in a critical race theory, and hopes for solidarity in art, in jazz, and in the world of New Orleans music. I attempt to follow the breadcrumbs back through a career to find the source of compassion for working people and their children, and potential solidarity through a clearer more honest language than the language of higher education and administration.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Listening to the Beat of the Bomb" UPK author Charles Wolfe discusses his work and his new book Country Music Goes to War in the NEW YORK TIMES. While Toby Keith suggests that Americans should unite in support of the president, the Dixie Chicks assert their right to criticize the current administration and its military pursuits. Country songs about war are nearly as old as the genre itself, and the first gold record in country music went to the 1942 war song "There's a Star Spangled Banner Waving Somewhere" by Elton Britt. The essays in Country Music Goes to War demonstrate that country musicians' engagement with significant political and military issues is not strictly a twenty-first-century phenomenon. The contributors examine the output of country musicians responding to America's large-scale confrontation in recent history: World War II, the Korean War, Vietnam, the cold war, September 11, and both conflicts in the Persian Gulf. They address the ways in which country songs and artists have energized public discourse, captured hearts, and inspired millions of minds. Charles K. Wolfe, professor of English and folklore at Middle Tennessee State University, is the author of numerous books and articles on music. James E. Akenson, professor of curriculum and instruction at Tennessee Technological University, is the founder of the International Country Music Conference. Together they have edited the collections The Women of Country Music, Country Music Annual 2000, Country Music Annual 2001, and Country Music Annual 2002.

Book excerpt: Voices: 14 + 1 Artist Heroines Speak Their Creative Journeys shares the bold stories of how 15 female artists from around the globe became who they were born to be: artists. Author Vicki Todd interviewed artists from Australia, Canada, England, France, New Zealand, Thailand, and the US, and asked each one the same eight questions loosely based on Joseph Campbells Heros Journey. The Voices artists include painters acrylic, mixed media, oil, watercolor a decorative plaster artisan, a hand-weaver, a screen-printer, a sculptor, and a textile maker. Although the details of the stories differ, common themes bubble up: connection to a greater force to co-create the work, importance of an art tribe, perseverance to do the work through uncertainties, influence of the seasons, nature as inspiration, and the belief that its never too late or impossible to follow your passion. Explore the winding Yellow Brick Roads of these creative souls as they describe how they claimed their callings of being artists, as well as the obstacles theyve overcome along the way. They offer you a common thread of Oneness, motivation to walk your own path, and tons of practical and spiritual advice.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Walton Jones, David Wohl and Faye Greenberg Musical Comedy8m, 4fThe long-awaited sequel to the popular The 1940's Radio Hour. It's Christmas Eve, 1943, and the Feddington Players are now broadcasting from a hole-in-the-wall studio in Newark, NJ, and set to present their contemporary "take" on Dickens's A Christmas Carol. Whether it's the noisy plumbing, missed cues, electrical blackouts, or the over-the-top theatrics of veteran actor, but radio novice, William St. Claire, this radio show is an entertaining excursion into the mayhem and madness of a live radio show. St. Claire's escalating foibles and acting missteps propel the show to a simultaneously comedic and heart-wrenching dramatic climax: St. Claire has an on-air breakdown, and begins to connect his own life with that of the classic Dickens tale. In order to "save the show," the company improvises an ending to Charles Dickens' classic as a film noir mystery, featuring a hardboiled detective, a femme fatale, and an absurd rescue of Tiny Tim (and the Lindbergh baby) from the clutches of a Hitler-esque villain named Rudolf! High School Musical lyricist Faye Greenberg and composer David Wohl have written four delightful period songs for the Feddington Players, and swing arrangements of many Christmas standards. Seamlessly combining drama and comedy, heartbreak and hope, The 1940's Radio Christmas Carol will sing its way into your heart. If you enjoyed 1940's Radio Hour, step back in time once again with the Feddington Players, and get into the holiday spirit with The 1940's Radio Christmas Carol. "A reading that transforms Charles Dickens's classic into a gumshoe mystery...far above the usual holiday offerings." -Stacy Nick, Coloradoan.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Through excerpts from the earliest English language newspapers in Hong Kong, accompanied by Solomon Bard's insightful comments, Voices From the Past provides unique glimpses into Hong Kong's history. Illustrated with interesting photographs, chiefly from the Hong Kong Museum of History's photographic library, the pages bring Hong Kong's colonial past vividly to life. The newspaper excerpts, in chronological order, are faithful to the original text, reproducing its quaint prose and spelling and even occasional errors. Focusing mainly on Hong Kong, the excerpts also touch on Macao, mainland China and the rest of the world. They reflect the changes over the years in language, style of writing, even in humour. Of special interest are the public responses to the many inventions which today we take for granted, such as electric lighting, the motor car, or the first attempts at flying. Most importantly, they reveal the gradual changes in Hong Kong's colonial attitudes as these slowly adjust to the new contemporary values and social and political changes.
