Book excerpt: Despite frequent and extensive publications on Islam, very few Americans, indeed very few non-Muslims, truly understand the faith or the more than one billion adherents who live it. This set presents the diversity and richness of Islam, filling in the blanks and expanding our knowledge and understanding. Portraying Muslims in all their humanity and diversity balances the images that have bombarded society and presents the reader with a fuller and more accurate picture of the Islamic faith and what it means to live as a Muslim—in Muslim communities, and as part of a broader tapestry of pluralism in the nations of the world. What does it mean to share Muslim concerns? To experience Muslim spirituality? What is the difference between Sunni and Shiite sects? Why do Muslims pray so frequently? What is the reality of Muslim marriage and gender relations? What is the meaning of jihad and martyrdom to a practicing Muslim? What role do the arts and humanities play in modern Muslim life? How are Islamic children raised? These questions and others are answered in these volumes, which bring together Muslim voices from around the world, including men and women, scholars and laypersons, fundamentalists and progressives, and others from various cultural, political, and Islamic backgrounds. Personal experiences and poetry are included to illustrate the many different expressions of Islam.

Book excerpt: The Open Access version of this book, available at www.taylorfrancis.com/books/9781472453983, has been made available under a Creative Commons Attribution-Non Commercial-No Derivative 4.0 license. Experiences of hearing the voice of God (or angels, demons, or other spiritual beings) have generally been understood either as religious experiences or else as a feature of mental illness. Some critics of traditional religious faith have dismissed the visions and voices attributed to biblical characters and saints as evidence of mental disorder. However, it is now known that many ordinary people, with no other evidence of mental disorder, also hear voices and that these voices not infrequently include spiritual or religious content. Psychological and interdisciplinary research has shed a revealing light on these experiences in recent years, so that we now know much more about the phenomenon of "hearing voices" than ever before. The present work considers biblical, historical, and scientific accounts of spiritual and mystical experiences of voice hearing in the Christian tradition in order to explore how some voices may be understood theologically as revelatory. It is proposed that in the incarnation, Christian faith finds both an understanding of what it is to be fully human (a theological anthropology), and God’s perfect self-disclosure (revelation). Within such an understanding, revelatory voices represent a key point of interpersonal encounter between human beings and God.

Book excerpt: The Quran says, "Wherever you turn, there is the face of God," and, it tells us, "He is with you wherever you are." Muhammad remarked that spiritual virtue is to be found in serving God as if you see him, for, even if you do not see him, he sees you. The understanding that God is always present has animated the personal piety of Muslims from earliest times. These essays by well-known scholars and Sufi teachers as well as excerpts from classical Islamic literature suggest the great variety of routes that Muslims have followed to reach the vision of the Divine in all that exists. Book excerpt: 2015 Israel Fishman Non-Fiction Award presented by the Stonewall Books Awards of the American Library Association Muhsin is one of the organizers of Al-Fitra Foundation, a South African support group for lesbian, transgender, and gay Muslims. Islam and homosexuality are seen by many as deeply incompatible. This, according to Muhsin, is why he had to act. “I realized that I’m not alone—these people are going through the very same things that I’m going through. But I’ve managed, because of my in-depth relationship with God, to reconcile the two. I was completely comfortable saying to the world that I’m gay and I’m Muslim. I wanted to help other people to get there. So that’s how I became an activist.” Living Out Islam documents the rarely-heard voices of Muslims who live in secular democratic countries and who are gay, lesbian, and transgender. It weaves original interviews with Muslim activists into a compelling composite picture which showcases the importance of the solidarity of support groups in the effort to change social relationships and achieve justice. This nascent movement is not about being “out” as opposed to being “in the closet.” Rather, as the voices of these activists demonstrate, it is about finding ways to live out Islam with dignity and integrity, reconciling their sexuality and gender with their faith and reclaiming Islam as their own.

Book excerpt: Wisdom of Mankind Description: Is Islam a cult or a religion? Does Islam promote violence and chauvinism? Is it opposed to co-existence and diversity? These days, especially after 9/11, there are hundreds of books with screaming titles, each purporting to present the "truth" about Islam and Muslims. The readers are told in those books that Muslims want to kill them, because the Qur'an says so; Muslims want to impose shari'ah in the West and impose Jizyah (a tax imposed on able-bodied non-Muslim men of military age) upon them; Islam - is not a religion of peace; Islam does not promote sound moral values; Islam debases women; Islam is incompatible with both democratic pluralism and science; Islam will take away all their rights and privileges, etc. In short, these books confirm every fear one may entertain about Islam. How true are such assertions and myths? In this compiled work by drawing from reliable Islamic sources and traditions, dating back to the time of Prophet of Islam, Habib Siddiqui dispels many of the myths about Islam that pervade the Western media and the minds of the public at large in the West. He shows that Islam is the religion of all the Prophets of God since the time of Adam and that it is a living and breathing religion that is practiced in vast territories of Asia and Africa by nearly a quarter of the world population whose daily practices and understanding of their faith are at odds with those of the nihilists and misguided extremists who in recent years have terrorized some western cities. Habib Siddiqui's book - Wisdom of Mankind - is a timely one when suspicions about Islam and Muslims run high, and zealots on the both sides of the religious fault-line are seemingly bent upon bringing about civilizations wars. By reading this book, the reader can make up his or her mind about what Islam preaches and what is expected from a Muslim when he lives within a society as a citizen, as a parent, sibling or child. This type of books, more than the tomes written by scholars of Islam, will help to enlighten the general public about the true beliefs and original spirit of Islam.

Book excerpt: In recent years, Islamic fundamentalist, revolutionary, and jihadist movements have overshadowed more moderate and reformist voices and trends within Islam. This compelling volume introduces the current generation of reformist thinkers and activists, the intellectual traditions they carry on, and the reasons for the failure of reformist movements to sustain broad support in the Islamic world today. Richly detailed regionally focused chapters cover Iran, the Arab East, the Maghreb, South Asia, Indonesia, Malaysia, Turkey, Europe, and North America. The editor's introductory chapter traces the roots of reformist thinking both in Islamic tradition and as a response to the challenge of modernity for Muslims struggling to reconcile the requirements of modernization with their cultural and religious values. The concluding chapter identifies commonalities, comparisons, and trends in the modernizing movements.

Book excerpt: The Muslimah Speaks: Her Voice, Her Spirit Volume I is an anthology collection featuring original poetry by Muslim women writers and accentuated by excerpts of the hadith of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) and scriptures of the Holy Quran and Holy Bible. Too often than not, it is instilled in women from a very young age through the interactions that they have with others and by the images that they are bombarded with daily, that their voices are not as important as men's. It is our intention to highlight the voices of Muslim women while showcasing the connection between them and the faithful women of the Abrahamic scriptures and among the female companions of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH).

Book excerpt: Sacred poetry from twelve mystics and saints, rendered brilliantly by Daniel Ladinsky, beloved interpreter of verses by the fourteenth-century Persian poet Hafiz One of 6 Books Oprah Loves to Give as Gifts During the Holidays “All kinds of beautiful poetry.” –Hoda Kotb In this luminous collection, Daniel Ladinsky—best known for his bestselling interpretations of the great Sufi poet Hafiz—brings together the timeless work of twelve of the world’s finest spiritual writers, six from the East and six from the West. Once again, Ladinsky reveals his talent for creating profound and playful renditions of classic poems for a modern audience. Rumi’s joyous, ecstatic love poems; St. Francis’s loving observations of nature through the eyes of Catholicism; Kabir’s wild, freeing humor that synthesizes Hindu, Muslim, and Christian beliefs; St. Teresa’s sensual verse; and the mystical, healing words of Sufi poet Hafiz—these along with inspiring works by Rabia, Meister Eckhart, St. Thomas Aquinas, Mira, St. Catherine of Siena, St. Teresa of Avila, St. John of the Cross, and Tukaram are all “love poems by God” from writers considered “conduits of the divine.” Together, they form a spiritual treasure to cherish always.
