Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Voice From the Australian Bush Having, at different times of my life, so far forgotten myself as to perpetrate rhymes on various subjects, I like others afflicted with the same incurable malady, became desirous that I should not be the only sufferer, so, inflicted a small edition on my friends, the people of South Australia; and the critics of the said Province having been very merciful, (i was going to say just and merciful) and the public most easy to please, why, the book sold, and I (being reinforced by a friend who understands punctuation, and is a severe, though kindly critic) furbished up some of the old poems, and made some new ones, and I now offer the same to be properly cut up by the critics, if it will give them any satisfaction to do so and, thereafter to be perused with all sorts of sensations, by more unsophisticated readers who desire to see things described as they are, and to understand what they read. As what is pleasant and nutritious pabulum to one, is poison to another, I have ranged from the sublime to the ridiculous, so as to have a plum for all who investigate my pudding. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An innovator in contemporary thought on economic and political development looks here at decline rather than growth. Albert O. Hirschman makes a basic distinction between alternative ways of reacting to deterioration in business firms and, in general, to dissatisfaction with organizations: one, “exit,” is for the member to quit the organization or for the customer to switch to the competing product, and the other, “voice,” is for members or customers to agitate and exert influence for change “from within.” The efficiency of the competitive mechanism, with its total reliance on exit, is questioned for certain important situations. As exit often undercuts voice while being unable to counteract decline, loyalty is seen in the function of retarding exit and of permitting voice to play its proper role. The interplay of the three concepts turns out to illuminate a wide range of economic, social, and political phenomena. As the author states in the preface, “having found my own unifying way of looking at issues as diverse as competition and the two-party system, divorce and the American character, black power and the failure of ‘unhappy’ top officials to resign over Vietnam, I decided to let myself go a little.”

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Children of Wild Australia All the time I have been writing this little book I have been wishing I could gather you all around me and take you with me to some of the places in far away Australia where I myself have seen the little black children at their play. You would understand so much better all I have tried to say. It is a bright sunny land where those children live, but in many ways a far less pleasant land to live in than our own. The country often grows very parched and bare, the grass dies, the rivers begin to dry up, and the poor little children of the wilderness have great difficulty in getting food. Then perhaps a great storm comes and a great quantity of rain falls. The rivers fill up and the grass begins to grow again, but myriads of flies follow and they get into the children's eyes and perhaps blind some of them, and the mosquitoes come and bite them and give them fevers sometimes. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Awful Australian There has been so much adulation lately of Australia, Australian institutions, and the Aus tralian people by writers with axes to grind and English politicians with party ends to serve that the people of the Commonwealth have come to believe that they are the salt of the earth, and that their country is Personally, I am impatient of such and I think it is time somebody called upon the self-satisfied Aus tralians to show cause why a little more humility and a little less arrogance were not more seemly. With a view to restoring an apparently lost sense of proportion to the press and public of the country, I have written the following pages. If in telling the truth I shame file Australian this book will achieve its object. Should a bowl of indigna tion be provoked, then will the condition of affairs be proved worse than my pen has power to depict, and nothing will be left but to declare Australia past redemption. This is the case for the prosecu tion. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We live in dangerous times when educational policies and practices are debated largely in terms of how they fit with the needs of the free market. This volume is a collection of writing by teacher-educators that draws on their unique biographies, experiences and perspectives to denounce these misguided norms. It explores what it means—practically and intellectually—to teach for social justice in conservative times. In a globalised world where the power of capital holds sway, the purposes of social institutions such as universities and schools is being refashioned in ways that are markedly instrumental and technicist in nature. The consequence is that teachers’ work is increasingly constrained by regimes of control such as standardised testing, accountability, transparency, and national curricula. In the meantime, large numbers of students and teachers are disengaging physically, emotionally and intellectually from learning. The contributors to this edited volume present both a powerful critique of these developments and a counter-hegemonic vision of teacher education founded on the principles and values of social justice, democracy and critical inquiry. Teacher education, they argue, involves a commitment to critical intellectual work that subjects some deeply entrenched assumptions, beliefs, habits, routines and practices to closer scrutiny. The contributing authors expose how ideology and power operate in seemingly blameless, rational ways to perpetuate social hierarchies based on class, gender, sexuality, race and culture.
