Book excerpt: The important role of CAD in VLSI is clearly noticeable in this volume, with many contributions spanning the wide area from system design, silicon compilers, layout programs and design rules, to test strategies and verification programs. Before widespread industrial application of VLSI is possible, the underlying CAD systems must first become economically viable. This consideration, and its relation to the topics covered, will be of interest and importance to the academic community, computer scientists and to electrical engineers.

This handbook readily answers specific questions and presents a systematic compilation of information regarding the VLSI technology. There are a total of 52 chapters in this book and are grouped according to the fields of design, materials and processes, and examples of specific system applications. Some of the chapters under fields of design are design automation for integrated circuits and computer tools for integrated circuit design. For the materials and processes, there are many chapters that discuss this aspect. Some of them are manufacturing process technology for metal-oxide semiconductor (MOS) VLSI; MOS VLSI circuit technology; and facilities for VLSI circuit fabrication. Other concepts and materials discussed in the book are the use of silicon material in different processes of VLSI, nitrides, silicides, metallization, and plasma. This handbook is very useful to students of engineering and physics. Also, researchers (in physics and chemistry of materials and processes), device designers, and system designers can also benefit from this book.

Book excerpt: VLSI Design Environments investigates design alternatives such as object oriented data modelling. The difficulty of automating chip architecture designs is caused by the complexity of the problem. The explosion of design decions make a heuristic approach necessary. PLAYOUT aims at the solution of system problems based on hierarchy, top-down planning, silicon complier presentations, advances in encoding logic synthesis and a microarchitecre and logic optimization system. PLAYOUT supports the physical design from entering the structure of digital systems to the generation of the mask. The concept for autonomous tools with a clear interface to the network description and the simple interface to the graphics is presented. This enables the designer to have a great influence on the configuration of the placement of the schematic diagram. Substantial progress is being made in behavioural and logic synthesis, both of which depend upon specifications.

Book excerpt: The summer school on VLSf GAD Tools and Applications was held from July 21 through August 1, 1986 at Beatenberg in the beautiful Bernese Oberland in Switzerland. The meeting was given under the auspices of IFIP WG 10. 6 VLSI, and it was sponsored by the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich, Switzerland. Eighty-one professionals were invited to participate in the summer school, including 18 lecturers. The 81 participants came from the following countries: Australia (1), Denmark (1), Federal Republic of Germany (12), France (3), Italy (4), Norway (1), South Korea (1), Sweden (5), United Kingdom (1), United States of America (13), and Switzerland (39). Our goal in the planning for the summer school was to introduce the audience into the realities of CAD tools and their applications to VLSI design. This book contains articles by all 18 invited speakers that lectured at the summer school. The reader should realize that it was not intended to publish a textbook. However, the chapters in this book are more or less self-contained treatments of the particular subjects. Chapters 1 and 2 give a broad introduction to VLSI Design. Simulation tools and their algorithmic foundations are treated in Chapters 3 to 5 and 17. Chapters 6 to 9 provide an excellent treatment of modern layout tools. The use of CAD tools and trends in the design of 32-bit microprocessors are the topics of Chapters 10 through 16. Important aspects in VLSI testing and testing strategies are given in Chapters 18 and 19.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the last few years, computers have evolved from pure number crunching machines to "intelligent" problem solving tools. Increasing effort has been spent on the investigation of new approaches and the application of solutions to real world problems. In this way, exciting new techniques have evolved providing support for an increasing number of technical and economical aspects. Applications range from the design and development of ultra highly integrated circuits to totally new man-machine interfaces, from software engineering tools to fault diagnosis systems, from decision support to even the analysis of unemployment. Following a first joint workshop on Advanced Information Processing held in July 1988 at the Institute for Problems of Informatics of the USSR Academy of Sciences (IPIAN) at Moscow, this was the second time that scientists and researchers from the USSR Academy of Sciences and Siemens AG, Corporate Research and Development, exchanged results and discussed recent advances in the field of applied computer sciences. Initiated by Prof. Dr. I. Mizin, Corresponding Member of the USSR Academy of Sciences and Director of IPIAN, and Prof. Dr. H. Schwartzel, Vice President of the Siemens AG and Head of the Applied Computer Science & Software Department, a joint symposium was arranged at the USSR Academy of Sciences in Moscow on June 5th and 6th 1990. The meetings on Information Processing and Software and Systems Design Automation provided a basis both for presentations of ongoing research and for discussions about specific problems.

Book excerpt: This report describes the partially completed correctness proof of the Viper 'block model'. Viper [7,8,9,11,23] is a microprocessor designed by W. J. Cullyer, C. Pygott and J. Kershaw at the Royal Signals and Radar Establishment in Malvern, England, (henceforth 'RSRE') for use in safety-critical applications such as civil aviation and nuclear power plant control. It is currently finding uses in areas such as the de ployment of weapons from tactical aircraft. To support safety-critical applications, Viper has a particulary simple design about which it is relatively easy to reason using current techniques and models. The designers, who deserve much credit for the promotion of formal methods, intended from the start that Viper be formally verified. Their idea was to model Viper in a sequence of decreasingly abstract levels, each of which concentrated on some aspect ofthe design, such as the flow ofcontrol, the processingofinstructions, and so on. That is, each model would be a specification of the next (less abstract) model, and an implementation of the previous model (if any). The verification effort would then be simplified by being structured according to the sequence of abstraction levels. These models (or levels) of description were characterized by the design team. The first two levels, and part of the third, were written by them in a logical language amenable to reasoning and proof.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The theme of this new textbook is the practical element of electronic circuit design. Dr O'Dell, whilst recognising that theoretical knowledge is essential, has drawn from his many years of teaching experience to produce a book which emphasises learning by doing throughout. However, there is more to circuit design than a good theoretical foundation coupled to design itself. Where do new circuit ideas come from? This is the topic of the first chapter, and the discussion is maintained throughout the following eight chapters which deal with high and low frequency small signal circuits, opto-electronic circuits, digital circuits, oscillators, translinear circuits, and power amplifiers. In each chapter, one or more experimental circuits are described in detail for the reader to construct, a total of thirteen project exercises in all. The final chapter draws some conclusions about the fundamental problem of design in the light of the circuits that have been dealt with in the book. The book is intended for use alongside a foundation text on the theoretical basis of electronic circuit design. It is written not only for undergraduate students of electronic engineering but also for the far wider range of reader in the hard or soft sciences, in industry or in education, who have access to a simple electronics laboratory.
