Book excerpt: Word Study in Montaigne's Essais Modern readers in need of a precise understanding both of the changes in the French language over the last 400 years since the Essais was written and of the idiosyncracies of Montaigne's usage will appreciate these articles exploring the nuances and fluctuations in the meaning of many of Montaigne's words. These critical studies of Montaigne's vocabulary and its shifting contexts will aid in understanding how Montaigne's choice of words reflects his ability to take elements from his background of wide-ranging, life-long classical reading and blend them with his own original, unflagging curiosity and speculation about matters relating to contemporary life.

Download or read book Santé et société à Montpellier à la fin du Moyen Âge written by Geneviève Dumas and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2014-11-27 with total page 605 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the social, institutional and cultural setting of medical practices in the medieval town of Montpellier which boasted one of the first universities of the middle ages and a famous school of medicine. Some of its most celebrated masters and their medical works have been thoroughly studied but few of them try to put these in context with a thriving urban community of merchants and craftsmen that were at the core of the city council. Their concurrent efforts will endow Montpellier of a rich health care system featuring not only the university masters but also the city’s barber-surgeons and apothecaries. Their collective fate is revealed here in an integrated picture of health and society in the middle ages.
Book Synopsis Bonjour !
Download or read book Bonjour ! Je viens mourir chez vous written by François Lefort and published by Bouquineo. This book was released on 2010-05-27 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.
Book Synopsis Secrets d'un père insaisissable by : Caroll Lesage
Download or read book Secrets d'un père insaisissable written by Caroll Lesage and published by FriesenPress. This book was released on 2023-07-05 with total page 151 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book Synopsis The Anatomy of Despondency by : Jaap Harskamp
Download or read book The Anatomy of Despondency written by Jaap Harskamp and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2011-02-21 with total page 887 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Socio-cultural criticism is the continuous assessment and evaluation of developments within democratic society and hence a vital ingredient of democracy itself. Departing from the French Revolution, this study focuses upon a tradition of European criticism. On the whole, critics accepted that technological advance was irreversible but they opposed the assumption that this implied general progress. Instead, they stressed the negatives: class conflict, erosion of tradition, mechanization of life, fragmentation of society, loss of cultural differentiation. The approach is exclusively text-orientated. The result is a multi-coloured mosaic depicting an image of what has moved, confused or dismayed the European mind over a period of a century and a half. The intensity of concern has shaped our contemporary thought, awareness and outlook.
