Book Synopsis Suffragette Fascists by : Simon Webb
Download or read book Suffragette Fascists written by Simon Webb and published by Pen and Sword History. This book was released on 2020-06-30 with total page 229 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A look at the leader and members of the militant Women’s Social and Political Union and their contribution to the rise of fascism during the 1930s. Emmeline Pankhurst is seen today as a valiant champion of democracy, but in the 1930s certain prominent former suffragettes were comparing her to Hitler and Mussolini. It was suggested that Mrs. Pankhurst and her Women’s Social and Political Union could be viewed as a proto-fascist movement; an idea likely to strike the modern reader as grotesque. Yet the WSPU certainly had much in common with the fascist parties that emerged after the end of the First World War. The group was financed by wealthy and aristocratic backers, and terrorism, in the form of bombing and arson, was widely used against working-class men and women. This, together with the rampant anti-Semitism and ambivalent attitude to democracy, all indicate that there was more to the suffragettes than we now realize. Few people today, for example, know that Emmeline Pankhurst was an advocate of ethnic cleansing and the use of concentration camps, nor that her daughter was imprisoned during the Second World War for pro-Nazi activities. This helps to explain how former suffragettes came to hold such important positions in the British Union of Fascists in the years before the Second World War. After all, the ideology and structure of Oswald Mosley’s fascist party was so eerily similar to that of Emmeline Pankhurst’s Women’s Social and Political Union. “Fascinating . . . The book looks into the new leaders of the WSPU, their thoughts, attitudes and beliefs, the blackshirts, before the war, during and after.” —UK Historian

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This second volume of papers dealing with scientific and ethical aspects of animal welfare covers a variety of topics and areas of inves tigation. It will be of particular interest to those readers seeking more insight into such subjects as farm animal welfare and humane husbandry systems; animal experimentation, especially in the field of psychology; and pain in animals, notably its recognition and alleviation. Several of our selections deal with very specific subjects that are germane to animal welfare: the use of T-61 for euthanizing cats and dogs, a new humane method of stunning for livestock and poultry, an innovative alternative to killing animals for rabies diagnosis, alterna tives to aversive procedures in teaching experimental psychology, and the need for improved theoretical modeling in animal experimentation and research design. Following the precedent set in the first volume of Advances in Animal Welfare Science, we have included several papers dealing with people's attitudes toward animals. These papers range from a consider ation of cultural influences and veterinary ethics to an examination of anthropomorphism, to a discussion of the linkage between the environ mental politics and perceptions of the Green Movement and animal welfare and rights. We wish to express our gratitude to the Manuscript Review Commit tee for the excellent work they have done and to the twenty contributors to this volume which we believe will do much to advance the science of animal welfare, and the well-being of animals under man's dominion.

Book Synopsis A History of the Imperial Cancer Research Fund, 1902-1986 by : Joan Austoker
Download or read book A History of the Imperial Cancer Research Fund, 1902-1986 written by Joan Austoker and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 1988 with total page 416 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the spectacular progress that has been made in cancer research during the last 80 years, describing the way discoveries have been made and asking questions about accountability, decision making, and the contribution of past achievement to policymaking. The focus is on the experience of the Imperial Cancer Research Fund, one of the leading international research centers and one of Britain's major medical charities. The author takes a broad perspective and provides a comparative framework by discussing the changing relationship between the ICRF and the medical profession, government, and other charities, notably the Cancer Research Campaign. The resulting analysis of intellectual developments and scientific polices involves a unique overview of malignant disease management, therapeutic and preventative strategies, and the evolution of cancer services in Britain.
