Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A flow visualisation cell was used together with image capture and image processing systems to observe the convergent flows of polymer melts in steady state single screw extrusion through a slit die. This technique provided useful information for assessment of any vortex and entry flow patterns for different flow conditions and various polymer types. Entry flow patterns are characterised in terms of natural entry profile, vortex boundary profile, location of vortex centre and detachment length. Stress birefringence provides principal stress difference measurements, which can be obtained from the digital image analysis of isochromatic fringes. The assessment of stress distribution in terms of centre line principal stress difference (PSD) or the extensional stress along the centre line of a slit, shear stress and first normal stress difference are obtained from the digitised isochromatic and isoclinic fringes together with stress optical coefficients via the stress optical law. Stress distributions can be combined with flow velocity measurements for the full entry flow. Average strain rate fields for the polymer melts flow at various flow conditions and different polymer types are therefore obtained. This technique also provides the assessment of apparent extensional viscosity from the ratio of extensional stress (...) and extensional strain rate (...). Two different approaches of the extensional viscosity assessments: particle tracking and digitised entry profile methods are established. Fully developed flow regions in terms of entrance and exit length for polymer melt flows of various flow conditions are determined using gradients of centre line extensional stress (or PSD) and the parallel patterns of isochromatic fringes in a downstrewn slit.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents the main results obtained by different laboratories involved in the research group Rheology for polymer melt processing which is associated with French universities, schools of engineering, and the CNRS (Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique - France). The group comprises some 15 research laboratories of varied disciplines (chemistry, physics, material sciences, mechanics, mathematics), but with a common challenge viz. to enhance the understanding of the relationships between macromolecular species, their rheology and their processing. Some crucial issues of polymer science have been addressed: correlation of viscoelastic macroscopic bulk property measurements and models, slip at the wall, extrusion defects, correlation between numerical flow simulations and experiments. Features of the book: • The book is unique in that it allows one to grasp the key issues in polymer rheology and processing at once through a series of detailed state-of-the-art contributions, which were previously scattered throughout the literature. • Each paper was reviewed by experts and the book editors and some coordination was established in order to achieve a readable and easy access style. • Papers have been grouped in sections covering successively: Molecular dynamics, Constitutive equations and numerical modelling, Simple and complex flows. • Each paper can be read independently. Since the book is intended as an introduction to the main topics in polymer processing, it will be of interest to graduate students as well as to scientists in academic and industrial laboratories.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In many cases rheological measurements are carried out in the simplest of geometries, but the interpretation involved in obtaining the rheological parameters of the test fluids from these measurements is surprisingly complex. The purpose of this book is to emphasise the points on which most workers in the field agree, and to let the authors deal with the contentious points according to their own beliefs and experience. This work represents a summary of the current thought on rheological meas urement by experts in the various techniques. When making measurements and obtaining from them parameters that describe the flow behaviour of the test fluids, it is essential that the experimentalist understands the underlying theory and shortcomings of the measurement technique, that he is aware of the likely microstructure of the fluid, and that from this he can appreciate how the fluid and the measuring system will interact with each other. It is this interaction that gives both the required rheological parameters of the fluids and the artefacts that confuse the issue. This book covers the main rheological measurement techniques from capillary, slit and stretching flows to rotational and oscillatory rheometry in various geometries including sliding plate measurements. These topics are backed up by chapters on more practical aspects, such as commercial instruments, and on computer control and data acquisition. The chapters deal with the basic methods, how the measurements are taken, and what assumptions and interpretations are made to obtain valid data on the test fluids.

Objective of this work is to capture a selection in a simulation environment, for a certain material, starting from executing experiments on. This means aspects of experimental investigations, modeling and special numerical methods used to create a simulation environment will be highlighted. Because this involves many fields, works covering all aspects are rare1. It is intended to contribute such a work by the publication of this thesis.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Modern day high-performance computers are making available to 21st-century scientists solutions to rheological flow problems of ever-increasing complexity. Computational rheology is a fast-moving subject — problems which only 10 years ago were intractable, such as 3D transient flows of polymeric liquids, non-isothermal non-Newtonian flows or flows of highly elastic liquids through complex geometries, are now being tackled owing to the availability of parallel computers, adaptive methods and advances in constitutive modelling.Computational Rheology traces the development of numerical methods for non-Newtonian flows from the late 1960's to the present day. It begins with broad coverage of non-Newtonian fluids, including their mathematical modelling and analysis, before specific computational techniques are discussed. The application of these techniques to some important rheological flow problems of academic and industrial interest is then treated in a detailed and up-to-date exposition. Finally, the reader is kept abreast of topics at the cutting edge of research in computational applied mathematics, such as adaptivity and stochastic partial differential equations. All the topics in this book are dealt with from an elementary level and this makes the text suitable for advanced undergraduate and graduate students, as well as experienced researchers from both the academic and industrial communities.
