Vertigo or vestibular disorders have become a common handicap across the globe, which poses a great burden on health care resources. Vertigo is not a disease entity per se, but rather a leading symptom of many etiologically different diseases. These conditions include dysfunction of the vestibular system, both peripheral (inner ear, vestibular nerve) and central (brainstem, cerebellum), functional dizziness, and diseases of other causes, including blood pressure regulation disorders, such as orthostatic dizziness, and adverse drug reactions. Previous studies demonstrated that vestibular disorders might be a modifiable condition and a possible target for secondary prevention of cognitive impairment due to aging, dementia, social isolation, late-life depression, frailty, and increased risk of mortality. To date, the assessment strategy for patients with vertigo or vestibular disorders has not been fully developed. Vertigo or vestibular disorders are mechanistically complicated, highly prevalent, difficult to differentiate from other conditions, and may lead to vestibular or mental disability. Further understanding of the etiology, pathophysiology, diagnosis and treatment of peripheral, central, and functional vestibular vertigo syndromes as well as their management through this research program or project will benefit patients and their families, thus reducing the economic burden on society at large. The editors welcome any types of manuscripts --- Original Research, Opinions, Review, and Systematic Review concerning vertigo/vestibular disorders. Book excerpt: Eye movements are a vital part of our interaction with the world. They play a pivotal role in perception, cognition, and education. Research in this field is now proceeding at a considerable pace and casting new light on how the eyes move and what information we can derive during the frequentand brief periods of fixation. However, the origins of this work are less well known, even though much of our knowledge was derived from this research with far more primitive equipment. This book is unique in tracing the history of eye movement research. It shows how great strides were made in this area before modern recording devices were available, especially in the measurement of nystagmus. When photographic techniques were adapted to measure discontinuous eye movements, fromabout 1900, many of the issues that are now basic to modern research were then investigated. One of the earliest cognitive tasks examined was reading, and it remains in the vanguard of contemporary research. Modern researchers in this field will be astonished at the subtleties of these early experimental studies and the ingenuity of interpretations that were advanced one and even two centuries ago. Though physicians often carried out the original eye movement research, later on it was pursued bypsychologists - it is within contemporary neuroscience that we find these two strands reunited. Anyone interested in the origins of psychology and neuroscience will find much to stimulate and surprise them in this valuable new work.

Meantime, dizziness, and vertigo can increase the risk of falls by affecting balance and gait. Previous studies have shown that falls are one of the major problems in the elderly and are considered one of the "geriatric giants" (mobility, falls, continuity, and improved intelligence/memory), leading to a significant contribution of mobility. In addition, dizziness has also been correlated with cognitive dysfunction. Patients often complain of mental fogginess and difficulties with memory and attention. Bigelow et al. (2016) found that patients with vestibular disorders had a four-fold increase in cognitive impairment, with 12% reporting activity limitation due to memory problems or confusion.
