Book excerpt: This manual is primarily a ready reference to assist the ground observer in aircraft recognition and identification. It provides information on current operational aircraft of the United States and foreign countries, which may be observed worldwide in the combat area. It can be used as source material for personnel conducting unit training in visual aircraft recognition. The procedures in this publication apply throughout the US Army. The data is based on the best information available at the time of publication; however, it is not all-inclusive because of some classification guidelines. This publication, by nature, has a built-in time lag, and some aircraft may still be under development or classified at the time of writing, but may be fielded or unclassified at, or after, publication.

Book excerpt: Vision is the dominant sense used by pilots and visual misperception has been identified as the primary contributing factor in numerous aviation mishaps, resulting in hundreds of fatalities and major resource loss. Despite physiological limitations for sensing and perceiving their aviation environment, pilots can often make the required visual judgments with a high degree of accuracy and precision. At the same time, however, visual illusions and misjudgments have been cited as the probable cause of numerous aviation accidents, and in spite of technological and instructional efforts to remedy some of the problems associated with visual perception in aviation, mishaps of this type continue to occur. Clearly, understanding the role of visual perception in aviation is key to improving pilot performance and reducing aviation mishaps. This book is the first dedicated to the role of visual perception in aviation, and it provides a comprehensive, single-source document encompassing all aspects of aviation visual perception. Thus, this book includes the foundations of visual and vestibular sensation and perception; how visual perceptual abilities are assessed in pilots; the pilot's perspective of visual flying; a summary of human factors research on the visual guidance of flying; examples of specific visual and vestibular illusions and misperceptions; mishap analyses from military, commercial and general aviation; and, finally, how this knowledge is being used to better understand visual perception in aviation's next generation. Aviation Visual Perception: Research, Misperception and Mishaps is intended to be used for instruction in academia, as a resource for human factors researchers, design engineers, and for instruction and training in the pilot community.

Book excerpt: Training Circular TC 3-01.80 Visual Aircraft Recognition May 2017 There is little discussion about the depth and breadth of the automation of weapons and weapon systems in the United States (US) Military. Soldiers rely heavily on the use of these systems to employ their will on the battlefield and defeat the enemy. There are times when Soldiers must utilize training that is solely dependent on their knowledge and skill, without the use of automation. VACR is one of these skills. Soldiers utilize VACR to identify a possible enemy target that could cause grave danger to friendly forces. Once identified, the Soldier must act accordingly. Soldiers must be knowledgeable in the identification of all types of aerial platforms ranging from fixed, tilt, and rotary wing aircraft and unmanned aircraft, in order to protect friendly forces and to prevent fratricide. There have been many arguments through the years that the military does not need VACR, because of the advancement of technology that identifies friendly or enemy aerial platforms. VACR is a basic skill that every Soldier should know. Soldiers cannot blindly depend on automation to do their jobs for them. VACR give Soldiers the necessary skills to perform at the highest level in defending friendly forces from enemy aerial attack. Chapter 1 discusses the need for visual aircraft recognition Chapter 2 describes Factors Affecting VACR Chapter 3 show Aircraft identifying features Chapter 4 describes VACR training program Appendix A discuss ground attack, close air support and fighter-bomber aircraft. Appendix B discusses air superiority and interceptor aircraft. Appendix C discusses bomber aircraft. Appendix D discusses cargo and transport aircraft. Appendix E discusses utility aircraft. Appendix F discusses unmanned aircraft platforms. Appendix G discusses rotary wing aircraft.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Visual aircraft recognition (VACR) is a critical skill for U.S. Army Short Range Air Defense (SHORAD) soldiers. It is the most reliable means of identifying aircraft, however VACR skills are not easy to teach or learn, and once learned they are highly degradable. The numerous training aids that exist to help units train soldiers require qualified instructors who are not always available. Also, the varying degrees of proficiency among soldiers make group training less than ideal. In an attempt to alleviate the problems in most VASC training programs, an intelligent tutor system has been developed to teach VACR in accordance with the Wings, Engine, Fuselage, Tail (WEFT) cognitive model. The Aircraft Recognition Tutor is a graphics based, object oriented instructional program that teaches, reviews and tests VACR skills at a level appropriate to the student. The tutor adaptively coaches the student from the novice level, through the intermediate level, to the expert level. The tutor was provided to two U.S. Army Air Defense Battalions for testing and evaluation. The six month implementation, testing, and evaluation process demonstrated that, using existing technology in Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence, useful training tools could be developed quickly and inexpensively for deployment on existing computers in field. Keywords: Theses, Intelligent computer aided instruction. (KR).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Several printed prototype programs for training visual aircraft recognition were developed and compared experimentally. One program produced and average score of 95% on a printed recognition test (the next closest group test had more than twice as many errors). The program also tended to take the least time to administer (about 15 minutes per aircraft). The training was in three phases: Study of Multi-Image Cards (each showing several views of one aircraft, listing distinctive features); Study of Paired Comparison cards (each showing two or three aircraft that are likely to be confused; Study of Flash Cards (each showing one view of one aircraft--10 different cards for each aircraft). After each phase, tests with printed imagery were administered. The program should be feasible and effective for routine training. (Author).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Applied training research measured the effectiveness of training visual aircraft recognition (VAR), evaluated the transfer of training from static to dynamic imagery testing; and evaluated VAR saturation and retention levels in an Army unit training environment. It was found that, although the overall average gains in training were the same for the two training methods, lower aptitude men learned more under lock-stepped instruction, and higher aptitude men gained more under self-paced instruction. The VAR skills developed from training with static images did transfer to a dynamic test situation involving model aircraft which moved. Men from four batteries participated in a program in which 20, 40, 60, and 80 aircraft had to be learned in successive blocks. All the test personnel from two batteries achieved the final goal of 80 aircraft. None of the members of one of the other batteries achieved the program objectives. Variation in achievement of the batteries was attributed to differences in training management and practice.
