Book excerpt: Excerpt from Visits to America The third point is that the book is not the work of an observer who has made a hurried tour through the country, visited the more conspicuous places designated in the common guide-books, and then presumes to write impressions of the people and country; but it is the conscientious opinion of a woman of matured intelligence, who has seen much of human nature, and has visited America three times before taking up her pen to note her inferences from what has been seen and heard. Each time Miss F aithfull came here, she came with an earnest pur pose to study our society, our women, our industries, that she might learn something of use in her special work. She was each time among us more in the character of the learner than the critic, and it will be seen that her statements from beginning to end are entirely free from any tincture of pedantry or ego tism. She speaks candidly, frankly, awarding cordial approval wherever she has found matters to her lik ing, and expressing as decided dissent or reproof, yet always in kindly terms, regarding matters that she deems it expedient to censure. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Little Tour in America "Hope told a flattering tale" that, having written a prefatory chapter to this book, no further prologue would be required; but I have just received an intimation from headquarters: "No Preface. Please send at once." I hate Prefaces. The writer always seems to magnify or to minimize his merits; and the reader resents his self-conceit, or infers from his humility "that his deserts are small." Who cares to know what an author thinks about himself or his books? The fond mother does not love her small boy the less because he has an appalling squint; and she describes as "a lovely auburn" his hair of brilliant red. And why does he, the author, always assure us that he has done his best? Of course he has. He knows that the critic is waiting to crown him with laurel or with foolscap, that the public are waiting to nod in approbation or in slumber, and that the publisher is waiting to send him a condolence or a cheque. They do not desire information about his modus operandi, they want to see the opus. They are not anxious to be introduced to the cook, but to taste his dishes; and no ornamental Menu nor devout Grace before Meals will alter the organization of their palates or improve the flavour of their food. Let us omit the Preface. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Two Lectures on a Short Visit to America Fourtkly and Laslly I am not all sure that it was the wrong time of the year - that is, for me; it being equally the same to me (as far as stomach and appetite and pulse and nerve are concerned) whether it blows a gale of wind or a gentle zephyr; whether the sea sweeps fore and afttor laps feebly and lazily a few inches up the ships side, so long as I can manage to hold on. While I can certainly bear heat much better than cold, and if I had to choose between going in mid winter or mid summer my suffrage would be given for the former; for, amongst other reasons this special one, that I would rather run the Mame of being bitten by American frost in winter; than submit to the certain horror and indignity of being bitten by American mosquitoes in the summer. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Through America: Or Nine Months in the United States AS the ground which is covered in the following pages has been often described before, I feel that some apology is due from me for submitting to the public a book of travel which will take the reader through scenes with the general aspects of which he is, probably, already sufficiently familiar. But America, with its vast natural resources, and with a population at once ingenious and enterprising, is, necessarily, in a continual state of development and change. For the traveller, therefore, who visits, even, the beaten tracks of such a country, there will always be plenty of fresh material to collect, and abundant opportunity for the enunciation of new views of old subjects; and I venture to hope that in the endeavour to present a truthful account of actual ex periences of travel in the United States, I may, perhaps, have gathered a few facts which will prove to be something more than mere personal reminiscences, and be interesting and valuable to the public at large. Book excerpt: Excerpt from What I Saw in America Travel ought to combine amusement with instruc tion; but most travellers are so much amused that they refuse to be instructed. I do not blame them for being amused it is perfectly natural to be amused at a Dutchman for being Dutch or a Chinaman for being Chinese. Where they are wrong is that they take their own amusement seriously. They base on it their serious ideas of international instruction. It was said that the Englishman takes his pleasures sadly; and the pleasure of despising foreigners is one which he takes most sadly of all. He comes to scoff and does not remain to pray, but rather to excommunicate. Hence in international relations there is far too little laughing, and far too much sneering. But I believe that there is a better way which largely consists of laughter a form of friendship between nations which is actually founded on differences. To hint at some such better way is the only excuse of this book. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Six Months in America It cannot escape observation that the author of the following pages has been led, or has fallen into some errors, both of fact and inference. These we have not thought it necessary in all cases to notice. Every candid reader will pronounce such errors inevitable, for from what class in any country is perfectly accurate information to be obtained? And in a new country of such extent as America, how must this difficulty be increased! The book is given unaltered, and a few notes added where they appeared necessary to correct an erroneous impression. Candid accounts of ourselves are always acceptable from intelligent travellers, and in this class we do not hesitate to place Barrister Vigne. Not a few, however, will smile at his allusions to the "influence of a court," and when he argues the cause of the law of primogeniture, many will think his eloquence thrown away. In politics his views may not always chime in with the opinions of the reader, but taken altogether, the "Six Months in America," may be admitted to be of a superior cast, when compared with the mass of books from the pens of British tourists who have visited us, and paid their expenses by publishing their crudities and abuse. Book excerpt: Excerpt from What to See in America In this compact, single volume, with its 500 illustrations, each state in the Union has a chapter, and each of the cities of New York and Washington has an additional chapter. The book is concerned with the human interest of our coun try in nature, history, industry, literature, legend, and biography. It is intended for travelers who visit the places of interest in person, and also for those other travelers whom chance or necessity keeps at home, but who travel far and wide on the wings of fancy. The information is much concentrated, but not to the extent of sacrificing readableness. Under each state is included such things as the first settlement, the capital, the largest city, the highest point, and facts of general interest concerning its past and present that add to the traveler's zest in visiting it. My own wanderings have taken me to every state in the Union, and have furnished much of value in preparing the book, but I have gathered additional material from many sources. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The American Scene The following pages duly explain themselves, I judge, as to the Author's point of view and his relation to his subject; but I prefix this word on the chance of any suspected or perceived failure of such references. My visit to America had been the first possible to me for nearly a quarter of a century, and I had before my last previous one, brief and distant to memory, spent other years in continuous absence; so that I was to return with much of the freshness of eye, outward and inward, which, with the further contribution of a state of desire, is commonly held a precious agent of perception. I felt no doubt, I confess, of my great advantage on that score since if I had had time to become almost as fresh as an inquiring stranger, I had not on the other hand had enough to cease to be, or at least to feel, as acute as an initiated native. I made no scruple of my conviction that I should understand and should care better and more than the most earnest of visitors, and yet that I should vibrate with more curiosity - on the extent of ground, that is, on which I might aspire to intimate intelligence at all than the pilgrim with the longest list of questions, the sharpest appetite for explanations and the largest exposure to mistakes.
