Book excerpt: This volume was first published by Inter-Disciplinary Press in 2013. Fashion-Wise offers an interdisciplinary and transcultural approach to the phenomenon of fashion, investigating its historical, socio-political and artistic aspects. The chapters collected in the volume discuss fashion in the contexts of personal and national identity, gender politics, phenomenology, psychoanalysis, history, consumer culture, ethics, education, performance studies, authenticity, disability studies, sport and celebrity culture. The authors included in this seven-part volume not only comment on the ways in which we have been ‘consuming’ fashion across centuries and cultures but also explore its relevance as a critical subject in cultural studies.

Download or read book Rei Kawakubo written by Rex Butler and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2022-12-15 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Japanese fashion designer Rei Kawakubo of Comme des Garçons is undoubtedly one of the world's major fashion designers. In 2017 she was the second living designer to ever be given a retrospective at the renowned Costume Institute of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. Her work exerts an extraordinary influence over succeeding generations of designers and is a major point of reference for all those wishing to explore the place of fashion in contemporary culture. The 14 essays in this collection, written by eminent fashion theorists from around the world, ask what is the relationship of Kawakubo's work to art, philosophy and architecture, and ultimately illustrate how Kawakubo's creative output allows us to understand the very notion of fashion itself.

Download or read book Visionaire # 33 written by Stephen Gan and published by Visionaire Pub. This book was released on 2000 with total page 21 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Artist and longtime Visionaire contributor Francois Berthoud outdid himself when he interpreted twenty of our favorite new looks from the fall/winter 2000-2001 collections, which were all about excess and sensory overload. Elements such as pop-ups and cutouts represented a journey back to our roots, but whereas in the past we could only afford to use one or two of these techniques in an entire issue, this time each page received multiple treatments. Flocking, foil stamping, sculpt-embossing, and honeycomb extension gave the feeling in print of fur over metallic lace over sequins over a dress with leather appliques over patterned stockings. Our collaborator Fendi's tactile ready-to-wear collection that season was a key source of inspiration. The unbound illustrations were wrapped in a wearable pony-skin cache-col and housed in a brushed-gold metal box. Highlights include designs by John Galliano, Alexander McQueen, Viktor and Rolf, Junya Watanabe, and Helmut Lang." -- Publisher's website.

Book Synopsis The Moral Economy by : Samuel Bowles
Download or read book The Moral Economy written by Samuel Bowles and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2016-05-28 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Should the idea of economic man—the amoral and self-interested Homo economicus—determine how we expect people to respond to monetary rewards, punishments, and other incentives? Samuel Bowles answers with a resounding “no.” Policies that follow from this paradigm, he shows, may “crowd out” ethical and generous motives and thus backfire. But incentives per se are not really the culprit. Bowles shows that crowding out occurs when the message conveyed by fines and rewards is that self-interest is expected, that the employer thinks the workforce is lazy, or that the citizen cannot otherwise be trusted to contribute to the public good. Using historical and recent case studies as well as behavioral experiments, Bowles shows how well-designed incentives can crowd in the civic motives on which good governance depends.
