One major reason for this is the intelligent cooperation between the sensory and the motor system, which is facilitated by development of motor skills that help to shape visual information that is relevant to a specific vision task. This dynamic interaction of sensory-motor components in biological systems can be a great inspiration to how artificial systems, such as robots could use their visual mechanism to interacts with their world. In this thesis, we seek to explore an approach to active visioninspired by biological evolution, which does not use a predefined framework or assumptions, but develops motor strategies for a given task through progressive adaptation of the evolutionary method. Thus, this kind of approach will give freedom to artificial systems in the discovery of eye movement strategies that may be useful to biological systems but are not known to us. The contributions of this thesis are: 1. We used this type of active vision system for more complex images taken from the camera of the iCub robot.2. We demonstrated the effectiveness of the active vision system in a more realistic setting for 3D object categorisation using the humanoid robot (iCub) platform.3. We extended the applicability of the system to the 3D environment for indoor and outdoor environment classification task using the iCub platform.4. We extended the system with pre-processing using Uniform Local Binary Patterns [1] in both 2D and 3D environment categorisation tasks.5. We further extended the system with pre-processing using Histogram of Oriented Gradients [2] for classification tasks in the 2D and 3D environments.Analysis of the results from the system shows that the model was able to complete discrimination tasks through: (i) exploiting sensory-motor coordination to experience sensory stimuli that facilitates the classification tasks; (ii) an indication of integration of perceptual information over time.

Since then computer vision has made remarkable progress: various rangefinders have become available, new methods have been developed to obtain 3D informa tion, knowledge representation frameworks have been proposed, geometric models which were developed in CAD/CAM have been used for computer vision, and so on. The progress in computer vision technology has made it possible to understand more complex 3 D scenes. There is an increasing demand for 3D computer vision. In factories, for example, automatic assembly and inspection can be realized with fewer con straints than conventional ones which employ two-dimensional computer vision.

In seven psychophysical experiments, we investigated the use of depth cues in the segmentation of the visual scene, detection of object trajectories and the perception of self-motion. Chapters 1 & 2 provide the motivation and background for this work. In Chapter 3, we determine the behavioral and computational implications of the disparity tuning properties of neurons in the middle temporal area (MT), an area critical for visual motion processing, on disparity segmentation, motion transparency detection and center-surround modulation. We compared psychophysical performance to an ideal observer model and showed that when presented with multiple motion components with small differences in direction and binocular disparity, the visual system implements a smoothness constraint, leading to the grouping of similar features into a single percept. Two biologically constrained models, one based on the population statistics of MT neurons and one using actual neuronal recordings (courtesy of G. DeAngelis), demonstrate that these neurons can segment motion using binocular disparity, and that through dynamic read-out the function of the network varies with the task demands. In Chapters 4 and 5, we investigate the perception of motion in depth via angular expansion and scale change cues. First, we showed that time-to-collision estimation based on angular expansion and two-dimensional, gap closure, cues use functionally separate mechanisms. Second, we showed that scale changes--the change in spatial frequency associated with changes in relative depth--can be used for the detection of heading, but not of object motion trajectories. Results from an adaptation study and from a patient blind to radial motion support the hypothesis that scale changes are processed independently from optic flow and may constitute an alternative mechanism for the perception of self-motion. Taken together, these results demonstrate a functional specialization of depth cues during motion perception. We show that the specific depth cue used by the visual system depends on the task, and that a number of functionally separate mechanisms exist to accurately process the depth information readily available in the visual world.

To show how advanced 3D vision provides new perspectives to fulfill these needs, this paper presents an architecture and system that integrates hybrid 3D vision and VRR and reports about experiments and results. The first section discusses the advantages of virtual reality in robotics, the potential of a 3D vision system in VRR and the contribution of a knowledge database, robust control and the combination of intensity and range imaging to build such a system. Section two presents the different modules of a hybrid 3D vision architecture based on hypothesis generation and verification. Section three addresses the problem of the recognition of complex, free- form 3D objects and shows how and why the newer approaches based on geometric matching solve the problem. This free- form matching can be efficiently integrated in a VRR system as a hypothesis generation knowledge-based 3D vision system. In the fourth part, we introduce the hypothesis verification based on intensity images which checks object pose and texture. Finally, we show how this system has been implemented and operates in a practical VRR environment used for an assembly task.
