Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Contributions are made to finite Reynolds number, viscous/inviscid interaction theory for laminar, subsonic flow past a thin-airfoil trailing edge. In particular, an analytical/computational technique is developed for predicting high Reynolds number, attached or separated, trailing-edge and near-wake flow. The analysis is based on interacting boundary-layer theory in which the outer inviscid and the inner viscous flows are solved simultaneously to determine the complete flow past the displacement body. Inviscid solutions are based on linear airfoil theory and viscous solutions are determined by a finite difference approximation ot the boundary-layer equations cast in Levy-Lees variables. A semi-inverse viscous/inviscid iteration procedure is employed in which viscous and inviscid solutions are repeatedly determined until the inviscid pressure distribution at the displacement surface match the viscous pressure distribution.

Book excerpt: Subsonic turbulent flow past thin airfoil trailing edges is studied using a finite Reynolds number viscid/inviscid interaction model. Here, the flow in the outer or inviscid region is governed by the equations of linearized potential lflow theory, while that in the inner or viscous region is governed by Prandtl's boundary-layer equations cast in terms of Levy Lees variables. The effects of turbulence are represented using an algebraic turbulence model based on the eddy viscosity concept. The flow in the vicinity of the local strong interaction is determined by iteratively matchng the solutions in the inviscid and viscous regions using a quasi-simultaneous coupling procedure. Turbulent mean flow solutions have been obtained for a range of symmetric and asymmetric wedge shaped trailing edge geometries. Results illustrating the effects of airfoil thickness and loading on the detailed mean-flow behavior in the trailing edge/near wake region are presented. Keywords: Subsonic turbulent mean flow; Viscid/inviscid interaction; Trailing edge/near wake region; Quasi-simultaneous viscid/inviscid coupling procedure.

Book excerpt: The Second Symposium on Numerical and Physical Aspects of Aerodynamic Flows was held at California State University, Long Beach, from 17 to 20 January 1983. Forty-eight papers were presented, including Keynote Lec tures by A. M. 0. Smith and J. N. Nielsen, in ten technical sessions which were supplemented and complemented by two Open Forum Sessions, involving a further sixteen technical presentations and a Panel Discussion on the "Identification of priorities for the development of calculation methods for aerodynamic bodies. " The Symposium was attended by 120 research workers from nine countries and, as in the First Symposium, provided a basis for research workers to communicate, to assess the present status of the subject and to formulate priorities for the future. In contrast to the First Symposium, the papers and discussion were focused more clearly on the subject of flows involving the interaction between viscous and inviscid regions and the calculation of pressure, velocity and temperature characteristics as a function of geometry, angle of attack and Mach number. Rather more than half the papers were concerned with two-dimensional configurations and the remainder with wings, missiles and ships. This volume presents a selection of the papers concerned with two dimensional flows and a review article specially prepared to provide essen tial background information and link the topics of the individual papers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A general theory is presented for high Reynolds number steady boundary layer separation, with application here to the near wake region of blunt subsonic trailing edges. The theory is based on the concept of a thin viscous layer displacing and thus interacting with an inviscid flow. The governing equations are derived in a shear layer oriented coordinate system and subsequently simplified through use of Prandtl's Transposition Theorem. These are put in final form through introduction of turbulent Levy Lees type variables to minimize growth of the viscous layer in the computational domain. Solutions were first obtained for asymptotically large Reynolds number through use of Triple Deck scaling laws. A numerical algorithm was developed using an inverse viscous layer approach coupled with a direct inviscid flow solver. The method was found to be fast, stable and accurate through a comparative assessment with previously published flat plate trailing edge solutions. Blunt trailing edge separated flows were then studied providing the first such steady, high Reynolds number solutions ever produced. A numerical algorithm was also written for solving the finite Reynolds number form of the governing equations. The approach was a direct extension of the Triple Deck Solver. Good agreement has been achieved with recently published flat plate trailing edge solutions at a Reynolds number of 100,000. (Author).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The aim of this thesis is to couple an inviscid two dimensional steady transonic flow calculation with a boundary layer calculation. This interaction is especially important in transonic problems since the boundary layer has a significant effect on the inviscid portion of the flow. Here, the inviscid solution is obtained by an algorithm developed for the full potential equation by Holst and Ballhaus while the attached and separated turbulent boundary layer calculations are performed by Green's lag entrainment method. Guided by a model problem suggested by Le Balleur, a viscous-inviscid coupling algorithm is developed. Theoretical analysis indicates that it coverages rapidly for attached flows ad also performs well for separated flows. These conclusions are confirmed through a series of challenging transonic calculations involving both attached and separated flows. The coupling algorithm is remarkably stable and allows computation of coupled viscous-inviscid flows within times required to perform the inviscid calculations by themselves. (Author).
