Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Effects of viscous interaction are investigated for hypersonic flow over slender axisymmetric bodies. The entire range of interaction, from weak to strong, is considered for nose bluntness not greater than a 3/4 power law. Extensive numerical results are given for the self-similar flow over a 3/4 power law body. These results are correlated and used in a local similarity procedure for finding viscous interaction over arbitrary body shapes. Analytical expressions are derived for weak interaction on a cone and strong interaction on power law bodies. Following Dewey's approach, the local similarity procedure is simplified to a series of algebraic equations. These are solved for flow of air over a cone. Numerical results are presented for cone surface pressure, shear, heat transfer, drag and displacement thickness in all interaction regimes. The drag is in good average agreement with available experimental cone drag data. The analytical development is a unified treatment of viscous interaction effects on two-dimensional as well as axisymmetric bodies. Numerical results for wedges are included. (Author).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Unsteady pressure distributions and stability derivatives on a slender circular cone performing oscillation in pitch in viscous hypersonic flow can be determined using the method of dynamic viscous pressure interaction developed by the present author. The method takes into account the relative motion between the body surface and the boundary-layer displacement surface and can be applied to arbitrary bodies and flow conditions, provided the relevant inviscid unsteady pressure distributions and the dependence of the boundary-layer displacement on the steady flow variables are known. In the present paper, practical closed-form formulas are given for the unsteady pressure distribution and the static and dynamic pitching moment derivatives for a slender right circular cone performing low-frequency, small-amplitude oscillation in pitch around zero mean incidence and completely submerged in the weak-interaction region of laminar boundary layer. Book excerpt: An analytical formulation is presented of the problem of hypersonic viscous interaction on a very slender body of revolution with a thick boundary layer and mass transfer. Particular attention is directed to the establishment of the mathematical restrictions necessary to ensure the existence of similar solutions of the laminary boundary-layer equations for this class of problems. Yasuhara's analysis is extended to include surface mass transfer and binary mixture effects. It is shown that when the boundary-layer thickness is of the same order of magnitude as the characteristic body dimension, rigorous similarity is possible only for three-quarter-power-law bodies. This is in agreement with Yasuhara's earlier conclusions. Similar solutions to the boundary-layer growth equations exist when the transverse curvature expression is a function of the similarity variable. The criterion for the existence of similar solutions for the problem of hypersonic viscous interaction is that there must be a definite relationship between body surface shape and surface injection velocity. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A computer program is presented for calculating the various components comprising the total drag coefficient for slightly blunted slender cones. The program is applicable for either the case of a completely laminar boundary layer or where transition occurs on the cone. Weak viscous interaction effects are taken into account. Local flow properties which exist at the outer edge of the boundary layer along the cone are also computed. (Author).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Surface heat transfer and boundary layer transition measurements have been performed on a slender blunted cone at M(infinity) = 8.0. These measurements have been obtained on the conical surface with mass transfer occurring on the spherical nose cap. The free stream Reynolds number, based on nose radius, varied between 6000 and 90000. Data was obtained both at zero angle of attack and at angles as high as 14 deg, which exceeds the semi-vortex cone angle of 10 deg. The technique utilized in the determination of transition location was a thin film gauge, on the model surface, which was maintained at a constant temperature by an anemometer system. The RMS output of the film gauge was found to accurately locate the onset of boundary layer transition. A numerical analysis of film cooling in the stagnation region of a slender cone was also performed using the thin shock layer approximation. The porous region was analyzed and compared to previously obtained results using different assumptions. The downstream region, at angle of attack, utilize the porous region results as initial conditions. The computer program, however, was not successfully operated in this mode.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work has been directed toward investigations of fundamental aerothermal phenomena in hypersonic flow, with particular emphasis on viscous/inviscid interaction phenomena. The experimental studies were conducted to examine the changes in the structure at the base of a hypersonic turbulent boundary layer as it is subjected to a strong self induced pressure gradient in regions of shock wave/boundary layer interaction. The initial phase of the theoretical program was directed toward summarizing existing techniques for obtaining Navier/Stokes solutions for laminar flow over flat plates in hypersonic flow. In the experimental program, surface and flow field measurements were made to examine the detailed flow mechanics associated with turbulent boundary layer separation over a large cone flare model at Mach 11, 13, and 16 for Reynold numbers up to 100 million. Solutions have been obtained to Navier-Stokes equations for the laminar flow over the leading edge of a sharp flat plate in Mach 16 flow for highly cooled wall conditions using a modified MacCormack/Shang fully explicit formulation. To obtain a stable converged solution it was necessary to reduce the grid size close to the leading edge to the order of the mean free path, and typically 20,000 time steps were required to achieve convergence. However, once obtained, the solution was a good agreement with experiment.
