La empresa, fletar una expedición con el fin específico de difundir la tecnología para vacunar frente a la viruela, siguiendo una meticulosa planificación de las necesidades científicas y logísticas, representó un esfuerzo humano y económico notable. Lamentablemente, este hecho es poco conocido incluso entre los científicos españoles, por lo que consideramos una obligación su difusión tanto a nivel nacional como internacional. Este libro es, por tanto, la consecuencia de una ilusión. En él están puestos los esfuerzos de un grupo de investigadores en ciencias de la vida y humanidades (Rafael Fernández Muñoz, Susana Ramírez, Eduardo Páez, Catherin Mark, Luis Valenciano y Luis Enjuanes), que se reunió en torno a la figura de Francisco Xavier Balmis y la hazaña de propagar la vacuna contra la viruela por todo el mundo en los inicios del siglo XIX.
