Book excerpt: Excerpt from Virtues and Spiritual Doctrine of St. Vincent De Paul The author presupposes in his readers a general knowledge of the main facts in the life of the saint. Hence, frequent reference. Is made to the story of that life. This may prove to some an unsatisfactory feature of the work. Yet, everything in the book is complete and independent. True, for a more comprehensive understanding of the degree of virtue practised, for a deeper and more intimate feeling of the heroism of many of the acts narrated, an acquaintance with the history of the life of the Saint i's requisite. For the work is a companion to the Life. It is presumed that the major portion of those who will read it are sufficiently familiar with the name and works of the Apostle of Charity, and, therefore, that a mere mention of certain circum stances is all that is required to recall the picture in allita vividness. Or, again, it is hoped that the reading of the work will create such interest as to beget in those, to whom the life of the Saint of suffering humanity is unknown, the desire to peruse it in all its details. Book excerpt: Saint Vincent de Paul began a work of charity for men and women, the latter being the Sisters of Charity. His spiritual doctrine and method of preaching is a subject well worth studying for all sincere Catholics. Saint Vincent de Paul had his little method of bringing about conversions: "First show the reasons for loving goodness and hating evil; second, show what virtue is; third, show how it is attained." This work lays all of this out for the use of the preacher and the edification of the faithful.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life of St. Vincent De Paul The two remarkable men to whom M. Bourdoise here alludes seem to have been raised up in times of great irreligion to render extraordinary services to the Church. Jean Clement had been a Huguenot; after his conversion, he devoted himself to the teaching of Christian doctrine, and with such success that it is cal culated in one year he made on an average no less than six converts a day. His practice was to take up vosi tion near the church in which the Jesuit father eron had just been preaching; there, gathering a crowd of auditors about him, he would explain in a plain and popular way the doctrines of the Church, and enforce the arguments of the learned but somewhat severe con troversialist with a sweetness and an unction which few were able to resist. His extraordinary familiarity with the Sacred Scriptmes - for it is recorded of him that he knew nearly the whole of the Bible in French by heart - gave him great influence with the Protestants, and es' pecially with their preachers. He would first let them propose their doubts, and would then answer them with a readiness and a completeness truly marvellous in an uneducated man. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Saint Vincent De Paul He may not have been without that hankering after the ages of simple faith which besets every sensitive soul at times; yet his instinctive sagacity told him that the sun will neither stand still nor go back upon its course for all our tender longings; that God fulfils Himself in many ways; that if we would in any degree shape the world better we must begin by shaping ourselves to it as we find it. His attitude towards that new world was not one of blind hostility, but of just and even sym pathetic discrimination, of willingness to use and foster and profit by every little beginning of good ness, every little glimmer of truth. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Life of St. Vincent De Paul: Founder of the Congregation of the Mission, and of the Sisters of Charity France was, under Henry the third, in the most afflicting situation, when God who, even in his anger, is mindful of his mercies, gave to the world in a corner of the Barrens of Bordeaux a man, who, notwithstanding his humble condition, was one day to restore to the Church a portion of her ancient splendor, and to render signal service to the State. This child of benediction was born on the Tuesday after Easter, the twenty-fourth day of April 1576, in a small hamlet of the parish of Pouy, in the diocese of Acqs, towards the Pyrenees. His father was called William de Paul, and his mother, Bertrande de Moras. Their fortune was a medium between extreme necessity, and comfortable mediocrity. Piety, simplicity, and innocence of manners, were a substitute before God, for what they wanted in the eyes of men. Assiduous labor joined to a very frugal life, supplied the want of a more abundant patrimony, and afforded them the means of relieving those who were poorer than themselves. God blessed their marriage with six children, two girls and four boys. Vincent, whose life we are writing, was the third; and in a family where every thing was turned to profit, he, like his brothers, was employed in the labors of the field. Book excerpt: I N these pages St Vincent de Paul appears as one of what might be called the modern school of saints-as one of those who had realised with mind and heart the significance of the change of principle and temper introduced by the renaissance dividing the old order from the new, and inaugurating that conflict between them which men of faith believe to be directed to the saving of what is best in both, to the elimination of what is faulty, and so to their eventual reconciliation and assumption into something higher than either. He may not have been without that hankering after the ages of simple faith which besets every sensitive soul at times; yet his instinctive sagacity told him that the sun will neither stand still nor go back upon its course for all our tender longings; that God fulfils Himself in many ways; that if we would in any degree shape the world better we must begin by shaping ourselves to it as we find it. His attitude towards that new world was not one of blind hostility, but of just and even sympathetic discrimination, of willingness to use and foster and profit by every little beginning of goodness, every little glimmer of truth. It is principally as almost the originator of the modern organisation of charitable works that he is deserving of special study, and as offering therein a solution to some very difficult problems.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Manual of the Society of St. Vincent De Paul: Translated From the French This collection will thus place before the eyes of our associates, a picture of the daily occupations and life of our Conferences, recall many useful precedents and decisions, founded on past expe rience, which might otherwise be buried in the passing years. It will likewise prevent discus sions, in our meetings, which might otherwise usurp the time dedicated to the practice of charity, and show any persons, that may interest them selves in our affairs, what we have l)een, what we now are and desire ever to remain. We trust this short treatise may truly deserve the title of Manual, and prove a useful and frequent pocket companion, either for the purposes of piety, or for the study of our principles and our spirit.
