Book excerpt: When 57-year-old Edward Maria Wingfield first set foot in the soil of the New World, he was already a man who had seen a lot. He had been a lawyer, a commander of troops fighting the Imperial Spanish Army, a POW, and a Member of Parliament. He had become a fortifications expert in Ireland, and finally a businessman, helping to incorporate the first Virginia Company in 1606. But it wasn't until now, standing on the shores of this strange and hostile land in 1607, that the grizzled captain was to have his greatest adventure. In a time when no English colony had ever succeeded overseas, 13 years before the Mayflower, something unprecedented happened. The newly-formed Jamestown council, selected by the company to run the colony's affairs, actually elected a leader to govern the 105 men, boys and all the land in this part of the world. With the warships of France and Spain patrolling the seas behind, myriad warring native tribes surrounding them, and not enough food to survive, their choice of a leader was critical. The man they chose - their President - was Edward Maria Wingfield. This is his story. - Appendices include E. M. Wingfield's 1608 Discourse Of Virginia and the 1606 Virginia Company Charter.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Although the friendship between George Washington and James Madison was eclipsed in the early 1790s by the alliances of Madison with Jefferson and Washington with Hamilton, their collaboration remains central to the constitutional revolution that launched the American experiment in republican government. Washington relied heavily on Madison's advice, pen, and legislative skill, while Madison found Washington's prestige indispensable for achieving his goals for the new nation. Together, Stuart Leibiger argues, Washington and Madison struggled to conceptualize a political framework that would respond to the majority without violating minority rights. Stubbornly refusing to sacrifice either of these objectives, they cooperated in helping to build and implement a powerful, extremely republican constitution. Observing Washington and Madison in light of their special relationship, Leibiger argues against a series of misconceptions about the two men. Madison emerges as neither a strong nationalist of the Hamiltonian variety nor a political consolidationist; he did not retreat from nationalism to states' rights in the 1790s, as other historians have charged. Washington, far from being a majestic figurehead, exhibits a strong constitutional vision and firm control of his administration. By examining closely Washington and Madison's correspondence and personal visits, Leibiger shows how a marriage of political convenience between two members of the Chesapeake elite grew into a genuine companionship fostered by historical events and a mutual interest in agriculture and science. The development of their friendship, and eventual estrangement, mirrors in fascinating ways the political development of the early Republic."--Abebooks.com viewed Sept. 25, 2023.

Peter Francisco was believed to have had almost super-human strength. According to legend, George Washington said, "Without him we would have lost two crucial battles, perhaps the war, and with it our freedom." Francisco, a Portuguese immigrant, was raised outside Richmond and after hearing Patrick Henry's "Give Me Liberty or Give Me Death" speech, he joined the Virginia Colonial Militia. He was known for his battle-hardened skills, and his bravery at Brandywine, Stony Point, Camden and Guilford Courthouse led to stories of epic portions. Join authors Bobby and Sherry Norfolk as they separate fact from myth on topics ranging from pirates to redcoats to exciting acts of valor in this remarkable story of a true American hero.
