Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In her book, The Closed Hand: Images of the Japanese in Modern Peruvian Literature, Rebecca Riger Tsurumi captures the remarkable story behind the changing human landscape in Peru at the end of the nineteenth century when Japanese immigrants established what would become the second largest Japanese community in South America. She analyzes how non-Japanese Peruvian narrators unlock the unspoken attitudes and beliefs about the Japanese held by mainstream Peruvian society, as reflected in works written between 1966 and 2006. Tsurumi explores how these Peruvian literary giants, including Mario Vargas Llosa, Miguel Gutiérrez, Alfredo Bryce Echenique, Carmen Ollé, Pilar Dughi, and Mario Bellatin, invented Japanese characters whose cultural differences fascinated and confounded their creators. She compares the outsider views of these Peruvian narrators with the insider perceptions of two Japanese Peruvian poets, José Watanabe and Doris Moromisato, who tap personal experiences and memories to create images that define their identities. The book begins with a brief sociohistorical overview of Japan and Peru, describing the conditions in both nations that resulted in Japanese immigration to Peru and concluding in contemporary times. Tsurumi traces the evolution of the terms "Orient" and "Japanese/Oriental" and the depiction of Asians in Modernista poetry and in later works by Octavio Paz and Jorge Luis Borges. She analyzes the images of the Japanese portrayed in individual works of modern Peruvian narrative, comparing them with those created in Japanese Peruvian poetry. The book concludes with an appendix containing excerpts from Tsurumi's interviews and correspondence in Spanish with writers and poets in Lima and Mexico City.

It demonstrates the multiple insecurities that arise from complex interactions among rebels, criminals, and other violent non-state groups. Challenging urban biases and state-centric views, it draws on unprecedented multi-year fieldwork in the war-torn marginalized Colombian-Ecuadorian and Colombian-Venezuelan borderlands.

Book excerpt: This book is an interdisciplinary study that addresses the critical role that gender plays in the formation of national identities in Latin America that are negotiated and challenged within extreme struggles for power. This study, which traverses the national landscapes of Argentina, Cuba, Venezuela, and Guatemala and covers the time span between 1837 and 1946, is linked by the author's common strategy of employing gender codes in order to challenge overtly masculinist hegemonic political orders. One of the goals of this investigation is to explore the fissures that surface as a result of the ongoing fluctuations of gender codes, due in part to the diverse shifting of institutions of power during the late nineteenth and early twentieth century. By disturbing deleterious conceptualizations associated with femininity and masculinity, one can embark upon new and open-ended readings of these historical national texts, and appreciate the groundbreaking strides of early revolutionary Latin American writers. -- Publisher description.

Book excerpt: Background Noise introduces to the English-speaking world the poetry of Argentinian writer Saul Yurkievich, in a bilingual edition. His poetry is a play of language and ideas, with language leading the way. His longer poems are collages, full of similarities and contrasts that remain unresolved, not circumscribed by a determination to harmonize or integrate. Also important to Yurkievich are sound and rhythm. His poems are like jazz solos, spontaneously flowing in response to nothing but themselves. And therefore they are great joys to read aloud. But beneath the pleasures of Yurkievich's riffs, there is a troubling despair. There is a sense in the poems of our inability to know, to find, to get what we desire. Writing in the tradition of Huidobro, Vallejo, and the early Neruda, Yurkievich's work both celebrates and laments the world's pandemonium. The title poem begins, "tenebrous turbid turmoil turbulence," an incantation of chaos. Also included in this volume is an interview with Yurkievich and his friend, the late fiction writer Julio Cortazar, about their approaches to writing. Book jacket.

Book excerpt: A collection of essays by international authorities ranging from psychologists and doctors to economists and communication experts. Several authors analyze the economic and health costs imposed by domestic violence, documenting that domestic violence is both a serious public health issue and a severe impediment to economic development. Others examine promising approaches that have been used to combat domestic violence, including community treatment and prevention networks, telephone hotlines, judicial and police reform, anti-violence curricula in primary and secondary schools, street theatre, and creative use of the mass media. The book is based on the 1997 IDB conference, Domestic Violence in Latin America and the Caribbean: Costs, Programs and Policies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This book examines the political economy of violence in the Rio de Janeiro favela of Rocinha. Based on over two years of research and residence in the community, it offers an ethnographic account of how entangled forms of violence become essential forces shaping everyday social relations in the favela. The first part of the book shows how armed actors--drug traffickers and police--use spectacle to perform power. Yet despite the prevalence of physical violence, the favela has itself become a valuable global brand, consumed in disembodied fashion through media and in embodied fashion through tourism. Exploring media and favela tourism, the second part of the book demonstrates how the social relationships that arise from ongoing favela violence have a direct relationship to the market economy"--Provided by publisher.

Book excerpt: On the occasion of the celebrations of the bicentennial anniversary of Chile, and the centennial anniversary of the National Museum of Fine Arts, constructed in 1910 as part of the festivities of the Independence centennial, the MNBA planned a series of exhibitions under the title of Centenario. This beautifully edited recompilation volume comprises the history of the museum MNBA with a descriptive and illustrated catalogue of the 250 most important pieces of its patrimonial collection exhibited in the 7 modules that comprised the program Centenario. Milan Ivelic, director of the MNBA explains: "The objective of this publication is to articulate and organize the symbolic imaginaries that are part of the holdings of the Collection of Chilean Art of the MNBA. What this publication is proposing is the organization in a transversal way of the art pieces selected, without following a linear chronology, thus constructing, in a certain way, a new museographic script. The art pieces have been divided into 7 modules based on a broad criteria that respond to their approximation in languages, topic similarities and shared strategic processes for their elaboration, conceptualizing theory and analysis of the artistic practices, without omitting their own historical context"--P.20. The contents of the catalogue follow the 7 main topic modules of the exhibitions. Major referential work illustrated with full-page color plates.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Under dictatorship in Argentina, sex and sexuality were regulated to the point where sex education, explicit images, and even suggestive material were prohibited. With the return to democracy in 1983, Argentines experienced new freedoms, including sexual freedoms. The explosion of the availability and ubiquity of sexual material became known as the destape, and it uncovered sexuality in provocative ways. This was a mass-media phenomenon, but it went beyond this. It was, in effect, a deeper process of change in sexual ideologies and practices. By exploring the boom of sex therapy and sexology; the fight for the implementation of sex education in schools; the expansion of family planning services and of organizations dedicated to sexual health care; and the centrality of discussions on sexuality in feminist and gay organizations, Milanesio shows that the destape was a profound transformation of the way Argentines talked, understood, and experienced sexuality, a change in manners, morals, and personal freedoms.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The lay association called Entrega was originally conceived as a network of prayer groups to promote the Marian-Franciscan spirituality. The name itself is a Spanish word that means a sacrifice or giving of self and is used especially in the context of one's total response to God's Love. The word can also refer to more mundane matters, like the delivery of pizza. The title has an obvious reference to the Portiuncula, the little church where St. Francis founded his three orders. Each topic will hopefully serve as a little portion of nourishment for the soul. They have been used for group discussions but can form a 40-day private retreat as St. Francis was known for keeping several "lents" each year. May the Holy Immaculate Conception bring us all into a deeper union with her Divine Son. God bless you!
