Book excerpt: The setting: Rome, Italy. The era: the 1950s to the 1970s. The subject: everyone who was anyone in the international jet-set. The theme: hedonism, glamour and paparazzi. It was a time when to be snapped in fashionable Italy, to be a pin-up and to have a mutually beneficial relationship with the paparazzi were the main objectives for a certain crowd. If today the term "paparazzi" carries associations of scandal-mongering, voyeurism and right-to-privacy issues, "A Flash of Art" harkens back to the golden age of a once glamorous trade, when things were more black and white, as it were. Photographs by 22 Italian paparazzi, including Tazio Secchiaroli, Lino Nanni, Elio Sorci, Mario Fabbri and Marcello Geppetti, recall a Felliniesque era. There are a few harbingers of the time to come: pictures of celebrities caught in compromising and/or embarrassing situations. One set of images depicts a riled Anita Ekberg threatening another photographer with a bow and arrow as he tries to catch her arriving home after a night out; another shows Jane Mansfield lying in the street having been accosted by "ballerina" Alma del Rio. But the posed portraits of Hollywood icons Brigitte Bardot and Omar Sharif, the endless shots of gorgeous ladies in sparkly gowns, vamping for the camera, and the dapper men in dark suits and darker glasses are the real showstoppers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Value, Capital and Growth was written as a mark of honor to Sir John Hicks on the occasion of his retirement as Drummond Professor of Political Economy at the University of Oxford. As the title implies, most of the essays are directed to the development of the three great topics of modern economic theory to which he contributed--Value, Capital, and Growth. More specifically, there are important papers on general equilibrium, aggregation, and index numbers-- all topics of deep interest in international economics. The volume is particularly noteworthy for a number of papers exploring hitherto unrealized implications of general equilibrium models. There are also several papers dealing with mathematical economics as they relate to trade and development, which will be of great interest to students of those fields. Few theorists possessed Hicks catholicity in economics and his interest in and appetite for all branches of applied economics, and especially comparative economic history. His interests ranged from Italian Renaissance banking to academic publishing and the export and import of scholarly works,The international eminence of the contributors and the quality of their work ensure that this volume is a fitting tribute to a great economist and that it will be studied carefully for many years. No effort was spared to present the work in a style and format worthy of the subject and of the occasion. The volume includes masterful contributions by Kenneth Arrow, Jagdish Bhagwati, Roy Harrod, Paul A. Samuelson, Robert M. Solow, and Alan A. Walters among others, and contains a full biographical and bibliographical data base on Hicks.J.N. Wolfe was professor of economics at the University of Edinburgh until his retirement.

Book excerpt: A no-holds-barred biography of the great poet and sexual rebel, who could “give the dead a voice, make them sing” (Hilton Als, The New Yorker). Thom Gunn was not a confessional poet, and he withheld much, but inseparable from his rigorous, formal poetry was a ravenous, acute experience of life and death. Raised in Kent, England, and educated at Cambridge, Gunn found a home in San Francisco, where he documented the city’s queerness, the hippie mentality (and drug use) of the sixties, and the tragedy and catastrophic impact of the AIDS crisis in the eighties and beyond. As Jeremy Lybarger wrote in The New Republic, the author of Moly and The Man with Night Sweats was “an agile poet who renovated tradition to accommodate the rude litter of modernity.” Thom Gunn: A Cool Queer Life chronicles, for the first time, the largely undocumented life of this revolutionary poet. Michael Nott, a coeditor of The Letters of Thom Gunn, draws on letters, diaries, notebooks, interviews, and Gunn’s poetry to create a portrait as vital as the man himself. Nott writes with insight and intimacy about the great sweep of Gunn’s life: his traditional childhood in England; his mother’s suicide; the mind-opening education he received at Cambridge, reading Shakespeare and John Donne; his decades in San Francisco and with his life partner, Mike Kitay; and his visceral experience of sex, drugs, and loss. Thom Gunn: A Cool Queer Life is a long-awaited, landmark study of one of England and America’s most innovative poets.
