Book excerpt: Behind the Front Panel by David Rutland, an electronics engineer with over 25 years of experience in the design of vacuum tube circuits, explores the whys and wherefores of the components and circuits of the first broadcast radios. By using simplified descriptions and illustrations, supplemented by 25 photographs of actual radio component parts, he provides a readable explanation of what goes on inside the old battery radios. His story begins with the invention of the radio tube at the turn of the last century and concentrates on the engineering design and development through the 1920's. Design examples are taken from over 45 actual radios manufactured in the decade that saw broadcast radio start as a national pastime and end as a national necessity. This book is a classic in radio history. This edition is carefully re-mastered from the original and published by the California Historical Radio Society.

Book Synopsis Build Your Own BASIC by : Richard Whipple
Download or read book Build Your Own BASIC written by Richard Whipple and published by . This book was released on 2020-01-11 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In my first book in this series, "Build Your Own Computer-From Scratch", I started with a few basic concepts and guided the nontechnical reader through the design of a working computer. The emphasis was on hardware design with less attention paid to software. In this book, software is the focus. As before, I make no assumptions regarding your technical knowledge of computers. I start with a few basic concepts and build a version of the BASIC programming language. To test Tiny BASIC, we use the BYOC-24 CPU, a modified version of the computer design introduced in my first book. We first test Tiny BASIC on a simulated BYOC-24 CPU using the freeware application Logisim. Later, we make Tiny BASIC fully functional using an Intel Cyclone V field programmable gate array. Given this brief introduction to computer language design, I believe you will be encouraged to explore other areas of computing. At the very least, I hope you will appreciate more fully what happens when you type "RUN", "COMPILE", or press the green "GO" button in whatever computer language you use.

Book excerpt: A page-turning novel that is also an exploration of the great philosophical concepts of Western thought, Jostein Gaarder's Sophie's World has fired the imagination of readers all over the world, with more than twenty million copies in print. One day fourteen-year-old Sophie Amundsen comes home from school to find in her mailbox two notes, with one question on each: "Who are you?" and "Where does the world come from?" From that irresistible beginning, Sophie becomes obsessed with questions that take her far beyond what she knows of her Norwegian village. Through those letters, she enrolls in a kind of correspondence course, covering Socrates to Sartre, with a mysterious philosopher, while receiving letters addressed to another girl. Who is Hilde? And why does her mail keep turning up? To unravel this riddle, Sophie must use the philosophy she is learning—but the truth turns out to be far more complicated than she could have imagined.
