Book excerpt: FEAR & REALITY. . . A Vietnam War Diary The first person account of a U.S. Army Combat Military Policeman's experiences in the Central Highlands of South Vietnam from 1966 until 1967. The account of a struggle to implement the combined U. S. Military/ South Vietnamese Pacification Program while enforcing the Military Code of Conduct. Serving with units of the 101st Airborne and the 1st Cavalry Division of the US Army, the author found himself, at times, deep in the enemy territory. It is a story about the daily exertion required to survive the hostile jungle environment, punctuated by short bursts of intense fear, exhilaration, and death. The author experiences first hand the up-close and personal combat of guerrilla war. It is also a story of a real test of faith and the search for understanding. The author displays vivid raw emotions as they occurred and which will never be forgotten. A walk in reality to be enjoyed by everyone who wants to know what kind of war it was, and a chance to relate for my fellow veterans. From the Author I dedicate this recounting to all my brothers who served in Vietnam and did a job that seemed as thankless as any in our history as a Nation. It is offered as a rebuttal to all the popular novels depicting the American solider as a dishonorable lot. The truth is almost 3,000,000 men and women served in the Vietnam War and the vast overwhelming majority served their country honorably. Latrell Bellard

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Just as famines and plagues can provide opportunities for medical research, the unhappy course of United States relations with Vietnam is a prime source of evidence for students of American political institutions. How Presidents Test Reality draws on the record of American decision making about Vietnam to explore the capacity of top government executives and their advisers to engage in effective reality testing. Authors Burke and Greenstein compare the Vietnam decisions of two presidents whose leadership styles and advisory systems diverged as sharply as any in the modern presidency. Faced with a common challenge—an incipient Communist take-over of Vietnam—presidents Eisenhower and Johnson engaged in intense debates with their aides and associates, some of whom favored intervention and some of whom opposed it. In the Dien Bien Phu Crisis of 1954, Eisenhower decided not to enter the conflict; in 1965, when it became evident that the regime in South Vietnam could not hold out much longer, Johnson intervened. How Presidents Test Reality uses declassified records and interviews with participants to assess the adequacy of each president’s use of advice and information. This important book advances our historical understanding of the American involvement in Vietnam and illuminates the preconditions of effective presidential leadership in the modern world. "An exceptionally thoughtful exercise in what ‘contemporary history’ ought to be. Illuminates the past in a way that suggests how we might deal with the present and the future." —John Lewis Gaddis "Burke and Greenstein have written what amounts to an owner's manual for operating the National Security Council....This is a book Reagan's people could have used and George Bush ought to read." —Bob Schieffer, The Washington Monthly

For more information on the film companion to the book, visit http://www.virtualjfk.com/ It Matters Who Is President—Then and Now At the heart of this provocative book lies the fundamental question: Does it matter who is president on issues of war and peace? The Vietnam War was one of the most catastrophic and bloody in living memory, and its lessons take on resonance in light of America's current devastating involvement in Iraq. Tackling head-on the most controversial and debated "what if" in U.S. foreign policy, this unique work explores what President John F. Kennedy would have done in Vietnam if he had not been assassinated in 1963. Drawing on a wealth of recently declassified documents, frank oral testimony of White House officials from both the Kennedy and Johnson administrations, and the analysis of top historians, this book presents compelling evidence that JFK was ready to end U.S. involvement well before the conflict escalated. With vivid immediacy, readers will feel they are in the president's war room as the debates raged that forever changed the course of American history—and continue to affect us profoundly today as the shadows of Vietnam stretch into Iraq.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the withdrawal of French forces from South Vietnam in 1955, the U.S. took an ever-widening role in defending the country against invasion by North Vietnam. By 1965, the U.S. had "Americanized" the war, relegating the Army of the Republic of Vietnam (ARVN) to a supporting role. While the U.S. won many tactical victories, it had difficulty controlling the territory it fought for. As the war grew increasingly unpopular with the American public, the North Vietnamese launched two large-scale invasions in 1968 and 1972--both tactical defeats but strategic victories for the North that precipitated the U.S. policy of "Vietnamization," the drawdown of American forces that left the ARVN to fight alone. This book examines the maturation of the ARVN, and the major battles it fought from 1963 to its demise in 1975. Despite its flaws, the ARVN was a well-organized and disciplined force with an independent spirit and contributed enormously to the war effort. Had the U.S. "Vietnamized" the war earlier, it might have been won in 1967-1968.

But are the virtual realities virtual realities or alternate realities? Is his real reality just one of many alternate realities, all equally real? Not even Dr. Vihaan Patel, inventor of the Patel VR Theater, can answer these questions. As Dr. Turner says, The beauty is, we will never know. The realities Dr. Turner lives in are inhabited by a group of women whose various histories are interwoven. These are Nancy Swann, the most beautiful woman Sam has ever seen; Becky Alsace and Sarah Burke, fellow students with Sam at Columbia University, linked with him for life; Caroline Williams, director at the New York Museum of Modern Art; a Catholic nun in Tanzania; the Vietnamese trio, Pham Thi Hua, Mai Thi Lan, and Nguyen Thi Tran, all of whom are involved with Sam in the final days of the Vietnam War and alternately in Manhattan; and Pam Windham, botanist and widow of a panda expert. You will wonder, along with Sam, what is and what isnt real. You, along with Sam, will have to come to your own conclusions. And you will enjoy, along with Sam, the entire adventure. Start reading and meet Nancy Swann.
