This book was released on 2019-09-08 with total page 511 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book Synopsis From Latin to Romance by : Adam Ledgeway
Download or read book From Latin to Romance written by Adam Ledgeway and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2012-05-18 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the grammatical changes that took place in the transition from Latin to the Romance languages. The emerging languages underwent changes in three fundamental areas involving the noun phrase, verb phrase, and the sentence. The impact of the changes can be seen in the reduction of the Latin case system; the appearance of auxiliary verb structures to mark such categories tense, mood, and voice; and a shift towards greater rigidification of word order. The author considers how far these changes are interrelated and compares their various manifestations and pace of change across the different standard and non-standard varieties of Romance. He describes the historical background to the emergence of the Romance varieties and their Latin ancestry, considering in detail the richly documented diachronic variation exhibited by the Romance family. Adam Ledgeway reviews the accounts and explanations that have been proposed within competing theoretical frameworks, and considers how far traditional ideas should be reinterpreted in light of recent theoretical developments. His wide-ranging account shows that the transition from Latin to Romance is not only of great intrinsic interest, but both provides a means of challenging linguistic orthodoxies and presents opportunities to shape new persepctives on language change, structure, and variation.

Book Synopsis Towards a History of the Basque Language by : José Ignacio Hualde
Download or read book Towards a History of the Basque Language written by José Ignacio Hualde and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 1996-01-01 with total page 374 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Questions related to the origin and history of the Basque language spark considerable interest, since it is the only surviving pre-Indo-European language in western Europe. However, until now, there was no readily available source in English providing answers to these questions or giving an overview of past and current research in this area. This book is intended to partly fill this void. The book contains both state-of-the-art papers which summarize our knowledge about particular areas of Basque historical linguistics, and articles presenting new hypotheses and points of view based on hard evidence and careful analysis. All contributors to this volume have demonstrated expertise in the topic within Basque historical linguistics that their chapter addresses. Two classical articles by the late Luis Michelena are included in English translation. In addition, the book includes studies on diachronic phonology, morphology and syntax. The relation of Basque to other languages is also investigated in a couple of chapters.
Book Synopsis The Evolution of Spanish by : Thomas A. Lathrop
Download or read book The Evolution of Spanish written by Thomas A. Lathrop and published by Juan de la Cuesta-Hispanic Monographs. This book was released on 2003 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For a long time American students have needed an introductory Spanish historical grammar specifically written for them; the standard book on the subject, Menendez Pida's Manual de gramatica historica, was written around the turn of this century in Spain, when students were expected to know Latin. Most students of today have no background in Latin since the modern curriculum has placed emphasis elsewhere. In this standard manual, Lathrop offers a detailed preliminary chapter dealing with the basic facts of Classical Latin important to the development of Spanish, as well as a detailed picture of Vulgar Latin--the language of the masses. It was this spoken language which was the origin of Spanish. In the second chapter he explains the evolution of vowels and consonants from Vulgar Latin to Spanish, with numerous examples illustrating each point. In the third chapter, he shows how the various grammatical forms, most particularly nouns, adjectives and verbs, evolved from Vulgar Latin to Spanish, again with many examples of reach section. At the end of the volume there is a useful index of words, a detailed, updated bibliography, a translation of Latin words into English, and a general index.

Book Synopsis Judaísmo, Sefarad, Israel by : Santiago Catalá Rubio
Download or read book Judaísmo, Sefarad, Israel written by Santiago Catalá Rubio and published by Univ de Castilla La Mancha. This book was released on 2002 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.
Book Synopsis Variation and Change in Spanish by : Ralph Penny
Download or read book Variation and Change in Spanish written by Ralph Penny and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2004-05-20 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book applies recent theoretical insights to trace the development of Castilian and Latin American Spanish from the Middle Ages onwards, through processes of repeated dialect mixing both within the Iberian Peninsula and in the New World. The author contends that it was this frequent mixing which caused Castilian to evolve more rapidly than other varieties of Hispano-Romance, and which rendered Spanish particularly subject to levelling of its linguistic irregularities and to simplification of its structures. These two processes continued as the language extended into and across the Americas. These processes are viewed in the context of the Hispano-Romance dialect continuum, which includes Galician, Portuguese and Catalan, as well as New World varieties. The book emphasises the subtlety and seamlessness of language variation, both geographical and social, and the impossibility of defining strict boundaries between varieties. Its conclusions will be relevant both to Hispanists and to historical sociolinguists more generally.
