Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the past few years, there has been a growing awareness of the vibratio nal properties of solid surfaces and adsorbates due to a steady growth in the number of experimental techniques which have evolved with sufficient resolution and surface sensitivity. An understanding of the surface vibratio nal modes is of fundamental importance in many areas of the physics and chemistry of surfaces, most notably in the field of heterogeneous catalysis on metals and alloys. The present volume derives from a one day meeting of invited lectures, held under the auspices of the Thin Films and Surfaces Section of the Insti tute of Physics in the Cavendish Laboratory, University of Cambridge, 13 December 1979. The object was to bring together specialists from various diverse fields who would examine the wide variety of methods currently avail able for studying surface adsorbate vibrations. Since these methods cover several scientific disciplines, it was subsequently felt that it would be useful to provide a permanent record of the talks as a source lor future reference by workers in what is rapidly becoming an expanding field of',inter est in an increasing number of laboratories. The contributions, however, are not in any way meant to constitute exhaustive reviews.

This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 478 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The observation of the vibrational spectra of adsorbed species provides one of the most incisive methods for und erst an ding chemical and physical phenomena on surfaces. At the present time, many approaches may be applied to studies of molecular vibrations on surfaces. Some of these are used on high-area solids of technological importance (e.g., heterogeneous catalysts) while others are applied to single-crystal substrates to gain better understanding under conditions of controlled surface structure. This book has attempted to bring together in one place a discussion of the major methods used to measure vibrational spectra of surface species. The emphasis is on basic concepts and experimental methods rather than a current survey of the extensive literature in this field. Two introductory chapters describe the basic theoretical aspects of vibrational spectroscopy on surfaces, dealing with normal modes and excitation mechanisms in vibrational spectroscopy. The remaining seven chapters deal with various methods employed to observe surface vibra tions. These are arranged in an order that first treats the use of various methods on surfaces that are not of the single-crystal type. It is in this area that the field first got started in the late 1940s with pioneering work by Terenin and others in the Soviet Union, and by Eisehens and others in the United States in the 1950s. The last four chapters deal with relatively recent methods that permit vibrational studies to be made on single crystal substrates.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: High pressure high temperature CO adsorption and coadsorption with ethylene and propylene on Pt(111) was monitored in situ with infrared-visible sum frequency generation (SFG). At high pressures and high temperatures, CO dissociates on a Pt(111) surface to form carbon. At 400 torr CO pressure and 673K, CO modifies the Pt(111) surface through a carbonyl intermediate, and dissociates to leave carbon on the surface. SFG was used to follow the CO peak evolution from monolayer adsorption in ultra high vacuum (UHV) to 400 torr CO pressure. At this high pressure, a temperature dependence study from room temperature to 823K was carried out. Auger electron spectroscopy was used to identify carbon on the surface CO coadsorption with ethylene and CO coadsorption with propylene studies were carried out with 2-IR 1-visible SFG. With this setup, two spectral ranges covering the C-H stretch range and the CO stretch range can be monitored simultaneously. The coadsorption study with ethylene reveals that after 5L ethylene exposure on a Pt(111) surface to form ethylidyne, CO at high pressures cannot completely displace the ethylidyne from the surface. Instead, CO first adsorbs on defect sites at low pressures and then competes with ethylidyne for terrace sites at high pressures. Propylene coadsorption with CO at similar conditions shows that propylidyne undergoes conformation changes with increased CO pressure and at 1 torr, is absent from the Pt(111) surface. Experiments on CO poisoning of ethylene hydrogenation was carried by 2-IR 1-visible SFG. At 1 torr CO,10 torr ethylene and 100 torr hydrogen, CO was found to block active sites necessary for ethylene hydrogenation, Above 425K, CO desorbs from the surface to allow ethylene hydrogenation to occur. The gas phase species were monitored by gas chromatography.
Book Synopsis Vibrational Spectroscopy of Competitive Adsorption at a Liquid/Solid Interface Using IR-Visible Sum-Frequency Generation by : J. Miragliotta
Download or read book Vibrational Spectroscopy of Competitive Adsorption at a Liquid/Solid Interface Using IR-Visible Sum-Frequency Generation written by J. Miragliotta and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 4 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Optical IR-Visible sum-frequency generation (SFG), a surface vibrational spectroscopy, has been used to study competitive adsorption at a hydroxylated ZrO2 surface in contact with a number of binary solutions. This technique is similar to surface second harmonic generation (SHG) in that it is forbidden (in the dipole approximation) in spatial regions possessing inversion symmetry. Therefore, systems consisting of an interface bound by centrosymmetric media give rise to a nonlinear response which is dominated by that of the interfacial region. In addition to being surface specific, the SFG signal from the liquid/solid interface can be resonantly enhanced when the incident IR laser source used in the generation process is tuned through a vibrational mode in the adsorbed species, provided the mode is both Raman and IR active. This vibrational information allows identification of the adsorbed molecule as well as measurements of surface coverage, molecular orientation, and adsorbate interactions for a number of the two-component liquid systems.
