Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Peshit ta version of the Syriac translation of the Old Testament was made during the first centuries of the Christian era and has been used ever since in the non-Western churches of Semitic signature. Much like the Greek translations of the Old Testament, this document is an important source for our knowledge of the text of the Old Testament. In contrast to the manuscript of most Hebrew traditions, which date from the beginning of the Middle Ages, the extant manuscripts date from the fifth century. The present edition, prepared at the Peshit ta Institute in Leiden on behalf of the International Organisation for the Study of the Old Testament, is the first critical one of this text. The edition of each individual book is preceded by a separate introduction.

Book Synopsis Festive Meals in Ancient Israel by : Peter Altmann
Download or read book Festive Meals in Ancient Israel written by Peter Altmann and published by Walter de Gruyter. This book was released on 2011 with total page 313 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The festive meal texts of Deuteronomy 12-26 depict Israel as a unified people participating in cultic banquets- a powerful and earthy image for both preexilic Judahite and later audiences. Comparison of Deuteronomy 12:13-27, 14:22-29, 16:1-17, and 26:1-15 with pentateuchal texts like Exodus 20-23 is broadened to highlight the rhetorical potential of the Deuteronomic meal texts in relation to the religious and political circumstances in Israel during the Neo-Assyrian and later periods. The texts employ the concrete and rich image of festive banquets, which the monograph investigates in relation to comparative ancient Near Eastern texts and iconography, the zooarchaeological remains of the ancient Levant, and the findings of cultural anthropology with regard to meals.

Download or read book Like Grapes of Gold Set in Silver written by Knut Martin Heim and published by Walter de Gruyter. This book was released on 2012-10-25 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Exegetical study of Proverbs 10:1‐22:16. Proverbs are neither statements of this-worldly cause and effect nor universally applicable doctrines of divine order. Rather, a proverb’s meaning and ‚truth‘ are conditioned by the context. The author delimits sections which the editor(s) of the collection consciously grouped together in their present sequence. He then examines how these literary arrangements both influence the meaning of the individual proverbs and determine their function in context. Indexes of names, passages and subjects are included.

Book Synopsis Rebuilding Identity by : Jacob L. Wright
Download or read book Rebuilding Identity written by Jacob L. Wright and published by Walter de Gruyter. This book was released on 2012-10-24 with total page 388 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph presents a fresh and detailed treatment of the problems posed by the Nehemiah-Memoir. Starting from the pre-critical interpretations of Ezra-Neh, the study demonstrates that the use of the first-person does not suffice as a criterion for distinguishing between the verba Neemiae and the additions of later authors. The earliest edition of the Memoir isconfined to a building report, which was expanded as early generations of readers developed the implications of Nehemiah's accomplishments for the consolidation and centralization of Judah. The expansions occasioned in turn the composition of the history of the "Restoration" in Ezra-Neh.
Book Synopsis Old Testament Exegesis, Fifth Edition by : Douglas Stuart
Download or read book Old Testament Exegesis, Fifth Edition written by Douglas Stuart and published by Presbyterian Publishing Corp. This book was released on 2022-03-15 with total page 185 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For years, Douglas Stuart's Old Testament Exegesis has been one of the most popular ways to learn how to perform exegesis—the science and art of interpreting biblical texts properly for understanding as well as proclamation. This new edition includes a major revision and expansion of online and other resources for doing biblical research and updates past editions by including a helpful configuration of the format for the exegesis process. Stuart provides guidance for full exegesis as well as for a quicker approach specifically tailored to the task of preaching. A glossary of terms explains the sometimes-bewildering language of biblical scholarship, and a list of frequent errors guides the student in avoiding common mistakes. No exegetical guide for the Old Testament has been more widely used in training ministers and students to be faithful, careful interpreters of Scripture.
Book Synopsis Studies in the Syntax of the Peshitta of 1 Kings by : Peter Williams
Download or read book Studies in the Syntax of the Peshitta of 1 Kings written by Peter Williams and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2021-11-15 with total page 219 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Peshitta is probably the earliest translation of the whole Old Testament into a Semitic idiom. It displays an impressive balance between fidelity to the structure and sense of the Hebrew original and sensitivity to the preferences of the receptor language. This book considers ten key topics in Syriac syntax and exhaustively considers their patterns as they occur in the Peshitta of 1 Kings. Old rules of grammar are refined, new rules formulated, and wider issues of translation method considered. This study is relevant to Syriac specialists, textual critics and biblical scholars alike. It argues that many features in the Peshitta that have previously been attributed to a translator's whim, or to a Vorlage varying from the Masoretic Text, are in fact determined by factors internal to Syriac.
Download or read book YHWH Elohim written by Bruce J. Harvey and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2011-02-03 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study provides a survey of all occurrences of YHWH that are followed by an Elohim appositive in the Leningrad Codex and their corresponding Septuagintal renderings. Its primary purpose is to demonstrate how each occurrence of YHWH Elohim, where Elohim is undetermined, could have resulted from changes made to an earlier text. It begins with a discussion of methodological issues. This is followed by a description of the Hebrew context of the 887 occurrences of YHWH Elohim in the Leningrad Codex. In addition to breakdowns according to book, syntactic function and speaker, a summary of corresponding variants in synoptic parallels, the Samaritan Pentateuch, Dead Sea Scrolls and mediaeval manuscripts is also provided. This is followed by a summary of corresponding Septuagintal renderings. These context descriptions provide the foundation for an analysis of the 38 occurrences of YHWH Elohim where Elohim is undetermined. Since four of these occurrences are followed by Sabaoth, a survey of all compound designations containing Sabaoth as well as an analysis of the 18 occurrences of YHWH Elohe Sabaoth are also provided.
