Book excerpt: This book offers an updated and comprehensive review of the role of vertebroplasty, kyphoplasty and augmentation techniques in all fields of orthopedic surgery, neurosurgery, and interventional radiology. Addressing the latest advances in terms of the materials used and combined approaches with other mini-invasive techniques, it reveals how vertebroplasty, kyphoplasty and various augmentation techniques could become instrumental to helping patients with specific vertebral compression fractures or other diseases of the vertebral column. The book includes a detailed history of the techniques’ development, descriptions of the materials used in the last twenty years, and extensive information on the biomechanical basis, anatomy and current indications for vertebroplasty, kyphoplasty and augmentation. In addition, it highlights representative cases to enhance readers’ understanding of each topic, and particular attention is paid to the innovative evolution of the techniques and to their combination with other mini-invasive approaches, stents and brachytherapy. Given its scope, the book offers a valuable guide for all neurosurgeons, orthopedic surgeons, and interventional radiologists whose work involves spine pathologies and their treatment.

This book was released on 2006-11-22 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the ?rst edition of this book was published in 2002, there have been many advances in our knowledge of percutaneous vertoplasty (PV), particularly about how to perform the procedure more safely and how to approach more complex case situations. Additionally, mate- als that were initially used “off label” or that simply were not FDA approved have completed their governmental review and have received FDA approval. This has increased the legitimacy of the p- cedure from the legal and reimbursement perspective. Controversy over height restoration and device selection has become a progressively bigger issue over time. Kyphoplasty (balloon assisted vertebroplasty) has received tremendous emphasis. This book c- pares and contrasts data and claims that differentiate kyphoplasty from percutaneous vertebroplasty. We also look at other methods that pot- tially can be used for height restoration. New procedures that deal with bone augmentation in other anatomic regions have evolved (i.e., sacroplasty) and are discussed. As this re- lution in image-guided percutaneous bone augmentation has dev- oped, multiple medical specialties have embraced these procedures in their training programs for both residents and practicing physicians.

Book excerpt: The objectives of this review were to evaluate the effectiveness and safety of percutaneous image-guided vertebral augmentation techniques, vertebroplasty and kyphoplasty, for palliation of cancer-related vertebral compression fractures. [...] Owing to the heterogeneity of the clinical reports, we performed a narrative synthesis based on an analytical framework constructed for the type of cancer- related vertebral fractures and the diversity of the vertebral augmentation interventions. [...] Objectives of Analysis The objectives of this analysis were to evaluate the effectiveness and safety of two percutaneous image-guided vertebral augmentation interventions-vertebroplasty or kyphoplasty-for cancer-related vertebral compression fractures and to evaluate their comparative effectiveness with conservative management. [...] Clinical Need and Target Population In spinal metastatic disease, vertebral compression fractures commonly occur in the lumbar and thoracic regions of the spine and have been classically defined as a loss of vertebral body height of at least 20%.17 Fractures can also occur in high-risk cervical areas and sacral regions of the spine, and patients can have complex multilevel fracture patterns involv [...] Both of these procedures aim to primarily manage pain and involve the injection of bone cement (polymethylmethacrylate [PMMA]) into the vertebral body.28 Kyphoplasty also aims to restore the height of the collapsed vertebrae and to correct spinal kyphosis, if present.29 Kyphoplasty involves the use of an inflatable balloon catheter to create a cavity in which bone cement can be injected, and to at.

Book excerpt: "Cancers that metastasize to the spine and primary cancers such as multiple myeloma can result in vertebral compression fractures or instability. Conservative strategies, including bed rest, bracing, and analgesic use, can be ineffective, resulting in continued pain and progressive functional disability limiting mobility and self-care. Surgery is not usually an option for cancer patients in advanced disease states because of their poor medical health or functional status and limited life expectancy. The objectives of this review were to evaluate the effectiveness and safety of percutaneous image-guided vertebral augmentation techniques, vertebroplasty and kyphoplasty, for palliation of cancer-related vertebral compression fractures."--Abstract.

Book excerpt: This easy-to-consult guide describes new minimally invasive procedures for the treatment of vertebral lesions that are accompanied by fewer complications and side-effects, reduce the risks of anesthesia, and lower costs. Clear accounts are provided of CT and X-ray guided techniques for vertebral augmentation in different regions of the spine and for the treatment of vertebral tumors by means of cryoablation, radiofrequency ablation, and embolization. Helpful information is also provided on imaging, biomechanics, biopsy, and biomaterials. Like other books in the Springer series New Procedures in Spinal Interventional Neuroradiology, this practice-oriented volume will fill a significant gap in the literature and meet the need expressed by a large number of specialists (interventional neuroradiologists and radiologists, neurosurgeons, and orthopedists) for a topical and handy guide that specifically illustrates the presently available materials and methods.

These procedures require minimal incisions and can be performed without general anesthesia, which adds to their appeal. Here is the first book to cover everything that is currently known about vertebroplasty and kyphoplasty, including patient selection, operative techniques, complication avoidance, management, outcomes, and more! You will find extensive discussions of the role of vertebroplasty and kyphoplasty in acute fractures, non-osteoporotic pathological compression fractures, and burst fractures. A multidisciplinary panel of spine surgeons, orthopedic surgeons, neurosurgeons, and interventional radiologists provide their unique perspectives, along with comparisons of techniques and potential complications to help you select the right procedure for a particular patient. Filling a significant gap in literature, this exceptional work provides a ''snapshot'' of these modern surgical techniques, with practical guidelines on using them to provide optimal patient care.
