SIMPLE VERSES is the first complete English translation of the classic collection VERSOS SENCILLOS, written by the Cuban poet Jose Marti (1853-1895) in the United States during his years of exile and revolutionary struggle. This great political and literary figure of the nineteenth century has been one of the most influential men in all the Americas. A spiritual autobiography, SIMPLE VERSES captures in each poem an experience, a feeling or a moment that formed the poet and the man. The poet, the soldier, the troubadour, the legislator, the searcher for truth, the enraptured and the disenchanted lover, the defender of poetry and its transformer, the genius and the man - all alternate in a modulated and musical flow like life itself, which it embodies. The translations of Manuel Tellechea, a Cuban American living in Union City, New Jersey, have been published by the University of Pittsburgh, Freedom House, Transaction Publishers, and others.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Bible Verses On Love: 99 Love Bible Verses" Be reminded that we are loved by God and precious to Him. We are called to give and receive love The Merriam-Webster dictionary defines love as "Unselfish loyal and benevolent concern for the good of another; the fatherly concern of God for humankind; brotherly concern for others." There are different expressions of love.Agape, Eros, Philia and Storge. Wikipedia defines Agape love as "the love of God for man and of man for God." Agape love is unconditional. Eros love is the love we have for a romantic partner. Philia love is the love we have for our friends. Storge love is the love we have for our family. Love is undoubtedly one of the greatest human needs. We all have a need to be valued, a need to be appreciated, a need to be loved. Love causes us to flourish, without it we will wither. Society is filled with songs and books that echo our need for love. Yet, we find that we often struggle to give and receive love. "Bible Verses On Love: 99 Love Bible Verses" reminds us that we have all been called to love We all have been called to Love. We are called to love on days when it is easy to love, and to love on days when it is difficult to love. These Bible Verses acknowledge that some days, love can be more of a discipline than a feeling. "Bible Verses On Love: 99 Love Bible Verses" reminds us that God''s love is unconditional Unlike man, God''s love for us is unconditional and in abundant supply. The whole Bible is a story of God''s love for humanity. The story of creation to the story of redemption reveals a heart of limitless love for humanity. "Bible Verses On Love: 99 Love Bible Verses" is a collection of verses that remind us of God''s abundant love for us. The verses remind us that we are loved by God and precious to Him. He values and appreciates us. These verses encourage us to love one another even as God loves us. The verses also remind us of some of the greatest love stories in the Bible. "Some Bible Verses From "Bible Verses On Love: 99 Love Bible Verses Bible verses on love like Genesis 29:20 reminds us that love can drive us to great lengths for the one that we love. Jacob served seven years for Rachel. They seemed to him but a few days, for the love he had for her. Bible Verses on love like Isaiah 49:15-16 reminds us that the love God has for us is greater than the love a mother has for her child. Can a woman forget her nursing child, that she should not have compassion on the son of her womb? Yes, these may forget, yet I will not forget you! Behold, I have engraved you on the palms of my hands. Your walls are continually before me. Bible Verses on love like John 3:16 remind us that God loves us greatly and He paid the ultimate price for us. For God so loved the world, that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish, but have eternal life. Bible Verses on love like 1 Corinthians 13:4-8 remind us of what Love is. Love is patient and is kind; love doesn''t envy. Love doesn''t brag, is not proud, Love is patient and is kind; love doesn''t envy. Love doesn''t brag, is not proud, doesn''t behave itself inappropriately, doesn''t seek its own way, is not provoked, takes no account of evil; doesn''t rejoice in unrighteousness, but rejoices with the truth; bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. Love never fails. But where there are prophecies, they will be done away with. Where there are various languages, they will cease. Where there is knowledge, it will be done away with. "Bible Verses On Love: 99 Love Bible Verses" is a numbered compilation starting from the Old Testament to the New Testament. May you experience the fullness of the love of God. This book was released on 2021-06-24 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Portugal was not always the best place for poets in the sixteenth century. Against the backdrop of an expanding empire, the country's annexation by Spain in 1580, and ongoing religious controversy, poets struggled to articulate their worth to rulers and patrons. This did not prevent them, however, from persisting in their craft. Indeed, many of their works reflected precisely on the question of what poetry could do and what, ultimately, its value was. The answers that poets like Luís de Camões, Francisco de Sá de Miranda, António Ferreira, and Diogo Bernardes offered to these questions, and which are explored in this book, ranged from lofty ideals to the more practical concerns of making ends meet when one depended on the whims of the powerful. This volume articulates a 'pragmatics of poetry' that combines literary analysis and book history with methods from sociology (network analysis, sociology of professions, valuation studies) to explore how poets thought about themselves and negotiated the value of their verse in the court, with patrons, or in the marketplace for books. It reveals how poets compared their work to that of lawyers and doctors and tried to set themselves apart as a special group of professionals. It shows how they threatened their patrons as well as flattered them and tried to turn their poetry from a gift into something like a commodity or service that had to be paid for. While poets set out to write in the most ambitious genres and to better their European rivals, they sometimes refused to spend months composing an epic without the prospect of reward. Their books of verse, when printed, were framed as linguistic propaganda as well as objects of material and aesthetic worth at a time when many said that non-devotional poetry was a sinful waste of time. This is a book about the various ways in which poets, metaphorically and more literally, tried to turn poetry and the paper it was written on into gold.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a history of love and the challenge love offers to the laws and customs of its times and places, as told through poetry from the Song of Songs to John Milton’s Paradise Lost. It is also an account of the critical reception afforded to such literature, and the ways in which criticism has attempted to stifle this challenge. Bryson and Movsesian argue that the poetry they explore celebrates and reinvents the love the troubadour poets of the eleventh and twelfth centuries called fin’amor: love as an end in itself, mutual and freely chosen even in the face of social, religious, or political retribution. Neither eros nor agape, neither exclusively of the body, nor solely of the spirit, this love is a middle path. Alongside this tradition has grown a critical movement that employs a 'hermeneutics of suspicion', in Paul Ricoeur’s phrase, to claim that passionate love poetry is not what it seems, and should be properly understood as worship of God, subordination to Empire, or an entanglement with the structures of language itself – in short, the very things it resists. The book engages with some of the seminal literature of the Western canon, including the Bible, the poetry of Ovid, and works by English authors such as William Shakespeare and John Donne, and with criticism that stretches from the earliest readings of the Song of Songs to contemporary academic literature. Lively and enjoyable in its style, it attempts to restore a sense of pleasure to the reading of poetry, and to puncture critical insistence that literature must be outwitted. It will be of value to professional, graduate, and advanced undergraduate scholars of literature, and to the educated general reader interested in treatments of love in poetry throughout history.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The essays in this collection reflect two of Martí’s key observations during his time in the United States: first, how did he, an exile living in New York, view and read his North American neighbors from a sociocultural, political and literary perspective? Second, how did his perception of the modern nation impact his own concepts of race, capital punishment, poetics, and nation building for Cuba? The overarching endeavor of this project is to view and read Martí with the same critical or modern eye with which he viewed and read Spain, Cuba, Latin America and the United States. This volume, combining many of the most relevant experts in the field of Martí studies, attempts to answer those questions. It hopes to broaden the understanding and extend the influence of one of Americas’ (speaking of the collective Americas) most prolific and important writers, particularly within the very nation where his chronicles, poetry, and journalism were written. In spite of the political differences still separating Cuba and the United States, understanding Martí's relevancy is crucial to bridging the gap between these nations.

Book excerpt: In 1890, the great Cuban revolutionary leader Jose Marti wrote his most famous poetry, Versos Sencillos, in a small town called Haines Falls in the Catskill Mountains of New York. Sincere and intensely personal in tone, these verses form a unique autobiographical expression yet have world-wide appeal. This dual-language edition of Versos Sencillos offers both the Spanish-language original and a graceful English translation of each poem in the collection. The translation follows the original rhyme scheme where feasible but deliberately chooses meaning over form, staying true to mood and method. In addition to notes on the poems, this edition also includes the particulars of translation and provides a background for the composition of the verses, features lacking in earlier translations. An index of first lines, both English and Spanish, is included. Instructors considering this book for use in a course may request an examination copy here.
