Book excerpt: Over the past few decades, carbon nanomaterials, most commonly fullerenes, carbon nanotubes, and graphene, have gained increasing interest in both science and industry, due to their advantageous properties that make them attractive for many applications in nanotechnology. Another class of the carbon nanomaterials family that has slowly been gaining (re)newed interest is diamond molecules, also called diamondoids, which consist of polycyclic carbon cages that can be superimposed on a cubic diamond lattice. Derivatives of diamondoids are used in pharmaceutics, but due to their promising properties—well-defined structures, high thermal and chemical stability, negative electron affinity, and the possibility to tune their bandgap—diamondoids could also serve as molecular building blocks in future nanodevices. This book is the first of its kind to give an exhaustive overview of the structures, properties, and current and possible future applications of diamondoids. It contains a brief historical account of diamondoids, from the discovery of the first diamondoid member, adamantane, to the isolation of higher diamondoids about a decade ago. It summarizes the different approaches to synthesizing diamondoids. In particular, current research on the conventional organic synthesis and new approaches based on microplasmas generated in high-pressure and supercritical fluids are reviewed and the advantages and disadvantages of the different methods discussed. The book will serve as a reference for advanced undergraduate- and graduate-level students in chemistry, physics, materials science, and nanotechnology and researchers in macromolecular science, nanotechnology, chemistry, biology, and medicine, especially those with an interest in nanoparticles.

Written by the leading experts worldwide it introduces the science of UNCD for both the R&D community and applications developers using UNCD in a diverse range of applications from macro to nanodevices, such as energy-saving ultra-low friction and wear coatings for mechanical pump seals and tools, high-performance MEMS/NEMS-based systems (e.g. in telecommunications), the next generation of high-definition flat panel displays, in-vivo biomedical implants, and biosensors. This work brings together the basic science of nanoscale diamond structures, with detailed information on ultra-nanodiamond synthesis, properties, and applications. The book offers discussion on UNCD in its two forms, as a powder and as a chemical vapor deposited film. Also discussed are the superior mechanical, tribological, transport, electrochemical, and electron emission properties of UNCD for a wide range of applications including MEMS/ NEMS, surface acoustic wave (SAW) devices, electrochemical sensors, coatings for field emission arrays, photonic and RF switching, biosensors, and neural prostheses, etc. Ultrananocrystalline Diamond summarises the most recent developments in the nanodiamond field, and presents them in a way that will be useful to the R&D community in both academic and corporate sectors. Coverage of both nanodiamond particles and films make this a valuable resource for both the nanotechnology community and the field of thin films / vacuum deposition. Written by the world's leading experts in nanodiamond, this second edition builds on its predecessor's reputation as the most up-to-date resource in the field.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The thesis deals with development of synthetic methods for preparation of novel carbon-metal organohybrid based on diamondoid and palladium. The vapor pressure of various diamondoids was measured from a new measurement protocol at solid-vapor thermodynamic equilibrium state. Their volatile tendency opened a possibility to do deposition from gas phase and at various pressure (ambient, primary vacuum, and high vacuum) of diamondoids on silicon or mica substrates. SEM observations have shown that depending on the type of functional groups on the diamondoid, different crystal shapes can be produced (rods, needles, triangles, truncated octahedral form).OMCVD of palladium on functionalized diamantanes showed that Pd deposition occurs preferentially on the oxide native layer on silicon substrates than on diamondoid crystals bearing hydroxyl or fluorine groups. This urged the synthesis new diamondoids with phosphino groups in order to make strong covalent bonding between the modified diamondoid and palladium.A full set of functionalized diamondoid phosphines were synthesized with unexpected air-stability of some primary diamondoid phosphines were observedIt has been shown that the use of P(III) phosphine as anchoring sites allowed the formation of hybrid material Pd@PH2-Diam-OH. Different characterizations (XPS, SEM, TEM, and EDX) indicated that an insulator material Pd@PH2-Diam-OH formed during the CVD deposition with P-Pd interaction.

Book excerpt: Quantum confinement in low-dimensional semiconductor nanostructures enables materials with tuneable electronic and optical properties. This book discusses three-dimensionally confined structures in diamond, a material with remarkable physical attributes. Data for a series of size and shape-selected, hydrogen-passivated nanodiamonds (diamondoids) are presented. Diamondoids consist of face-fused cages that are perfectly sp -hybridized and thus directly superimposable on the bulk diamond crystal lattice. The present gas phase experiments provide benchmark data as they were obtained under boundary conditions similar to those assumed in typical theoretical investigations. They show that characteristic optical properties for diamond nano-wire, -sheet, and -crystal evolve already in the sub-nm size regime. Most notably, a striking similarity in optical response between a tetrahedral diamondoid and the bulk material is found. Further, diamondoids have been found to luminesce in the UV, making them prospective candidates for optoelectronic applications. Besides their fundamental interest, the current findings disclose considerable technological potential of these new nanocarbon materials."

This includes the integration of the current transport models of diamond. The book emphasize the subjects' substrate selection, mechanical and chemical structuring, doping, and metallization. Also included is simulation as a tool to predict the results of the technological steps. Though a state of the art method is far behind in comparison to the silicon and gallium arsenide growth we assume the same state as exists in these technologies, namely that the diamond substrates are commercially available.
