L'accent est mis, en particulier, sur l'importance du langage, à la fois comme formalisme de représentation, et comme médium de communication, en essayant de montrer comment des dysfonctionnements, dans ces deux rôles, peuvent mettre en péril la démarche modélisatrice. Dans ce cadre, l'auteur s'attache à promouvoir une vision fédératrice d'un système multi modèles, en favorisant la création de passerelles, avec l'image sous-jacente d'une structure informationnelle « polyglotte ».
